Uh-oh.

Twins starting SS: 1
Johan Santana: 0

LIVANTANA.

8 wins in his 9 starts.

The Twins score 7 so Johan's start will probably be a non event but we will see.

Dont look now but the season is 1/4 over and The Factor is at 0.

The Twins lose the best pitcher in baseball and 2 time Cy Young winner and they don't feel it one bit.

Interesting.

The Factor will remain at 0.

Livantana did well Friday night but the 2 run Twins didnt give him any support.

Johan pitched fine but he was anything but overpowering so The Factor has determined that it would not have made any difference and the Twins still would have lost on Fri night.

Moneyball when played well is fun to see.

No. The Factor , as always, has invited discussion on the issue but so far , no one has disagreed.

Please feel free to do so.

I'm feeling good about the findings of this Factor thing.

To the best of my knowledge, I never posted anything saying that the Twins should resign Santana.

Here' to Livantana, our new, cheaper ace.

Irishmans Shanty, the new Twins GM, invites the Mets GM to his establishment; hooks him up and gets him drunk.

As a result, the Mets GM says to him "We will give you back Santana and pay half of his salary , if you give us Livan Hernandez and give us back Carlos Gomez.

How will IS respond?

How should he respond?

The Factor wants to know.

I don't want to speak for the new GM here, but I think this seems obvious...

Get back Santana without having to give up Jason Kubel? Where do we sign?!

The correct answer is:

Give the Mets Livantana and Cargo

And for eating half of Santana's huge contract I will require the Mets to give us their top prospect this time. Obliged if one of my staff members could dig up his name for me. Omar will be here by 6pm CDT.

How could I have forgotten.

It is hard to analyze a trade or a free agent signing without considering The Jason Kubel Factor.

Alright , we will add this into the story: They consulted Kubel and he gave it his blessing.

Jason Kubel.

Jason Boofin Kubel.

You gotta be kiddin me.

IS, I wouldnt do it.

1. I think Santana's dominant years may be behind him and even at half salary its a big chunk of change.

2. I think Cargo has a chance to be a faster Kirby Puckett.

3. An ace pitcher is not what this club needs. They need guys who can get on base , score runs and HIT THE BOOFIN BALL

Santana deal: $137.5 million / 2 = $68.75 million

You're looking at Johantana for $11mil/yr through 2013.

I can't pass on getting Santana for Meche & Silva money and a guy who might be better than Cargo.

Big thanks to Neutron for Met prospect list.

IS, you changed the deal and hence the hypothetical and the question posed by The Factor.

This is not acceptable behavior.

It's Livantana and Cargo for Santana with Johan's salary being split.
There is no prospect in the deal.

I do not part with Cargo and Livantana to take on Santana at half price. Nope.

Sorry boys, The Factor was on a brief hiatus with no computer access.

This is a close one.

The both pitched on May22.

Livantana was rocked by Texas in 5.1 innings but the bullpen lost the game. He gave up 5 ERs but the Twins scored 6.

Johan gave up 4 in 7 innings in a loss to ATL.

If Johan was on the hill would the Twins have won?

The Factor says "no" and that the leaky bulpen of 2008 would have still lost it.

The Factor acknowledges that this is a close one and maybe even could be considered controversial, but recall that the last close one was given to the minus side.

As any good umpire would do, we even out the close ones that are on the black.

The Factor remains at 0 unless a guest commentator can come on and make a compelling argument to go minus.

PS It doesnt look like Santana was all the Mets needed to win does it?
They are 23-26 with their manager's job hanging by a thread.
Interesting, isnt it?

packerboy wrote:Well, this is a tough one but after much deliberation, soul searching and prayer, I am moving The Factor to 0.

Johan pitched well enough so his team could scratch out a win. Livantana put them in a 7-0 hole. Even though the hitters were shut out, I am saying that we missed Johan and will move it back to even or , as some would say , all square.

The Factor will keep in mind this very close call and maybe give the nod the other way on the next close one. But hey, that's baseball.

Stay tuned to The Factor as we follow what the loss of Johan Santana means to the Twins in the way of victories.
Forgot about this one, The Factor remaining fair and balanced.
No arguement here.

Willy is doomed, he brought up the race card.

Wel, it looked like we were going to -1 last night.

With Johan pitching well vs FLA , going 7 and giving up 3, and Livantana getting knocked around a bit by KC, The Factor was ready to go negative.

But Craig Monroe and the boys bailed out Livantana and the 3 ring circus that the Twins defense has become to leave The Factor at 0.

I wonder if they have special helmets for outfielders. Cuddy and Young may need one to get through the season.

But The Factor doesnt care how they do it. Sanatana would have made the win easier last night but whether they win 9-8 or 9-3 makes no difference to The Factor.

Almost 1/3 of the way through and The Factor is at 0.

Interesting.

I think I will forward a link to this thread to Omar Minaya and the New York Post.

I wonder if they'll find it interesting.

At least send it to ESPN, that way you'd kill several birds with one stone.
1- It would highlight what some people have said all along, paying a player that plays 20% of the games that kind of money doesn't make sense

2- It would let ESPN know that there is life between the coasts

3- If they looked around the site maybe they'd discover hockey

This could change everything.

Imagine a "Cyber Factor" that established a "No Spin Zone" for sports discussions.

"Talking Points Memos" about sports would now be possible in a fair and balanced presentation instead of those we now hear from the left leaning liberal media.

Interesting.

A "Factor Follow Up" on this is in the making.

The Factor is a joke. PB talks out of both sides of his mouth trying to keep it positive or at the very least, zero. :?
