Twins 34-34 on 6/18

Reusse's column today is priceless, twisting the piranha and 'smell 'em' motifs around to describe the dead in the water Twins the last three games. You sure you're not the one writing this stuff packerboy?
And Sid Hartman's column brings up the concern that someone here (Goldy?), raised several weeks ago about Liriano and the stress the slider puts on his arm. It sounds like Liriano will be throwing the slider less often but that might also make him less effective.

Santana pitched his usual great game again today, good thing for the hapless bats as only 1 run was batted in, the others scoring on a double play ball and a throwing error.
I'm a beleiver in letting both Redman and Mauer be in the lineup on the same day, I think if you're going to get hurt you're going to get hurt you just can't help it, look at Castillo last night. As many pundants have pointed out; losing the DH spot on this team really isn't that big of a blow.
The pitching has held together remarkably well, though this weekend in the Bronx could get a bit dicey, showing that Packerboy has been right all along and the Twins really should have added a bat by the trading deadline. Morneau, Mauer, and Hunter went a combined 2 for 27 with no RBI in this series, obviously that's not going to cut it coming down the stretc.
*edit* While maybe Phil Nevin isn't an answered prayer, he does have 21 HR, 64 RBI, and hits .245 giving the Twins a much more viable option at at DH and maybe can spell Morneau at 1B some too. I like the move.

For anyone who is surprised by the recent power outage, let me remind you that this is the same club that trailed in 30 of their first 32 games. Though the pitching was much worse then the bats also contributed to that dubious stretch. The good news is that the Sox continue to allow the Twins to hang around. Since the All star break those defending champs are 21-24. The two losses to the Royals were tough to take but I am still of the opinion that the Twins are lucky to be in the position that they are. Even though the Twins are 30 over since June, it has always been the Sox race to loose.
With Ortiz down and Wells being shipped back to SD it looks like the Bosox have officially pulled into the pits. It's now down to two and I don't believe either horse can pull away, small leads may develop only to be lost again. The Sox had a great opportunity today to build a cushion as the Twins packed for the Bronx but even they showed the abilty to pee one away too. Too bad the Sox will avoid the new "Nasty Boyz" (Redman & Hudson) this weekend.

Great comments boys.
No matter how smart or full of ship we are in making our predictions(and we've all been both),this has just been a riot and I hope it will continue to be.
IS and I felt Ryan should have traded Garza for Soriano. We both thought that the nedd was for depth at offense and the pitchers would look a whole lot better if they got some more runs.
Well, if he would have done that, where would they be now with Radke and Liriano not pitching? Crazy season. I dont remember one quite like it.
Radke was a big part of the early season ineptitude. I wanted him traded or out of the rotation. Well, I got my wish. The problem is that he was also a huge part of the success they have had.
So now what? The inconsistent offense was always there and never would go away because Ryan didnt make a move. But that ws OK because we had pitching.
Well, the pitching is now very ordinary with those 2 guys out. Ordinary pitching and no offense is a bad combo.
Neven was a nice pickup but might be too little at this stage.
Liriano has to come back. I dont think they can do it without him unless the Sox really lay down for us.

Nevin
So Ryan finally makes a move and picks up Phil Nevin. It's doubtful he'll be this year's Don Baylor but he's not Brett Boone either. It seems like another move that packerboy has had issues with, trying to fix things on the cheap. I'm lukewarm on it, let's see what Nevin brings to the table. I wonder if this means the Twins will cut bait on Rondell White, probably not yet as they moved Shannon Stewart to the 60 day DL to make room for Nevin.
The Twins pitchers will get knocked around in New Yawk this weekend, the Yankees have a team batting average of .384, with five guys hitting over .300 and six with home runs in double figures. The Yankees pitching has been suspect, so the piranhas will need to bite back. Castillo is hurt, so Gardy had Punto lead off with Bartlett second on Thursday. As I said in earlier emails, I'd prefer to see Tyner batting second because he can put the ball in play, but it's hard to argue with Bartlett as he's hitting .342.
Which brings up Shanty's point about the hitting in the first part of the season, to which I'd argue that the pitching was so bad at that time that the hitters were pressing because they were constantly trying to come back from a deficit. Plus, Bartlett, Tyner and Punto were either in Triple A or subbing so a third of the lineup was different at that time. And yes, the White Sox have faltered, but give some credit to the Twins, it would've been real easy to pack it in after the start they had.

