3-0 after 2. Shots on the board say 22-22
The period started off pretty even, even though Bville scored so quick, but the 2nd half of the period was dominated by te blaze.
STAY had some looks but their shots have been right in te chest. They didn't test Lee like the blaze have to Kelly. It helps that the Blaze D are playing very well, especially since sawchuck might be the only one you have heard of.
The first goal came from Otto. I missed the start of the play, but somehow Ahcan received a pass and had a wide open net right in the slot. The puck kind of got caught around his feet and hia shot was awkward and wide. Otto picked up the puck and while Kelly was picking himself up from his sprawl, Otto put in a backhander easily.
Wagner scored to make it 2-0 midway through. On a faceoff to te right of Kelly, Wagner got the lose puck off the draw and shot it five hole. He was on the left walk and shot it on the right side of the circle. So somebody missed picking him up off the draw.
Borchardt made it 3-0 on the pp when e danced through the Sta players. He got to the slot, where the puck could have been easily swiped away, he practically left it, but te STA defender went for the body and missed. Borchardt then went short side, low to the blocker for the goal.
The blaze PP looked good, a little stationary, but they are crowding the front of the net. They got 3 pp chances that period. The 2nd one is where they gained a lot of momentum and it should be thanks to Otto. An StA player took a couple of punches at a blaze guy and Otto grabbed the blaze player so he couldn't retaliate. While he held him back the sta guy got a few more shots in and the blaze went to the PP.
That powerplay generated a ton of chances, and though they didn't score, I think it was a big turning point. During that moment they were showing who te better team was. Not too long after they got another pp and try scored on that one.

So again, final was 7-1 for Burnsville. Shots also favored the Blaze 36-29, so the cadets had 16 in the first, 13 the rest of the game, while the Blaze put 29 shots on the net in the final two periods.
The Cadets were the better team in the first, the only problem, they never scored. After that, I am not sure I can explain the drop off other then Burnsville wanted it more. I mean, the Blaze were clearly the better team, and I think I should apologize to them. After the first I said their depth drops off after the first line. I take that back now, they might not have a guy that is as talented as the depth players on STA, but the kids knew how to play and they really knew how to work. Comparable to the Blaine depth players, but probably even a step past them. They played three lines of forward the whole game, and just stuck to their system. Besides the depth players, the line of Ahcan, Otto and Borchardt was the best line in the game and for the last two periods they just wore STA down.
I thought the best player for STA was a 10th grader named Homes. He played D with Smallidge, but he made some nice stops defensively.
The third period started out weird when Kelly was pulled. I am not sure why, he gave up three goals, but none were really his fault. Bville had 3 pp and 15 shots in the period where all the goals were scored. To me the only reason to pull a goalie is he is playing bad, or you want to give the other kid a chance to play in the last game of the year. It just does not make sense to throw in a cold goalie when your defense is giving up tons of looks.
So yeah, 40 seconds in Osland shoots from the point and Achan tips it to make it 4-0. At this point it is over. I don't see any way they are coming back.
At this point STA showed very little urgency, they just wanted to check everyone. The blaze weren't interested in any of that, they had a mission to accomplish. The one exception was when Achan got sick of the cadets and hip checked Matsui and then delivered the biggest hit of the game to Jerry who is listed 6'3 to Achan's 5'7 perhaps.
Borchardt made it 5-0, an awkward backhander from behind the line after some pressure which bounced off capezza's pad into the net.
The cadets made it 5-1 pretty late in the game, Hockey hub said Shorgen got it, but I though Matsui tipped it. Regardless, it was a shot from the point that found its way through traffic. At this point the Blaze fans were already telling the cadets to warm the bus.
Larsen made it 6-1 on a 2 on 1 with a nice pass from Borchardt. The Cadets gave up a lot of odd man rushes in the final period, probably them trying to take some chances, but you didn;t really see anything pay off from it.
Borchardt scored to make it 7-1 and got the hattrick. The play was set up by Achan who showed just total grit and heart as he fought off a cadet through the entire neutral zone and poked it over to Borchardt while being dragged down. It was the epitome of the Blaze's effort all night.
I am happy the Blaze won tonight, after all the years being paired up with the hornets it is nice to see them finally make it. And if the program is in as much trouble as people say, this should be a nice little prize for the community and old school hockey fans. They won't be the favorite in the first round, but they are a gritty team that could create fits. I will be rooting for them.

I'd be referring to losing to Mahtomedi in '09 and '10 as well.Cadets16 wrote:Not true...The Cadets went to state last year, lost in the finals the year before, and won a state tournament the previous three years before that.SFA1992 wrote:Hope you're wrong on that one! It'll be a good game regardless. I'm excited to see if this younger core at STA can get the job done. STA also has put up some pretty poor results in section finals in recent years. Good luck
Of the last 5 section finals, they've won 4 (their only loss to an Eagan team who did surprisingly well at State).
Congrats to Burnsville. Very disappointed it wasn't close, best of luck at the X.
Excited to see what STA can do next season. The young components of this team will make for a lot of exciting viewing and they've certainly learned a lesson tonight. Thanks to Billy Jerry and congrats on a great career, a lot of people are very proud of him. Green, thanks for the write up.
Disappointed that STA didn't make it back to state but the writing was kind of on the wall throughout the season, just not as good as years past. From what I can gather, this is a young STA squad? They should be just fine.
Congrats and good luck to Burnsville, good to see a classic program revisited.
