Rochester just completed the 12U and 10U tryouts. Lots of girls! Yeah, I know this is 1A forum but the 1AA forum has fallen asleep. My daughter ended up on the team that I had expected so all goes well for her. At 12U the A team will be competitive and the B team will be far better than last year. 10A will be good again. 14U will be done this weekend and it will consist of 8 experienced skaters and 5-7 novices. Lots of work to be done there. Girls that aren't on these teams will play in-house with some pretty good coaches. Only 3 girls are jumping to high school but none will get significant ice time.

Yes, and the small schools do not have enough players to support everything...jetjock wrote:I have heard that Austin is going with a U12B, U14B , JV, and Varsity. It will be interesting to see how the U14 and JV shake out. Usually you have one, or the other. It is the old choice of Expensive U14 with many games, or the cheap JV with a few games.

Will Austin hold off the 14U tryout until the JV team is set? Or will they just make their team and hope to minimize the number of girls that jump off to high school?jetjock wrote:I have heard that Austin is going with a U12B, U14B , JV, and Varsity. WoW hockey is season is coming so quick. My input is the way austin has been bonding and playing together the might have a chance to compete with albert lea and such. With the 3 defense that we now have we just might be the strongest on the team besides #12. She is leading in state records and still will be by the end of the year. No other teams can beat her out. They just cant it's impossible for them.

Swiss, what color is the sky in your world? You are dreaming. I can understand the arrogance of Albert Lea, but not you and Austin. This game has progressed to the point that one player, as good as she is, will not be able to carry the team. It is a team sport. Who would the 3 D be? I could see Ellingson and Moline maybe, but who else?
And knowing #12, and the humility and grace she has, I am sure she does not appreciate your post.
The All-time, All-star, Dream team of Albert Lea is the team to beat.
State goes through Albert Lea.
But , hey Swiss, thanks for the locker room material.

Austin does not have tryouts for U14. Barely enough kids. The only tryout they have is at the varsity level. The U14 was organized by parents that do not want their kids to play JV. They barely have enough for a U14. The questiion is, will there be enough kids for a JV.Rocket78 wrote: Will Austin hold off the 14U tryout until the JV team is set? I was wondering where you were going to get all those ladies.
I liked the Swiss post.
It shows a great attitude, and the knowledge that team is everything...

So if Austin does have a JV who will they play? Are there many JV teams in SE Minnesota? A few years ago Rochester used to take the bottom players from old Mayo/Lourdes team and combine them with the bottom of the JM/Century coop to play a few (4?) games. This season JM will have about 15 players, Mayo will have about 16 and Century around 18 so there is porbably no JV here. My metro contacts tell me that most of them have JV teams and because that they will not play more than 2-3 games against teams that can't give them a doubleheader for JV-varsity.jetjock wrote:Austin does not have tryouts for U14. They usually do not play many games because of this. Maybe 6 ( they are the longer highschool games though). It usually takes some work on a parent's part to set these up. It is mostly city teams. I am not an expert on the rules, but I think they are allowed to play some U14's. I guess the big advantage is the cheap ice. Ex. 7-8thgrader pays $40, a highschooler pays $70 for the entire season. I think at this level, SAGs would be very important. But then again I love SAGs at every level.Rocket78 wrote:

Wow! Your tax payers are Awesome!! It's great that they subisdize the hockey program to that extent.
I think the hockey activity fee in Rochester (all 3 programs) is $187. The 12UB is around $600 as a comparison. Because of the size of the RYHA program, the high school teams start practice early and the Mayo players must have last hour study hall in order to make it to practices. Century's administrators don't allow this so they usually have the "late" ice about an hour after school is out. JM seems to move around the most.
If my daughter was going to Mayo but still in middle school I would not let her jump to their high school team because the middle schools don't have study hall so they have to leave their last class early and I expect that will seriously effect your grades. The other pain would be how do you get them from middle school to the rink since they can't (legally
) drive. I know of 3 middle schoolers that are going to play high school last year. @ of them played 12UA last year and one of them played peewee C. I really don't expect to see any of them play much this year. I hope they like to practice.
How does the Rochester practice schedule compare to the 1A teams as far as time of day and being parent friendly?
jetjock, I too am a big fan of SAGs because of the quick decisions that need to be made and limited time and space. I have noticed that our girls are pretty good in both ends (they defend well and forecheck well) and they also transition well on turnovers but they seem to struggle most on what to do on the next few passes following the initial breakout passes. Our sping/summer/fall clinics will not help this too much because there were far too many girls to do anything full ice.

Austin's ice times are Girl's varsity 3:30-4:45 pm
JV 5-6:15 pm
Then when the boys start, Girl's varsity 3:30-4:45 pm
Boy's varsity 5-6:15 pm
and then they switch times every other week.
The JV's do the same thing in the other arena. School is out at 3:00.
Many of the 7th-9th graders carpool and get rides from the older kids. I know my daughter gives many rides to these kids. She really seems to enjoy it. Also, many of these parents give her gas $, which always puts a smile on a senior's face. Of course, being in a small town, the logistics for this are much easier.

Rochester finished their 14UA tryout tonight in a shared practice with the 12UA. Hmmm, a rather interesting way to do things. The 14U coach called the players over to the bench one at a time during the practice to give them the word. I actually felt bad for the coach and he looked pretty bummed out. The cut girls will be playing in the in house league. I talked with him after their ice and he wasn't very chipper. I guess its easier to just post numbers on a sheet of paper. We have 14UA (sort of. Half of them are in just their 2nd year of hockey), 12UA (should be pretty good), 12UB (way better then last year) and 10UA (3 strong returning players). In addition we will have 4 house league teams. Things will be looking up at the high schools 3-4 years down the road.
Hey, Winona is having a 14UA team this year! I don't remember them ever having an A team in this age group (93/94).

It's not good, but they will overcome!falcons89 wrote:How does the coaching arrangement, in Albert Lea, effect their chances at State?
Is this the weak spot in their armor?
Faribault is Great

I found this on the internet so it must be true; I thought it was kind of interesting

How is Title IX applied to athletics?
There are three basic parts of Title IX as it applies to athletics:
1.) Participation: requires that women be provided an equitable opportunity to participate in sports as men (not necessarily the identical sports but an equal opportunity to play).
2.) Scholarships: requires that female athletes receive athletic scholarship dollars proportional to their participation (e.g., if there are 100 male athletes/100 female athletes and a $200,000 scholarship budget, then the budget must be split $100,000 to men/$100,000 to women)
3.) Other Benefits: requires equal treatment in the provision of (1) equipment and supplies, (2) scheduling of games and practice times, (3) travel and daily allowance, (4) access to tutoring, (5) coaching, (6) locker rooms, (7) practice and competitive facilities, medical and training facilities and services, (9) publicity and promotions, (10) recruitment of student athletes, and (11) support services.

I watched Faribault in their last game. I believe they won out. They looked tough. It looked pretty much like their varsity team.
Albert Lea, Waseca, Redwing were not in it.
Northfield struggled in Tier one. But I do not know who was on there team. It could be like Austin, 19 players rostered ( many varsity players not playing due to fall sports) and playing young kids that will not be on the varsity team. So I probably would not use this as an indicator. I know Austin won all their games at the end but it was a 2 line team with a dominant guest goalie.

According to them, Yes. The real question would be; Who is going to crash their party?jetjock wrote:Congrats to the Albert Lea Soccer team on going to state. I saw many familiar hockey faces and names on that team. Hey Falcons, do you think this will carry over to the hockey season?
Maybe that will be our new name: Party Crashers!!

The season is almost here. We are ready.