Will Nevin be the righthanded power bat that we have been looking for the last 3-5 years?
We don't have a DH and that's what he is, can't really argue with the trade and it seems like we gave up pretty much nothing in return. Ryan seems good at doing that, but in the past we haven't gotten much for our nothing so hopefully this one works out. What's Castillo's status? Didn't get to listen to the game yesterday cuz the Yanks were on TV which is a rarity here, but now I get them for 3 straight days.
Twins win 2 of 3 would be perfect and you can thank the Yankees for letting the Twins crawl closer to the Central division leaders. Keep it going Twins and hope can get it all put together and get that WC spot.
How nice would this lineup be?
1. Castillo
2. Stewart
3. Mauer
4. Nevin
5. Morneau
6. Cuddyer
7. Hunter
8. Punto
9. Bartlett
Not even a hole until you get to #8 and that's where you get some speed and slap hitting.

Nice to hear from you ER. Your lineup is good and it also reminds us of how the Twins really have had some bad luck with injuries this year.
Shannon Stewert could have helped this offense. He could bat .300 but most important, hit 10-12 HRS. Tyner has been great but they miss that pop that Stewart gave you on occassion.
I dont like Torii Hunter as a hitter. If I was his coach...well, one of us would have to change. But he does go on his power surges that help out, even if they are short lived. He might have also broke the 30 barrier this year but for his injuries.
If Neven hits 4 or 5 HRs for them in Sept, it will be more than we would get from Kubel and White.

Radke can't throw for 2-3 weeks (stress fracture to go along with his already partially torn labrum), Liriano isn't looking to return anytime soon. Can the Twins make it relying on the guys that will be pitching the Yankees series (Silva, Baker, Garza) to win some games behind Santana? I thought that scoring runs was going to be the problem, but it looks like keeping them from scoring is going to be the problem coming up. Hope the young guys can step it up and Silva can do what he has done in the past.

There used to be a saying in baseball "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain". Those two guys pitched a hapless Boston Braves team to the World Series in 1948, maybe the Twins need something similar with Santana and Garza as this team currently can't score or hit a lick which brings me to a Warren Spahn quote; "Hitting is timing, pitching is upsetting timing". Mark Redman sure upset that timing with his 58 mph breaking balls the other night.
It looks like the rain may move in and spare the Twins from future drubbings this weekend.

At the end of a basketball game have you ever wondered why a team that desperately needs the ball back allows the clock to tick away before they finally decide to commit the foul? I feel as if the Twins have done that in their acquistion of Phil Nevin. Packerboy and I have been pleading since July for this team to make a deal to improve their depth. Finally they have done so, but I'm wondering what took so long?
In Terry Ryan's defense, I believe he nabbed the best available from a pool of players that included Sean Casey, Matt Stairs, and Javy Lopez. I don't know what Nevin will ever do, but for me he does a lot more than the other players listed.
Nevin doesn't come without his baggage though. Nevin, who has been on 7 teams in 12 years wears the tool belt well, his $10.4 million salary says he can play but there is a reason teams don't want him to stay. If Nevin can produce though his inevitable confrontation with a middle-age autograph seeker or a member of the print media will be as inconsequential to the Twins playoff hopes as the football Gophers 44-0 win over Kent St. is to the BCS rankings. The reality is that Nevin and the Twins' relationship is not that different than a one night stand. Each party is using each for a means to the end. For the Twins it is October, for Nevin it is one more contract before the curtain falls on a career.
Go Twins.

Better late than never
Well boys, 26 games to go. Twins lead by 1/2 game.
This is really something.
The starting pitching is desimated when the #2 and #3 starters go down.
The offense goes completely in the tank.
But they still have the WC lead.
IS and I have mercilessly ripped Ryan and the offense. However, I have to admit that if they signed Babe Ruth, it probably wouldnt make much difference. He'd find some way to go into the worst slump of his career
and if not, there is nobody else on base anyway.
Good grief Charlie Brown!
But way to go Baker and Boof. As weak as they are in offnesive depth, the pitching depth is phenominal. Phenominal.
What other team could lose starters the caliber of Liriano and Radke with this type of offense and not fold like a cheap suit?
You just keep me hangin on.

