FLAT IN SECTION FINALS??

Post by Snap Shot »

Okay....first hats off to EP. They move very well as a unit. They were always moving their feet tonight, getting to loose pucks, back checking and attacking the net that was the difference. They could very well be playing Saturday night at the X.

Deacon I think your assessment was right on.

I am really mad at Tonka's (lack of) effort tonight. They were FLAT for the second straight year in a section final. I mean c'mon, you HAVE to leave everything out there in terms of effort in these kind of games. Feet were not moving; they laid back and were tentative on loose pucks all night. Maybe their coach is a little too analytical or something, you have to get kids fired up for this game!

Some technical things. Max G. is the biggest kid on the ice and he uses the same move every time he's attacking the zone with the little dipsy doodle and dry to pull it around the D to the outside. Max....you’re the biggest guy on the rink. Split the D and in the middle make them stop you! They should almost run this as a play, have him crash the middle and then have the other two forwards follow him on either side about 5-10 feet behind. Either he gets to the net, or he takes out 2 D and the puck is waiting there for the trailers.

D was not crashing all night. Numerous loose pucks high in the slot they could have won the race to, but they laid back instead. That's why you have another D to cover. Forwards did a lot of circling, but didn't crash the net hard. Sometimes this is an ugly game...you have to take it to the hole to win in games like this.

Good season for Tonka, no disrespect intended. But a very disappointing finish for the second year in a row. They're young, and if they get back there next year I hope they bring more effort and intensity.

Agree with previous posters. Saw Tonka play 4 other games this year. Didn't look like the same team - very flat. Very few scoring good chances. Maybe it was the Olympic sheet. EP did a great job finishing. Congrats to them.

I think good teams tend to make their opponent not look as good. I think that was the case tonight. If Tonka didn't look as good as previously seen during the season, I'd say that has more to do with what EP did rather than Tonka being "flat" or what have you. However, I thought both teams looked a few steps slower than the team in green in the 6PM game.

Tonka may have outshot EP, but most of it was outside and nothing really around the net. I think EP is very sound defensively, and they are the type of team that could really frustrate a team like Edina: solid defense, responsible forwards defensively, and a goalie that isn't going to let in a softie and will play well.

Congrats to EP. Congrats to Tonka on a good season.

Im pretty sure that the move that he was using worked a bunch of times. He got a couple really good scoring chances when he did it, it was just the goalie was playing very good and he could not get it past him. And it works he can get around them, so why does he have to try somethign different?

Because when you're the biggest and strongest player on the ice and you take yourself outside, you are doing a big favor for the other teams D...that's where they want you. You are also helping the goalie by shooting from more of an angle. If you challenge the D physically you make them try to stop you, instead of stopping yourself. You may also draw a penalty and help your team by getting a power play.

Not saying he need to bull rush every time, but once in a while...yes, absolutely!

Losing a section final is really tough, but you have to give a lot of credit to the season Tonka had. Those kids worked hard and had a lot of success, and beat at least 3 teams that will be in St. Paul next week.
