Lourdes vs Northfield
Lourdes was left for dead twice in the third period
ANC came back both times. These kids must have nine lives. Have come back
Against Mankato west, and others I'm sure in the third period.
When will all nine lives get used up? At state again or were they used up at semifinal Saturday?

Spiess (West goalie) was the only Scarlett that showed up for the first 2 periods, New Prague was in control but couldn't score. The start of the third the Trojans had a parade to the penalty box, some caused because West finally showed up but others were head scratchers, not questionable calls but questionable plays by New Prague. The time out confused me in a 0-0 game. Bisak played well, aside from his stupid penalty, and deserved better. Spiess won the game for West with his play early on.
If the West team that played the third period plays all 3 West will beat Lourdes, Lourdes D and goaltending isn't as good as New Pragues, if the West team that played the first two periods shows up again Lourdes will roll as they'll bury they're chances, where NP didn't.

Attended both Section 1A games yesterday
Northfield outplayed Lourdes in the first 2 1/3 periods, but at the end Northfield could not match up to Lourdes lines. If Northfield could have played only 5 kids the last 10 minutes of the game it would have been a different outcome. Congrats to Lourdes
Note: Lourdes student's section was a disgrace to their school. Very classless and disrespectful. Even some of the Lourdes parents were commenting, hopefully someone in that school system changes the poor sportmanship culture.
New Prague lost the game because of taken unwise penalities, which affected the goalie. He completely lost his composure and focus. West was consistent in their play focused and composed. Wests goalie won that the game for them.
Lourdes will beat West for the Section Championship 4-2. Good luck to both teams

Outstanding hard fought game by both teams. Hockeyking, you must have missed the first period where SOGs were 15-3 or something like that in Lourdes' favor.....Northfield played a high paced physical game and nearly stole one. Great, great effort.
Student section boo'ing was pretty bad and the Lourdes faculty should give them a talking to; rather disappointed in the turnout of both student sections....the caliber of the game deserved far better
Pretty much a Lourdes rube, but MW has to be the favorite...long stretches of quiet and sudden 4-5 goal runs can destroy the psyche of the other team. Irrespective of Weds outcome, MW's looking like the 2014 fav.

A good goalie coming in with the core of leading scorers also returning. Should be a more disiplined team next year!! I'd call it up for grabs between the two programs. An opposing player was smacked in front of them and was hurt pretty bad, and they stood up and cheered , beat on the glass and laughed at him. I think this is a annual event in that arena!!

Not sure what game you were watching but the puck was in Northfield zone ENTIRE first period (14-4 in shots)
Northfield took advantage of 2 PP goals and a quick goal off a dump into the zone within 1st 5 of the second
Some back and forth rest of second and early third, then LHS took over
I don't know how you can claim Northfield dominated for 2.5 periods--maybe 1 period total...and thats stretching it
As far as the LHS students--right pretty classless, probably safe to say they won't get the sportsmanship award this year.
Also-nice band support for Lourdes too
What happened to band support?

The shots on goal statisic is not a good barometer on how a team is playing. Many teams use the strategy of allowing non-quality shots to reach the goal. Which I would say out of the 14 shoots that period 4 of them were of quality the rest were dumps or soft shots. Northfield scored very quickly putting a quality Lourdes team on their heals, all good teams take advantage of PP and all good teams defend against PP goals. My point on 2 1/3 periods was my take on Northfields constant pressure in Lourdes zone and the physical play. We all see the games differently. I believe the better overall skilled team won that game in the end. Not the hardest working team.
The Lourdes student section classless actions were a disgrace to the host city of Rochester and whole Lourdes school system. Rochester should lose hosting the section 1AA and 1A section games for such poor sportsmanship by a host city team.