Wonders never cease
And I've ripped Ryan mercilessly for not picking up a veteran arm (as did LaVelle E. Neale in Sunday's Strib, those guys really do read us don't they).
Garza looked like a rookie on Sunday but although you could argue that Baker was helped by the wind on Saturday and Bonser was facing the hapless Devil Rays yesterday they pitched well enough to pick up wins. Considering how thin the staff was, losing both Radke and Liriano should should been the death knell for this squad but they just keep us hanging on.
It sounds like Liriano might make it back before the end of the year and my dire predictions proven false, if he does it could provide a boost depending on what he can contribute. I heard someone on KFAN yesterday opining that Silva needs to go to the pen and I'd have to agree. He can get 3 or 4 innings in before he gets shelled but the Twins need at least 5 to keep from running their bullpen into the ground. I wasn't hot on the idea a month or so ago, but moving Guerrier or Eyre into the rotation would make sense considering Silva's recent performances.

Lookin good
Santana was great last night. The offense showed some signs of life but still not there.
They need to sweep the DRays today. If Silva gets rocked today by that lineup, he will be out of the rotation.
They need to sweep because the next 7 games are with Det and Oak. As of right now, this may be the most important stretch of the season. Winning 3 would be just fine.
Liriano will be back and ,as predicted, will have an impact on the WC race.
Sorry ChrisK but ,at the time, there was no need to add a pitcher. Ryan cant be ripped for not anticipating his 2 and 3 guys would go down.
If they would have added a slugger (Soriano or Lee) and picked up Nevin as IS and pboy suggested, they'd have a 3 or 4 game lead in the WC.
Even with the starting rotation hurting, it will be the inconsistent to non existent offense that will keep them out of the playoffs.
But enough of that talk. Lets go Twins.

packerboy, noone saw Liriano going down, but you could see Radke's injury problems coming a mile away. There wasn't a lot to pick from and if Silva had picked it up things wouldn't be so shaky but there's no question that a veteran arm would have helped the rotation and Ryan wasn't able to get anyone.
The hitters have been inconsistent to nonexistent at times lately but the Twins are skating on thin ice with a rotation that includes three rookies and Silva. It doesn't help the hitters when the pitchers can't keep the team in the game.
Liriano will be pitching a simulated game today, let's hope that goes well. And let's hope that Silva can turn things around with a solid start tonight. Go Twins!

How about that Johan
Santana leads the majors in ERA and wins.
Think about an AL pitcher leading the majors in ERA. Thats quite a pitcher.
Intersting that Garland of the CWS has 16 wins and an ERA of 4 something.
We have talked about the Tigers pitchers before and how they were young and they took their lumps etc... Are they running out of gas?
Do the Twins have an advantage with Boof, Baker and Graza being fresh?
Does Garza look like one of Michael Corleone's Sicilian body guards in the Godfather?
Does Boof look like a beer league softball player?
Stay tuned for the answer to these and other questions.

First and foremost, YES, yes Boof looks so busch league.
If Santana doesn't win the CY Young this year I don't know what to think. Tops the bigs in Wins, ERA, and K's. What a great year.
If the offense can reload and knock in some runs for the last 25 we might be able to make the run and hold onto the wild card lead.
Every day it looks more and more like the wild card race will boil down to the twins season ending series against the White Sox.
Morneau should be getting plenty of MVP attention the way he, and the twins have turned around. He was batting .235 with 11 HR and 38 RBI on June 8th, the day the twins started the 21 of 23 game winning streak. He's now batting .319 with 33 HRs and 115 RBI's.
GO TWINS.

