Like I did in another topic, I congratualated HM and many of the other teams from the metro with a fine tournament. That is what this was, a tournament. I saw in other hockey tournaments held this year some teams didnt do so hot that were in this tournament. Yes, this is the state tournament and it takes alot to get this far. I also stated in an earlier post to this topic that the metro has to remember that many of the outstate teams don't recruit. And Roseau, like many other schools at the Class AA level, only have a school the size equal to that of one grade of students at the larger metro high schools. Thus, a smaller talent pool. Both Roseau and Warroad have put many players in division 1 and the NHL. I am not from Roseau and I have been around many of the players and experts in my travels and usually they are respectful towards each others programs where ever they come from. Come on guys, this is the "state of hockey". Many of you sound terrible on here. Roseau has a good program with history on it's side. They won the tournament last year. And beat solid teams to do it. They didnt this year and solid teams beat them with incredible game plans that were executed perfectly to win it, namely HM and BSTM. I am not sour as I think all these teams will be back in the years to come and continue to put on spectacular state tournaments such as this one and all the others in the past has been.
Well said! Alot of this talk is because Roseau had won last season and they were unbeaten this season. No one said a word about a weak schedule last year when Roseau won it. All this came down to is alot of the City people mad because it wasnt one of the elite city teams at the top for onceQuietmale wrote:Like I did in another topic, I congratualated HM and many of the other teams from the metro with a fine tournament. You guys have caught me and thrown me back in about 10 times.
Some just take it to seriously

There is plenty of good fishin in the metro lakes too.
But when us cidiots are fishin for Muskies on Lake Calhoun, and we talk about who has got a good hockey team , most of us look at the team's talent, its record and the schedule it plays , and who they beat. The rest is a lot of crap.
I know that sounds crazy but its just the way some of us are.

I'd say this was a down year for the north in general. Duluth Marshall and Warroad were the only northern teams that really lived up to expectations. Rapids is rebuilding a bit after their title runs, and Moorhead was retooling as well. A vaunted I Falls team bowed out early, as did 7AA favorite Duluth East, which got stuck with its biggest rival in the section semis. Cloquet had a very mediocre year until the section playoffs when they caught lightning in a bottle. And Roseau, for all the hype, perhaps was expected to do too much. These things happen. What the north accomplishes in proportion to the cities i still impressive, and they'll be back.

Well since its a regional tournament, Roseaus many appearances would be an indication of little competition.puckman22 wrote:Who has the most state tournament appearences?packerboy wrote:Edina lost to HM;split with BSM and Tonka.

Hockey players, Fighters and Winners!
I think most if not all will agree that those that can play hockey well do, those that can't play well fight or play dirty, and those that can do both, Win!
As my name implies, I am from up north and therefore I tend to cheer for the northern teams.
However, I wish to congratulate HM on their performance at the state tournament!
They obviously played a combination of tough hockey combined with enough skill to over-power the competition throughout the tournament.
When a team chooses to play rough, they know that they will generally pay their dues in terms of penalty minutes. This was certainly true in the game against Roseau, made evident by 18 minutes of penalties against Roseau's 10 minutes. Additionally, reviewing the game will show that HM was fortunate that much was overlooked.
Roseau was schooled in that game as I don't believe they expected their classy finesse style of play would be challenged with such a blunt, brute display of force, but hey, that's hockey! To top it off, HM was not without substancial finesse and skill of their own.
HM certainly prepared for what was required to match up to their opponents, and earned the title of state champions! Once again, congratulations!
I feel one point needs to be emphasized though, and although it was one isolated incident, it is imperative to point out the negative impact it has had on hockey fan's view of HM. I hope that Isaac Kohls understands that his cross checking attack of Aaron Ness rates as one of, if not the most chicken Sh#t move in high school hockey! I've played and watched and loved the game for most of my 47 years, and rarely have I seen such a cowardly violent act as that! 2 minutes for cross checking?! I'll end this post now out of respect for all.

Retaliation!
who_b_dat,
Eight minutes into the second period I watched the body slam behind the net initially with jubilation! Only because the chicken sh#t move by Isaac Kohls was etched in my mind. Tell me that you wouldn't have wanted to retaliate after something like that?
I'm not even from Roseau. It's not blind loyalty to a team that sparks my disgust.
Slamming someone after the buzzer when the puck is no where near and the "victim" had no clue that anything was coming!
I'd like to think I'm speaking for everyone when I say that I would not wish that on any of the players from any of the teams!
That was a severe spinal or neck injury waiting to happen!
Just plain chicken sh#t!

