Carl Eller never got paid a $87,500 signing bonus...heck, he probably never made that much in a single season!

He might need the money as the NFLPA does little for retired players, he played when pro athletes did not make nearly what they do today, and he had a serious drug problem, so he probably wasted a ton of money on cocaine.

As for Okposo - he should have waited until the end of the season OR made this move last off-season when people expected it to happen. Of course none of us know all the ins and outs of the situation, but it does look like he is quitting on his teammates doing it 1/2 through the season.

Good luck in the future, but pro hockey is even less fun than college hockey, which is less fun than high school hockey. Hopefully he will have a nice NHL career or it might be back to the books when you are 29 - which is harder to do when your dreams die out.

Nut, I dont disagree with any of that.

But I think its very comical for everybody to be calling the kid classless and then all the oh, boo hoo hoo cuz he left in mid season.

He did exactly what we have programed him to do. Look for the best opportunity for himself and take it when presented. We programed him to do that since he was a Mite. The program does not include any exceptions for mid season.

We obviously did a good job on him as well as many others.

We cant worship all of the Elite, AAA, Junior Stud, , UR a Superstar, USA National special player , Team Under whatever best there ever was stuff, etc etc and then whine when they leave in mid season.

Packerboy -

Good points...the elitist mentality is deep in hockey - probably more than any other team sport.

It is also a reflection of society in general.

Sadly, I have to agree with you.

I know people that are glad their kid chose not to play hockey.

Reasons:

Too much time
Too much money

Those people are affluent.

But its the same in every sport.

I know people who are in girls volleyball that can tell you as many horror stories as any hockey parent. The elitism, travel and time comittment is insane.

Hockey gets a lot of attention here so it also takes a lot of heat. Hockey also has avenues that other sports don't . There are no Juniors for football and Bball. If there was , it would be the same thing. Kids would leave for better opportunities.

How many good football, Bball players stay in college 4 years any more?

Kyle Okposo is a good kid and a product of the environment we have all created and continue to support. So when he leaves in midseason and we need to hand out blame, there is plenty to go around.

Leaving any program early, high school or college is truly an individual decision to further themselves. Choices are made and those people must decide carefully and live with their choice.

Coaches trying to build around players that all of a sudden leave, are struggling to adapt to help the team win. When a player leaves at the end of the season or even just before the season begins, there is a window of time the coach and team can adjust. Leaving in the middle of the season just throws a wrench into the team design.

However, untimely injuries occur and teams adjust accordingly. Many times a player not getting the opportunity will now be able to step up and fill the gap. The Gophers should have ample players to do so.
