Back in the day, the middle infield positons were expected to slap the ball all over the park and move runners. They were your typical light hitters and were expected to do so. The corners, catchers and most outfields were more often expected and still are to produce the blasts. Look around the league, with the exception of the year he won the batting title and everyone was in love with him, his high school approach to batting(put it in play the other way)is annoying at best. I believe he has all the tools to be a perennial all star although I would appreciate it if a guy that size stopped flicking loopers to left. Just my opinion. Surprised with all your hit the boofin talk that you like the way he swings.packerboy wrote:That limps.
Carew was big enough to hit HRs. He was 6 foot 180. Hank Aaron was 6 foot 180.
Killebrew was 5'11".

I never understood the "power postion" argument. Who cares what position your power hitters come from? Think the Cubs should've benched Ryne Sandberg? How about Cal Ripken Jr? Should the O's have moved him to RF because he hits home runs?
Just because historically, the corner infielders, outfielders and more recently catchers are HR hitters, doesn't mean that they have to be. The offensive strategy is simple regardless of the postion you play in field - score runs. That's it. Whether it's bunting yourself on and running your self in, or hitting a long fly, you have to score runs. If Joe is a singles hitter, so be it. As long as he's consistent and and able to generate runs, he shouldn't be obligated to hit the long ball on a regular basis...
Same goes for the rest of them. Now they just have to do it.

Carew played more first base than second base.
Catchers these days arent power hitters. In fact, there really aren't many good hitters playing the position anymore. Most of them are journeymen defensive players.
Even in the old days, catchers were not the best HR hitters. Bench , Berra, Carter, Parrish and Fisk were the exception not the rule.
I wish Mauer hit more HRs but thats not their problem. They need to quit trying to fit round pegs into square holes and get some guys in here who can............. HIT THE BOOFIN BALL

Craig Monroe seemed to be better than Jacque tonight. That and I've seen numerous places that Detroit fans want him back... makes me wonder how great their lineup really is.
Keep it going Twins! I'll be in NY this week watching the Yanks take down the Tribe and watch the Twins keep jumping up the standings.

Well kids, I'd have to do some checking but I think this matches the longest win streak of last season. Maybe we're in store for some magic and excitement this summer.

Another thing that isn't a surprise around here is the thuggery being promoted by Neutron and Govs. While Neutron, the muscle of the operation, is taking a sledge hammer to the Tigers, Sox, Indians, and Royals, The Governor is busting up pavement like any good East Side Irish Crime Family does in order to dispose of the muscle's work.
Go Twins!

I know. So violent. They should pick them up and carry them around the bases.Irishmans Shanty wrote:Another thing that isn't a surprise around here is the thuggery being promoted by Neutron and Govs. While Neutron, the muscle of the operation, is taking a sledge hammer to the Tigers, Sox, Indians, and Royals, The Governor is busting up pavement like any good East Side Irish Crime Family does in order to dispose of the muscle's work.
