Albert Lea Tribune( local paper) sports section for January 5th. The article said that the head coach Roy Nystrom warned his players about getting to many penalties and how this will hurt them in the long run, he said this to the players in the summer camp. Now I think it's time to BENCH the players that are not getting the message. Talking to them is not working.

golfreak - Rent some old NHL videos from the 1980's before the sticks slowed down the skills players; before what is interference was allowed; before people with less skill were allowed to hold, clutch, and grab and then come back here and tell us all what the game is about. The 1990's NHL ruined hockey. The ZEBRAS ruined by letting people play too much then the coaches started teaching their players to block forwards from moving to open ice when they did not have the puck, the stickes went horizontal, defensemen were allowed to pin for 5-10 seconds (that is holding you realize right?), and the game bogged down. Please note: neutral zone trap/left wing lock. They would have never been invented had the refs done their job 12-15 year ago!
Yes, the refs are calling some lame penalties, but if we allow them a few years to re-teach us what the game is supposed to be about and get rid of the holding, clutching, grabbing, interefernce, and obstruction, it will be a better game.
The same thing happened in the NBA. Now you can watch 'real men do battle' by dribbling for 15 seconds and then trying to beat their man for a dunk. SNOOZE!

The pissing match continues. Who cares. Albert Lea has to worry about getting past West in the Sections. Roy Nystrom is a very good coach with an impeccable record and his teams play with a passion and no I am not from AL, but I agree with Bugsy that this pissing match between the AL folks should be settled out by the woodshed between Zamboni and whoever wants to show up
SEMINNHOCKEYNUT. Thank You. "Well Said". It's time to teach the kids the new style and system of hockey as we know it today. The skilled players and teams will move on and the cheap teams and players will FADE AWAY. I have seen stats of teams that only have about 4 to 6 penalties a game for both teams per game, not 10 to 15 like you see in southern minnesota hockey. I know alot of refs that would love to ref games and have no penalties to call.

Nystrom BENCHED his best defenseman against Faribault for undisciplined play. He missed the last 10 minutes of the game, and A.L. still mounted a comeback.
You would have known this had you been at the game.

You are starting to sound kind of like John Kerry. First you say that Roy Nystrom needs to learn how to coach, now you are "flip flopping" saying that he is a great coach. I just don't get it.
I don't mind the new rules. The only thing is that the NHL and colleges can do it much easier. They have a limited amount of refs to show what the new "standard of play" is. In high school and even youth, there is virtually an infinite number of refs to teach. Just today, i witnessed a game that must've had 50+ penalties, the next one, less than 15. There is just so much variance between each and every one.
Minnesota hockey needs to get every one of the coaches, and every one of the refs together under one roof and explain what is going to be called and what isn't going to be called.
Every game a team plays in they need to adjust their play. It's unfair for the players, coaches, and even the refs who get criticized.

GOLFREAK.
1. I have never said Roy Nystrom was a bad coach. I think he is just another good coach in the state of minnesota. What I said was some people in Albert Lea think he's a HOCKEY GOD. What I also said, if a team is out of control on penalties and taking alot of stupid penalties then the coach needs to take control of the team. Yes, teams will get penalties but are they hard working ones or stupid ones.
2. All refs will never be the same. If the refs are calling the game tight then realize this in the first period and adjust to how there calling the game it's that simple. Example = I was refing a "A" Bantam game albert lea vs. Austin a few years ago and Austin was doing alot of stick work above the Albert Lea players waist and around there head. This started in the first part of the game, so I cracked down on the highsticking and called it on Austin twice. As I skated by the Austin bench I heard the Austin head coach say to his players " keep your sticks down he's calling it." I did'nt have a problem with them the rest of the game. As a ref you must set the rules in the first period. As a player you must adjust your game according to the rules. AS a coach you must have control of your team. Have your team go to the USA HOCKEY WEB SITE AND WATCH THE NEW RULES VIDEO ON THE NEW RULES AND HOW THERE GOING TO BE CALLED.
3. Penalties are part of the game and every team is going to get some. But why 10 to 15 per game? It's not just the refs.

waseca
Worthington 6, Waseca 4
St. Peter/LeSueur 7, Fairmont 1
Disappointing game for Waseca after knocking off East on Thursday. Worthington earned it. The game was tied 4-4 after two, but Worthington had better legs in the third and closed it out. Nice win for the Trojans on the road.

predictions
West 8 East 1
AL-9 Autsin-2
AL-9 Autsin-2
East-West could get ugly in a number of ways. Emotions usually run high on both sides in these games
East will really need to stay out of the box if they have any chance to hang with West.
West cannot overlook East since we all know that these games usually end up closer than they look on paper.
West 7-2

BUGSY. The same is true for the Albert Lea vs. Austin game tonight. This game always get's ugly because of bad blood between both teams. They better oil up the hinges on the pealty box for both sides. We all know that Albert Lea should spank Austin this year, unless the new coach for Austin has worked hard on his power play unit and can take advantage of the power play and find a way to win. Drop the puck and sharpen the pencil and let the GOON HOCKEY begin. And to both teams , don't forget the purpose of the game tonight is to put the puck in the net.
