Oh your from Canada, now i know why you don't like the jackets. Perhaps if it was plaid you wouldn't find the need to rip the people who wear them.
Just a tad sensitive about this topic of team wear, are we?
No not at all, i actually could care less but when you and others start ripping people on what they wear ... well thats a window into how accepting and open, or close minded you are towards others tastes and choices. Indicates how how judgmental one is.

No, I am a parent of a skater involved at the 2001 level and I could care less to rank the teams, if you and your child are happy with the team, if you and your child are being treated with respect, if your child is improving those things I care about. Which team is better? No. Some of these programs are better because they treat kids like crap, you write your check there, I'll write mine where my son is happy and getting better. Course, he's not my oldest skater and I'm a muck lover [/quote]

Isn't your 2001 skater a practice player with STE?

This thread cracks me up. We have posts on here saying....i think its silly to rank them now because when they are older it will change! LoL, huh duh! Some people think that the older age hockey is the only hockey that matters because thats when they are closer to becoming a professional player! I think thats hilarious....only a handful of kids go on to play division 1 never mind the NHL. Of course things change as the kids get older and the teams have different players. Does anyone really think everything stays the same from when they are 8 years old to 17??? Give me a break. Maybe the original poster used the worng word. Rank obviously makes people think of the NHL draft etc. I try and know everything I can about every team I coach against and that my son tries out for/plays for. What is wrong with being prepared? I am curious to know who the top 01 teams are for the 2010 spring season. I like to know who the top teams are for all the age groups and watch and see how each team progresses from one year to the next while under going changes. I appreciate watching good hockey. I saw some teams participate in "AAA" tournaments that had NO BUSINESS being there. They were way out of their league in an open tournament. THis shouldnt happen. It wastes that teams money and the teams they compete against.
As a coach trying to enter tournaments you want to enter a tournament that has a very even playing field as compared to your teams ability. I don't want to enter a tournament against teams I am going to beat by 10 goals and vice versa. The only way to know this is by having some sort of system to "rank " them. Even if its your own system. So, If it didn't matter who the better teams were, why do we keep score?

LoL, thats kind of how I felt when I read the line
If dads want to rank teams made up of 8 year old, they can go right ahead. Just know that those "rankings" will change quite a bit in a few years assuming the rosters don't turnover
Why does everything have to be about the future? What about now? Who knows what will happen in the future.....live for today!

Because that's exactly what these dads are doing....They are projecting their kid's abilities into the future. It's really odd that parents want to attach greatness to their kids at such younger and younger ages. Let the kid develop. Don't spend time worrying about how they stack up against others. Some hockey parents take pride in being a "Machine Parent" or a "Blade Parent", when it doesn't really mean a damn thing.

None of this means that I don't think they should be "keeping score". Of course they should.

I'm sure it's the same in other sports as well, but it really it amusing (and sad) observing parents and how they live through their kids. I actually see parents get angry at the outcome of games played between 8 year olds, can you believe that? When I was eight, my mom would sit in the stands and read a book. She wasn't up there shaking a cowbell and screaming at me and my teammates to "MOVE YOUR FEET!!!!!!!"

Generalize much?

I find that most parents of good players at this age understand that their kids are good players at this age. Sure, some are looking ahead. Those are a minority.

The formula is pretty simple. At the youngest ages kids get better quickly. Parents see this and encourage. I know several kids skating 6 days a week this summer. Of course they are going to be among the best their age.

Is there anything wrong with this?

People that are over the top have clearly soiled your opinion of every one that sets foot in an arena.

That's not true at all....But, when you are reading some of these posts in these threads, it's not that much of a leap to speculate on the "nuttyness" going on. All these threads bashing the Blades, the Machine, the Monopoly. Only nutjob parents allow themselves to get all worked up over which group of kids gets to play in the Brick or "who's team is best" at this young of an age....or any age, for that matter.

I'm completely aware that most parents are good people who aren't over the top when it comes to summer AAA hockey. They, as I, enjoy watching their kids compete and have fun. What I'm saying is that it's just as easy to spot the kooky parents on this board as it is to spot them at the rink. Am I making this up? I'm sure you've been to many games and seen the same as I. Would a normal dad go into a message board and start ripping on a team of 10 year olds who are competing in the Brick??? Do normal dads scream at 8-10 year old players and the refs from the stands and angrily pace back and forth during a meaningless game? If you think I'm over-generalizing, go to a game between some of these teams and just sit and observe. Like I said before, not every parent is acting this way (most don't)...but the number of them that do is pretty sad.

Nowhere am I saying that kids shouldn't be skating and training at a young age. Go for it. It all helps. Just keep your head on your shoulders, your kid will appreciate it.