Silva gets a quality outing and the Twins still can't win, the lifeless bats are really disconcerning. Since the last game of the White Sox series the Twins have scored 2 or less runs in 6 of 10 games (3, 3, 6, & 8 being the others) , that won't win many playoff games let alone series. Phil Nevin is a Brett Booneish 1 for 10.
It seems the top MVP candidates are all struggling in some way; if Santana wins the pitching equivilent of the Triple Crown while winning his final 5 starts to end with 22 he has to be given some serious MVP consideration as much as I hate pitchers being in the mix with Jeter, Ortiz and which ever of Dye and Morneau make the playoffs.

This time a year a lot of players go to lighter bats and its not because the pitchers are suddenly throwing harder. The hitting is poor but the Twins are not alone. Though the Tigers did tie the game at 4 yesterday they were pitiful for 7 2/3rds innings in going down 1,2,3 and hitting into double plays to erase the runners they did have. This is also the time of year where one guy can carry a team. Monroe seems to be that guy with his 3run homer in NY and his 2run 2out 8th inning double yesterday. Maybe Rondell can be the man for the Twins, he unlike all the other regulars should not be tired. Time on the DL is not welcome but those who have done it can be a lot fresher this time of year. Also, its not the better team that wins this time of year, rather it is the healthier team that does. As for the Sox, Thome, Podsednik, Jenks, Beuhrle, and Dye are all hurting, yes they are playing but they aren't anywhere near 100%.
Santana seems to show a pattern of getting really dominating this time of year and I believe it is because he is at his strongest while everyone's bat seems to be slowing down. Triple crown and Cy young are forthcoming.
Yes, my guy Neshek is human, bad outing from him ruins Silva's start but those are the breaks. Anyone looking for the Twins to stretch their lead and coast home are sulking this morning. Face it, this one's coming down to the last weekend.

No relief in sight
Neshek was lousy but 2 runs vs TB makes it a team loss.
Its deja vu all over again. Its been 2005 with the offense tha last 10 games. Last night was classic 2005. Give up 4 runs and its a certain loss.
I agree IS that the averages go down this time of year. Hitters get tired and pitchers are finer with their stuff. Look at Santana for example.
But this is ridiculous. Hit the ball.
Goldy, I dont think pitchers should be involved in the MVP voting (thats why we have the CY Young) but since they are, Santana would be right up there with any other player.

Nice points Shanty. I read somewhere that the banning of amphetamines this year may have an effect on some of the older players as the season winds down. When a young guy like Mauer admits to getting worn down you realize what a grind the season is.
No question that Johan has a lock on the Cy Young now, he's been the rock that the shipwrecked pitching staff has clung to for most of the season. As a pitcher he probably won't get serious discussion for MVP but he is worthy of consideration.
So Silva comes through with a good start last night and the bullpen blows up, giving up the loss. Typical. Just when you think you've got this season figured out, you find yourself flailing at a change or curve. The way things have gone so far I'm ready for anything now and I'm predicting that the season won't be decided on the last weekend, rather the Tigers will implode and be out of it by that time. It sounds crazy now but just wait, back in May the notion that the Twins would be fighting for a playoff spot sounded just as crazy.

Wild weekend
Well ChrisK, I hope you are right and that the implosion starts this weekend.
But it looks more like no one is going to collapse and no one is going to win 10 straight and Liriano will clinch the WC for our boys on the last weekend.... as predicted here.

Bert is in the doghouse
I wonder if we will see Bert again. If his suspension was extended, they must not be happy about his attitude.
I havent watched every minute of the games since Bert's potty mouth went off but they dont mention him at all. Its like he doesnt exist anymore.
Coomer seeems like a great guy but...........
Silva didnt have the stomach for it last night. I hope our boys have the stomach for the Tigers this weekend.

Bert, et al.
I didn't hear the expletives, but turned on the TV to hear Bert apologizing profusely and had to laugh because with the way he was apologizing I knew he'd accidentally said something inappropriate. The Twins web site says that he'll be back on Monday, Sep.11. My guess is that it isn't Bert they're concerned about but the FCC and they're hoping with a longer suspension they can avoid or lower possible fines.
Maybe Silva needs to start making himself sick when he pitches, he did better with an upset stomach than he did when feeling well. Usually we're the ones that have to hightail it to the bathroom to purge our stomachs after he pitches. Sorry, couldn't resist.
