Probably could have used a better choice of words than "breeding" and "weening" LOL.

Which of the current DE players are locks for D1 and which ones are potential for D1 play?

What DE players are likely to be out of Thursdays game vs GR due to injury, illness, or double secret probation?

I'm not quite comfortable labeling anyone a lock before they commit, but here's a list of prospects: Olson, Toninato, Valesano, Moore, Beaulieu, Repensky, Lundgren, Randolph. A few others may have a shot if they work at it, but we'll have to wait and see.

Olson and Repensky are out hurt for Thursday's game, and goalie Dylan Parker is out for other reasons.

And you most likely won't hear anything about commitments for a while. They do a good job of keeping it hushed, but I know that Randolph, Dom, and Trevor already know what their plans are for next year. That whole first line are D1 prospects and then toss in Beaulieu, Toscano, Valesano, and Lundgren. After that...who knows, the offseason will show.

BTW, love the breeding and weening terminology ;)

I'm not an East fan, but I've seen them play twice. They are fast and move the puck well. They will be tough to beat. I think they beat Gr. Rapids by at least 4 goals.

East has three problems coming into this game; Olson, Repensky, Parker. All three are out.

Rapids also has the home ice and a ton of motivation after what happened in last season's 7AA final.

Rapids by one, and I'd love to be wrong on this prediction.

Rapids was soundly defeated at home by a class A school. Maybe the Hawks will be dropped from the schedule next year??

Not to mention Meirs with his heavily iced and wrapped shoulder ;) good thing young guys heal fast. Hopefully it won't affect his play because East will need him and Beaulieu to be on their games. Is this game still not being streamed anywhere? Some GR techy needs to throw up a camera attached to their laptop, prop up a site, and PayPal for $10 a feed...

Cloquet parent just told me that Olson is out for the year. Really - or is this just a Cloquet parent's wish come true???

For the second year now. No big deal for Rapids, they will be back next year and try to stick it to the Hawks like most respectable programs would do.

I think East will win this one though.

I see the smirks...

Hermantown won't be the same next year as past two...IMO...last year went on road in Feb and Kyle Rau had to score with a tic left on the clock in OT and Hermantown won 5-1 at home (against GR, a little deceiving score by how game was played). East beat Rapids twice by 2-1 scores last year and we know how the AA & A championship games ended last season. East & Hermantown both returned the majority of their squads. Wouldn't it have been nice to see EP and Hermantown this year? My guess is the AA team would've lost by same score GR did last night - I think Lee Smith knew that also which 13? seniors on last years EP team.

So back to GR and East. GR will be a bit upset after the Hermantown game. Not sure how this team will react and D.East missing a few kids will probably even this one up. I would've picked D.East by 3 if Olson wasn't out or Repensky...but then I also heard that Rapids had been 20-0-2 at home before last night?

I think Rapids could win tomorrow. If they played a best of 7 no question East wins that. But in a one game setting, rivalry type game, and with what sounds like East missing some top players - who knows. I still feel GR is a quality team. From a coaching standpoint the GR coach will have no problem getting his players full attention after the loss to Hermantown...

My caveat is if the GR tender plays like he did vs. Edina - all bets are off. You will not beat the top teams if you let in any soft goals. Trade goalies in that game and Rapids would've won.

Pre-game trivia

Post by east hockey »

Pointless facts about the game/series:

Last five games between these teams:

3/3/11: East 2, Grand Rapids 1 (7AA finals)
1/13/11: East 2, Grand Rapids 1
1/14/10: East 5, Grand Rapids 4
1/28/09: East 6, Grand Rapids 2
1/10/08: East 4, Grand Rapids 2

The teams have played 36 times since the 1973-74 season (this is as far back as my records go). East has a 27-8-1 lead in that span. 18 of these games were decided by one goal or less.

They have met seven times in playoff games (East is 6-1), and four of those were section finals (4-0).

After Grand Rapids thumped East 9-1 in the 1974-75 season, they didn't play again for fourteen years. (Hey! Another case where East lost to a team and wouldn't schedule them after that loss )

The two teams were in different sections from 1974-75 through 1990-91. East went to state once over that period, Rapids went to state ten times, winning three championships.

Since throwing the teams back into the same section in the 1991-92 season, East has gone to state twelve times, winning two championships. Rapids has gone twice, ending second place both times.

Good luck to both teams!

I had heard it was Holum, Bischoff and Stejskal but my sources are old and unreliable. So not sure if that story is 100 percent correct.

Isn't there some kind of test for that during the recruiting process?