Are you reffering to the flagrant check from behind by the Roseau player early in the game that was called "boarding" or did all the Roseau fans forget about that.Mikeofthenorth wrote:who_b_dat,

i for one will have to admit the cidiots were right. i tried hard to convince them of their retardation but was unsucessful. now that the writing is on the wall i have to take a long hard look at my viewpoint. strange things happen in the game of hockey. edina goes in last year with what one loss and go down to grand rapids. than roseau beat them 5-1 in the final. i still say roseau could play with these teams but it was a wake up call non the less. schedule ment nothing last year and ment everything this year. i have to beleive this should convince roseau to make that trip to the cities for the holiday tourney to better prepare for what lies ahead. you have to know where you stand and at what level you need to be at before its too late.
The truth is: we dont know about Roseau. They may be way better than they looked vs HM and BSM.watchdog wrote:i for one will have to admit the cidiots were right. i tried hard to convince them of their retardation but was unsucessful. now that the writing is on the wall i have to take a long hard look at my viewpoint. strange things happen in the game of hockey. edina goes in last year with what one loss and go down to grand rapids. than roseau beat them 5-1 in the final. i still say roseau could play with these teams but it was a wake up call non the less. schedule ment nothing last year and ment everything this year. i have to beleive this should convince roseau to make that trip to the cities for the holiday tourney to better prepare for what lies ahead. you have to know where you stand and at what level you need to be at before its too late.
With HM, BSM, and Edina, there is some "round robin " history this season that includes another great team in Tonka. We know that these teams can play with one another and if we had a semifinal night with those 4 teams , it could turn out different every time we did it
All we know about Roseau is what we saw this weekend. Maybe there isnt anythng that can be done about that due to travel and expenses but ..there it is.

Mike of the North,
I don't think anyone on this forum or anyone associated with Hill-Murray condones the cross check after the buzzer. I wish it had not happened and I would guess the kid wishes he could undo it. I am going to give a decent, well rounded kid the benefit of the doubt by assuming that he was caught up in the emotions of the game and he made a poor choice. That being said, it was up to the ref to dish out the penalty and he chose to go with a 2 minute cross check.
The game was very physical. This went both ways as there were some Roseau penalties that should have been called and some unnecessary roughness toward the Hill goalie.
Roseau is a great community with a hockey program that is admired and respected state wide. Aaron Ness is an amazing player and I am glad he was recognized for his accomplishments. What frustrates me though is that Roseau has so many other great players who were overlooked by the media hype. They had 19 other kids out there skating their hearts out. I hope the media and town didn't put too much pressure on Aaron. He is just one kid and as you said in an earlier post. "One kid does not a team make."
Enjoy the off season.

It is not always the best team that wins the tournament. You are correct congrats to Hill you cannot take anything away from them. Yet does 2 loses automatically take away from what the Rams did the 2 years?

Lots of interesting points - and BS, too. One thing for certain, strong v weak schedule and comparative scoring talk is total bunk. Have the same tourney five weeks in a row and you'd have five different results.
I'm happy for the success of the local Catholic boys but fully recognize that the tourney has no drama, no pinache, without the northern teams - especially Roseau (I hate MSHSL messing with 7AA). Who among you didn't feel the anti-climax of Edina v. Hill compared to Roseau v Edina?
However, like CDH two years ago, Hill executed their game plans wonderfully. They had great goaltending and took advantage of every opportunity.
Roseau picked a bad time to go flat-footed AND face a talented, well-coached team in Hill. And you can't fault a team that was on a 40+ game quest for being down the game after it was over (BSM was a helluva team that still had something to prove).
BSM's style might have been the one that beat Hill - if not for a bounce, a deflection, a weak call.
Edina might be champs again - one pipe, one tenth of a second changes everything. As they have for 50 years, they won and lost with grace (I'm still not cheering for you guys - but that's the way you prefer it).
Another season, many great teams, one champ. Fortunately for me and mine, the mellow pace of baseball, golf, fishing and sitting on the deck helps us through the hockey withdrawals.
