The ice will be fine. St. Paul is using a refrigerated ice system.

If they can have an outdoor game in California in 50-60 degree weather, I would bet that 35 degrees shouldn't be a huge problem.

How about the last three or four years. There has been temps that were a little above that and they had all sorts of issues with the ice!

As long as temps do not exceed the forecasted mid-30's, with a good refrigeration system the ice should be fine this time of year. On the other hand if the event was held in March on a bright sunny day the ice would be very soft and probably unplayable.

So I should keep my plans to attend with no concerns about ice effecting game play? Really want to see sta vs HM. But they also play in feb indoors and on good ice.

Sounds like it is supposed to be cloudy, so the sun should not be a factor. The past years did not have refrigerated ice like this year.

This. If the NHL can host an outdoor game with refrigerated ice in sunny California at a 63 degree air temp at game time, it's not going to be an issue at 36 Saturday. As other have said, the past HDM games were on natural ice, which is entirely different.

Sounds like in this article this the teams may be using Chinook Helicopters as locker rooms! Won't be quite as posh as STA's Cessna fleet,   , but the cool factor is way higher.

They can always take the fleet on a victory lap after the W. ( disclaimer; STA is my team of choice, if that was not already known through my notes to Peckyman and defense of the squad).

Nice connection with Military Theme and Donohue.

This could be a little distracting for the goalies!

"Hockey Day 2015 will take place on a fully active airfield with Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters and cargo jets surrounding the ice and various aircraft taking off, landing and taxiing behind it."

Got no issues with the activity that will take place around the rink - part of the deal of linking it with the military and hosting it at an airfield. I do have a lot issues with the boys games, as being a long-time (now frustrated) supporter of northern hockey, I could not care less with the STA/HM or Luverne/SPJ tilts. I'll wait till the Gophers play to start paying attention tomorrow.

However, good luck to all involved.

Ouch mouth. HDMN is great (IMO) no matter WHO is playing. Newer program vs one of the oldest in MN? A huge metro match? Why NOT? If you love hockey, you can't be negative about Hockey Day! Support these kids who are no doubt thrilled to be involved. Wish I could be there. Oh, and I am from northern MN too.

Can't believe the 3A faithful (ie Luverne lovers and haters) have not torn you up yet?! Brace yourself mouth, it is coming.......
I guess I really just love hockey in all formats and think HDMN is a great combination of the state and sport that I have loved since I was a kid. In northern MN!
PS. I won't dispute that the smaller northern programs with a couple notable exceptions sometimes get overlooked. As do the outstaters from every direction.

Venue looks good, it is out in the open though for possible wind factor. Is the host the city of St Paul?

I'm guessing they're hoping it makes money.

Really? Only one kid from Northn MN on the Gophers. They should certainly have more, with the coaches roots but you might want to wait to start watching the Gophers considering they are 97 percent non 218ers.
