Re: A nice relaxing weekend
Anybody else think this past weekend went a lot better without the aggravation of another Viking disaster? I didn't yell at the TV once on Sunday and enjoyed a historic Gopher win via a small Watchman TV while camping on Saturday.

Re: A nice relaxing weekend
Agreed. I did some stuff around the house. Was outside all day Sunday. Enjoyed the day.

But honestly, after the Penn State debacle, I didnt watch any of the Gopher game. I thought theyd get beat up again so I went fishin. Caught 2 measley fish. Figures.

Re: A nice relaxing weekend
So you were out on a boat this weekend packerboy? I hope 'fishing' isn't a metaphor for something that you'd have trouble explaining to your wife, much like some red faced purple suited persons are having to do right now...

I thought the same thing regarding the Gophers, if someone hadn't brought the Watchman I'd have waited till Sunday to find out about the game--and would've been kicking myself for missing it.

Re: A nice relaxing weekend
Yup, I was on a boat alright. But my idea of what to do on a boat is a little different that what our Purple have in mind.

Say.......read Souhans column today. Its a ripoff of my post on page 2 of this thread.

Character/Leadership
So whats the answer? Everybody is sick and tired of this crap.

Why have the Vikings had so many problems off the field?

People say "This never happened when Bud Grant coached the team".... Bull. But at least they were smart enough not to get caught.

I think that there has been a lack of character and leadership from the top on down since Bud.

The owners have been obsessed with greed.

The coaches have been incompetent or full of themselves with their own moral issues.

The result is predictable. Just like in a famly that lacks parental guidance.

But lets put those purple flags on our cars; make sure the dome is sold out;and dont even think about less than about 75% of the local sports coverage being devoted to these clowns.

I go to look at the sports section this AM, and I cant find the ALCS game coverage until the back page. We are all to blame.

Sid Hartman always campaigns to build these goofs a new stadium with the threat that they will leave if we dont. Well...........................

Re: Character/Leadership
And Reusse takes Daunte to task for his lack of leadership on this in today's Strib too. How about Fred Smoot saying that he didn't rent one of the boats, next he'll be denying he was even there. They get rid of a guy in Moss because of his attitude and behavior, it seems like everyone else on the team is stepping it up when it comes to misbehaving.

packerboy, you're right, this starts at the top, they've had an absentee owner, a head coach busted for scalping tickets.

I'd suggest suspending all 17 players, assuming that's the number, for a game and docking them a game's worth of pay with the message being that we'd rather lose with guys who care (or are at least more discrete) than win with a bunch of idiots who would put chasing tail and carousing in public above their job, their teammates, the organization and the community. I'd put the team on notice that any further public incidents would result in similar penalties. I'd have the 17 players publicly apologize to their teammates and the community for their behavior and thoughtlessness. In my eyes, the real issue is the fact that they did this in public.

Who knows if this would have any effect though, people would rather watch a team of talented thugs and ex cons over a team of losing choirboys.

Re: Character/Leadership
With regard to your last point Chris, there have been a lot of teams/organizations that have won with solid people.

The Vikings for one.

I dont think this organization has the warewithall nor the guts to try to do it right.

If Zyg is as smart as I think he is......get the broom and clean house.

Re: Character/Leadership
Is Mark Chmura available? Perhaps he can counsel the Vikes on proper behavior.

Man, what a circus this has become. And they want the public to pony up to help build a new stadium? Maybe one-way tickets out of the Twin Cities via Northworst Airlines....errr...Delta are in order instead. Would this team really be missed?

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Re: Character/Leadership
Starting with Keith Millard, the Vikings have many role models for bad behavior to choose from, I think they'll be able to leave Chewie alone.

packerboy, you're right, teams have won with decent people, but the point I was trying to make was that winning trumps solid citizenship any day. The boat event was egregious enough to be an issue even if the team was winning but it would go away quickly with a couple of wins. With the team in disarray it will linger longer. Of course, a solid argument could be made that this kind of thing is the sign of a team in disarray.

Re: Character/Leadership
I thought Jerry Burns ran a pretty tight ship, he had some personalities in Millard and Kramer, but nothing like has happend under Denny and Tice. The NFLPA has too much power, basically undermining authority of coaches and owners, but it's the same with all 4 major sports unions.

What really dissapoints me is that Daunte said after Moss left "that this my team". Nice leadership Daunte, you're well on your way to pissing away a Hall of Fame career. There is a reason some of these guys were free agents, and that they came from bad teams may say more about them than anybody realized.

Re: Character/Leadership
goldy, Burns couldnt say 5 words without using the F-inhimer twice.....in public. His press confernces sounded like a golf cart backing up.

I am sure he is a good guy and I know he was an excellent offensive coordinator but not the finest NFL head coaching material.

I also remeber a lot of off field issues with Millard and the DWIs.

On another note...I read in the paper today that Tice is going to start cracking down on guys. How inept.

You dont become a disciplinarian 5 weeks into the season. Any T-Ball coach knows that you start with a tight rein and then ease up as the season goes on. Its way easier to ease up than it is to crack down. This guy is so bad. The longer he has the job, the more evident it becomes that he just doesnt have the tools to do it.

Re: Character/Leadership
If I remember right, the Vikes had so many DWIs in the mid to late '80s that the Bloomington strip where most occurred was dubbed the Purple Triangle by Patrick Reusse. Packerboy's right, Burnsie's language was so blue it would make a saloonkeeper in Deadwood blush.

I was thinking it wouldn't hurt to keep Tice on till the end of the season, an interim coach is usually a lame duck which is essentially what Tice is now, but things appear so out of hand that canning Tice now might send a message to the team that playtime is over.

Re: Character/Leadership
Why is Studwell and the rest of the front office staff getting off so easy on this one--I thought he was the director of player personnel ?? Isn't he the one that has a say in who we bring in here?

Re: Character/Leadership
Its a good point madjag but the guys that were brought in werent troublemakers. At least, that I am aware of..... except for Koren Robinson and his problem is with chemical
dependency.

We dont know how good these guys are yet. They have been so poorly coached and badly prepared for the games..... no one even knows what they are doing.

Thats why I agree with ChrisK. Get rid of the guy and lets see what we have personel wise.

Maybe then Studwell should take some heat.

Re: Character/Leadership
Sharper was let go by one of the worst pass defenses in football. Money wasn't an issue with him like it was for the two guards they lost.

Cowart was an underacheiver on defense, and let go by a coach who is known for discipline.

Smoot came from one of the best defenses in the NFL, and also was let go by another coach who is known for discipline.

It's not like we picked up the best and the brightest here as far as character is concerned.

BUd Grant has his fair share of problems too, Carl Eller wasn't exactly a stand up citizen in his day either. I have a little trouble blaming a coach, any coach, for a players problems with drugs or alcohol as long as after they get caught they get help. BUt to have half a team screw up like this does reflect on the coach. In the NFL contracts aren't guarenteed, Ziggy ought to dump the whole lot of them.

Re: Character/Leadership
Yup, its definitley Daunte's team now.

Re: Character/Leadership
I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! Man are the Vikes good. They are so fun to watch, they play the right way. Let's be honest here, would in not be best to lose most of our remaining games and get Bush or Maroney? The North is a joke, our team is a joke, our coaching staff is a joke, at least it seems that our new owner will be a positive. It's week six and I have officially thrown in the towel.
