Edina hockey association should be embarrassed for letting this happen. They are the ones that can help put this to an end by setting an example. Shut the doors!!! Why should Edina Hockey be embarrassed? A quick internet search shows that in 2010, Edina school district had 1,166 open-enrolled stude...

Wayzata is leading the way and others will be forced to follow. Don't think the squirt talent is good enough to pull it off, but need to give it a shot. Edina needs to do it at bantams this year, but no courage on the board. No offense, but I hope you are wrong. If the large associations follow Way...

I'm surprised Edina and Wayzata would do this. Two equal A teams is probably developmentally superior for skaters ranked 15-30 but it is arguably worse for skaters ranked 1-15. Some of the top skaters will view two A teams as "watered down" and will view the ever-expanding Minnesota Made ...

In case you missed it, the link below takes you to the recent letter from Minnesota Hockey looking for member feedback regarding the checking proposal. Maybe I'm jaded, but the tone of the letter sounds like the Minnesota "Body Contact Committee" has already made up its mind to support the...

Below is an e-mail from MN Hockey President (Rich Rakness' e-mail is incorrect, but his contact information is listed on the MN Hockey website). It is good to see MN Hockey solicit member feedback. The MH Board of Director have established a committee to study, gather feedback from our members and e...

I was there and was confused when they called the penalty, after asking around here's what I found out... Before the start of the second period the refs skated over to the ER bench and gave them a bench minor for illegal substitution. It was brought to their attention from apparently an Edina paren...

Anyone have any thoughts on the new helmets (M11, S19, etc.) as far as concussion help? I know you can't stop them, but it sure seems like they are making a great effort to cut back the number. I know I checked out the new S19 and was amazed at the strength of it and the lightness of it. Don't know...

I could type all night on this subject. I am one of those people who subscribe to the idea that off ice training is just as important than on ice training. Off ice training simply makes you a faster, stronger, and more balanced athlete. I really have never seen a great hockey player who was a terri...

Strength and Conditioning for Youth Hockey Players

I have noticed a proliferation of strength and conditioning programs springing up around youth hockey. Many of the programs are closely affiliated with AAA hockey teams while others appear to be independent. Examples include Breakaway, FHIT, Exceed, Edge Training Ctr, Total Hockey, Velocity, E-train...

I just can't believe how many teams there are these days....it wasn't too long ago when the only teams were basically the Predators, Christian Brothers, Lightning, Icemen, LSS and Blades. Now we have the Bauer Supremes and Vapor, CCM Capitals, Monopoly and Flyers, RBK and Reebok Nationals, Raging B...

NAHC: I found the article from the Journal of the American Medical Association that you mentioned above. It was published in June and basically says that a PeeWee kid that plays in a checking league (Alberta) is 3.26 times more likely to suffer a significant injury than a non-checking PeeWee skater ...

In my opinion, checking needs to be taught as an individual skill, just like shooting, passing and skating. I don't think checking is taught very well because coaches have so much to teach relative to the amount of icetime they have. If nothing else, I really wish coaches would take a couple of dryl...

From what I understand, last winter Edina purchased ice for thier mite program from Hat Trick Hockey (two new 3x3 size rinks in SLP). I thought this was a great idea, but I later heard there were many complaints from the parents because they wanted the larger ice. Does anybody know if this is true? ...