I have heard mention of this Century movement a couple times. I first heard it at the Mayo - Century Quarterfinal game... A couple Century hockey parent friends mentioned that Century's enrollment has dipped below the AA level...
That could mean all their sports could drop in Class level...
Just what I heard...
Sorry, back to the thread topic...
Lourdes had trouble for 2 periods against Le Seuer in Quarters, then Northfield played a wail of a game against them in Semis, my hunch is that Lourdes will have trouble against a better team than Northfield in Mankato West...
West wins 5-3
I had already posted this on the Section 1A Final thread, but for conversation sake and keeping things together I'll copy it onto this thread as well.
I REALLY wish I could get back down to see this game... I think this has the potential to be one of the best finals this year, and in years (for this section).
I have seen Lourdes play this year, and as it has been touched on prior their D and goaltending seems to be the issue. I think Northfield exposed that a bit in the semifinal. Burkel, the Lourdes goaltender, is shaky at the beginning of the game and settles down as things progress. The Eagles D can be driven and it has been an issue. They are beaten easily by speed.
As for West, they can not afford another slow start like they had against New Prague. If West is to win, they need to come out fast; the Scarlet's will lose if they have another lackadaisical effort to begin the session.
I would say the game comes down to a few factors:
1. Physical Presence: West will need to play a gritty game to slow down Funk and Samuelson.
2. The First Goal: The problem teams have had with Lourdes in the past is they get up by a couple and lock down for the remainder of the game. If West scores first, it keeps them off that style of play.
3. Goaltending: Whatever goalie settles and plays his game will likely lead his team to St. Paul.
4. Limiting First-Line Scoring: Whether it be Lourdes or West who does this, it will be a key in this match-up. Lately Lourdes has been getting more contribution from their supporting cast which is a plus for them. As has West. Whichever team slows the first line has the edge.
5. Defensive Play: "Offense sells tickets, defense wins the championship." Great team defense will bring one of these teams out and onto the X.
As for predictions, I think West will bring their A-game. I expect Samuelson and Funk to show up as well. That being said -
Mankato West Scarlets over Rochester Lourdes Eagles: 4-2
West jumps out with the early lead and pulls the upset.
Send the Scarlet to the X, and send the Purple home (along with their super-fan...)

Couple of comments:
1. Lourdes scored first
2. Is a good barometer Time of possession in zone? How many times a team hits the post (3 v 1)---those don't show up on stats either, but LHS did hit pipe or xbar at least 3x...
At any rate it is a mute point, and i don't disagree with you regarding the student section--it was an embarrassment
As far as Wed night goes, I have no prediction, but agree with Roy1 that it will be a great game and that:
1. Whoever can shut down opposing line
2. Whichever goalie settles in faster...
will win.

I'm looking forward to tonight's game as well. I think it will be a very close game. I don't foresee either team coming out slow in the Section Final. Both teams will be ready to win.
Both teams can score and seem to have one really strong line but I think the deciding factor in the game is going to come down to which team can settle their nerves the fastest and how the goaltenders play.
My prediction is Lourdes over Mankato West 3-2 because they've played in this situation before a couple of times.

OK, enough already! I was at the game and seated directly opposite the Lourdes student section:
--Lourdes students were boo'ing when Northfield took the ice, VERY inappropriate and disappointing...
--the rest of it was pretty pedestrian boorish student behavior seen at any number of sporting events be they football, basketball, whatever across the state, especially in rivalry games
--sad to say it is mimicry of the broadcast behavior of the college sports, especially basketball
Your last sentence sums up the goal of your thread.
Good to see students show up for games, but the boo'ing is not right.

Everyone seems to want to dismiss the West no show vs. NP
Been wanting to see West all year and drove down to Roch just to see them.
Take out the 6 minutes in the third where NP fell apart and that was 45 minutes of bad HS hockey by West.
The antics of West's coach was worth the drive, should they pull it off I wonder if he will act that way when they are getting smoked by Hermantown or STA on TV?
Great goaltending saved the day as can often happen in sections.
Lourdes 6 - 1

After two periods of play, Lourdes is on its way to another Section Championship. It was 3-0 after 2 periods and Lourdes was dominating. Shots were 20-10 after 2 in Lourdes favor.
There were a couple of close call opportunities for Mankato West but it was more of Lourdes mishandling the puck than anything else that resulted in the shots.
The Mankato West goalie had played well after two periods. It could have been 5 or 6 to zero after two periods. Lourdes hit two crossbars and the goalie came up big for Mankato West.
Now it's time to go to state and represent the South better than it has been represented for the past couple of seasons.
