The kinder, gentler Brainerd Worriors will not be a factor in Section 8AA this year!TheHockeyDJ wrote:Who do you think will win 8AA this year? Brainerd has a new coach, but do they have enough talent to compete with Moorhead and Roseau?

Smart to have options, something 7AA should have in place if there was a all South final and then they could still draw big crowds.TheHockeyDJ wrote:Was surprised to find out if it is Bemidji/Moorhead they'll play in St. Cloud. Spoke with a gal at the mini Ralph in TRF and she said they'll only get the final if Roseau is involved. Something that is new for 8AA and she was aware BJI/MRD played there about 5 years ago.
Let's not get carried away. An all south final in 7AA? Has that ever happened?alcloseshaver wrote:Smart to have options, something 7AA should have in place if there was a all South final and then they could still draw big crowds.TheHockeyDJ wrote:Was surprised to find out if it is Bemidji/Moorhead they'll play in St. Cloud. I doubt it, but there are more southern teams than northern. Could move ER to 8AA next year.Traxler wrote:Let's not get carried away. An all south final in 7AA? Good idea! It does seem like the MSHSL wants to eliminate as many non-metro teams from the tournament as possible by placing metro teams in out-state sections (1, 7,alcloseshaver wrote:I doubt it, but there are more southern teams than northern. If you consider Elk River "metro", the Elks were in Section 8 for awhile in the 90's and had some good section battles with Moorhead.Traxler wrote:Good idea! I didn't know that. I see that Elk River lost to Duluth East 7-1 in the 7AA Section Final in 1998. I know that Alexandria is the only team other than Moorhead and Roseau to go to the tournament from 8AA, so I didn't know Elk River was ever in 8AA. Was it back in the single class glory days?gitter wrote:If you consider Elk River "metro", the Elks were in Section 8 for awhile in the 90's and had some good section battles with Moorhead.Traxler wrote:Good idea! And yes, I consider all those fringe suburbs "metro."

According to this site: http://www.minnhock.com/state-tournament-1990.htmalcloseshaver wrote:The first year ER went to State they were in a metro section 1993? then were in 8AA and lost an epic 4 OT game to the Spuds in the final. Elk River came out of Section 4 in 1993 and Section 7 in 1999.

Section 8AA for a few years then.Traxler wrote:According to this site: http://www.minnhock.com/state-tournament-1990.htmalcloseshaver wrote:The first year ER went to State they were in a metro section 1993? then were in 8AA and lost an epic 4 OT game to the Spuds in the final. Looks like 1994-1997 they were in Section 8.alcloseshaver wrote:Section 8AA for a few years then.Traxler wrote:According to this site: http://www.minnhock.com/state-tournament-1990.htmalcloseshaver wrote:The first year ER went to State they were in a metro section 1993? then were in 8AA and lost an epic 4 OT game to the Spuds in the final. 1994: Section Final - Lost 4-3 in 4OT's to Moorhead
1995: Section Final - Lost 7-4 to Moorhead
1996: Section Final - Lost 3-1 to Alexandria
1997: Section Semis - Lost to Bemidji 4-2
The National Hockey Center hasn't treated them any better than the DECC/Amsoil.
Elk River is not in 8AA.
8 AA is about Moorhead, Roseau and some one else thrown in.
This year it is Bemidji.
Sometime in the future I would think Aus would have Brainerd in the mix.
Forecasting an Elk River move to 8AA is not to likely.
More likely Thief River Falls moving up as the city is doing very well economically and as housing is added the population will grow. The hockey will get better based off an already good youth program.
River Lakes and Monticello will get stronger as their youth programs grow and will have a three year group of talent at some point and put together a run.
St. Cloud Tech should put together a team, but I have been thinking that for years.
Buffalo will end up in another section if/when TRF or Warroad move up or Alex.

If you look at the schools around +/- 100 kids from AA enrollment cutoff of 1251:elliott70 wrote:Elk River is not in 8AA.

*Rogers, Chaska, Northfield, New Prague, Mahtomedi, Spring Lake Park, St. Thomas, St. Louis Park, and Waconia are all growing.
*I'd think Kennedy and Sibley are losing enrollment.
*Century and Tech are in multi high school districts so their enrollment shouldn't vary too much.
*Monticello, Park Center, and Harding are all in co-ops.
The unfortunate part is, and this is what happened to 1AA, eventually the enrollment trends make what were AA schools become A schools and the sections get even more of a metro balance. It wasn't that long ago Lakeville was 1 school and Austin, Faribault, and Winona were AA schools. Now we have 2 Lakeville schools and Farmington grew at faster pace than those former 1AA teams so what was once 1 metro school and 8 non metro schools has become 3 metro and 5 non metro schools.
The schools on the low AA side are now Owatonna, Cambridge, Moorhead, and John Marshall, all outstate schools. (the next are Hastings and Mayo, it's not until Tartan at 1438 that you come to a non co-op metro school.). If it were the old days when you were in a section and the sections didn't have to be numerically balanced I'd agree with you but its not.
