What about Richfield, are they still around? Never a regular contender but did produce Damien Rhodes and Darby Hendrickson...

lol okay...maybe you don't follow the classic suburban conference, but Richfield is still around somehow. They play SSP, tartan, st. thomas, and hill every year. They even upset Hill a season or two ago. They finish ahead of Simley and Sibley every year despite the lack of youth numbers feeding the team. I think their youth association has had to combine with someone at certain levels...maybe Washburn?

I might be wrong but I think that Hallock is basically Kittson County Central HS now. The team is also named that, but they've co-oped with other schools. They do pretty well for themselves in 8A.

I found out that Golden Valley HS merged with Lindbergh in 1980 and then Lindbergh merged with Eisenhower in 1983.

Hallock/Kittson Central is indeed still playing. Despite low numbers they continue on.

Reading minnhock's state tournement history, I notice the school, Alexander Ramsey.
Morris and Benson co-op now.
I once played a team from Ortonville Minnesota in youth hockey.
Long Prarie Co-oped with Sauk Centre.
Pequote Lakes and Crosby Ironton Aitkin used to be seperate.
None of these teams draw any interest, but give them respect for trying.

Yeah I guess I just overlooked them, you never hear anything about them at all, I mean I think Simley and Sibley get more press ... lol

It is sad how things change, but that's life, the only thing that is constant is change! In the early '70s, there were 573 high schools in Minnesota, only about 100 had hockey, what are the numbers now? The hockey players are just growing up in different places.

The numbers are: 499 high schools, 158 boys hockey teams from 274 schools.

Not only do I miss the great school teams from Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the real history of high school hockey, the rivalries between West and Southwest, Cowboys and Indians! Roosevelt and Washburn, Henry and Edison. The gallant efforts of weaker teams from Vocational, Marshall-University and North, and the early success of South. Of course the great Saint Paul teams. I also miss some of the old venues too, with the dark stands, lights only over the ice, the nostalgic feel. I am glad they went away from fencing to plexiglass, although it did keep the pucks down since there were no face masks!

I know Warroad used to play the Mesabi East Giants to start their season in the late 90s, are they still around? I played in Indus in youth hockey, always a treat for the parents Im sure to see their little peanuts zipping around in the below zero temps, then cramming into the warming house!

the Montgomery Redbirds had their own program starting in the mid- to late-70s. In the late 80s they joined with New Prague, and that lasted until about two or three years ago. After a year or two without high school hockey, they joined forced with St. Peter and Le Sueur last season.

Post by F14 »

If you want to see some Minneapolis High School Hockey History,

Make your way down to PARADE ICE GARDEN - MAIN RINK

Stories and yearbook photos from the 40's - 90's up on the WALL from the following schools:

Mpls West, Vocational, Central, Marshall and Marshall-University, (ALL CLOSED)

Mpls Henry, North, Southwest (including 1970 title team stuff), Washburn, South, Roosevelt, and Edison

Plan on spending an hour reading if you are a real history buff!

Good Stuff

Great post. I was talking to a hockey dad over the weekend at the U16 Tournament we were at and the discussion of hits from behind came up. He grew up on the iron range and stated that he remembered the first year they were required to wear facemasks the sticks and the elbows seemed to come up the same season.

Regarding the great old St Paul programs that are now struggling, I feel the same way. Our A bantam team beat Como something like 11-0 last year and I sat there feeling bad for most of the game. They used to be a great program that would have given anyone a battle. My good friend at work had all his kids play at Como and he said that pretty much any time a good, solid player emerges he leaves and goes to Roseville or Hill Murray or somewhere other than Como HS.

St Paul Johnson now an A hockey school, just sad.

Mpls West cowboys and Mpls Central Pioneers, I knew many of those players. I grew up with them and played against them in High school.

It is sad to see, but we will more than likely see some others fall this way soon. Not sure how long Kennedy is around. Unless there is a drastic change I do not see Richfield around for much longer and probably St. Louis Park.
First ring suburbs, except Edina, seem to be falling to the economics of the times.
It will be sad when Richfield end. My kids are Richfield students and alumni and even though I am a Holy Angels supporter I am also a Spartan parent and supporter.

Minneapolis West High School...Coach Jim Baxter...Playing in the Minneapolis arena. What a blast!

The old Minneapolis Arena was located on Dupont and Lagoon. What a great place to play hockey! No plexiglass...chicken wire. Wooden stands were built right above the locker rooms and the chants of the fans was all you could hear at times. The stamping of feet and screams of COWBOYS - COWBOYS - worked you into a frenzy before you hit the ice. What fond memories.

Good thread. Thanks!

I just looked up Lagoon X Dupont on www.historicaerials.com, it's on there.

Click on 1957 and the big old barn is sitting there.

That is one of my favorite websites now.

Mesabi East Giants were formed out of co-op between Aurora-Hoyt Lakes-Biwabik-Palo. They just built a new school in Aurora a year or two back. There use to be seven schools in the combined districts...now down to K-12 in one building. The hockey team no longer exists.

The times have certainly changed. I grew up on the Iron Range in the prime of the hockey boom. Friday and Saturday nights used to bring out 4-5-6,000 crazy screaming hockey fans to the local arenas. Hibbing vs Grand Rapids....A-HL vs Int'l Falls....Greenway vs Grand Rapids....Eveleth vs Virginia....Babbitt vs Ely. It was Standing Room Only!!! The entire communites came together to cheer on their teams. I'm sure the same can be said about some of the old rivalries around the rest of the state as well.

Now, you can here echos at some of the games.... parents and grandparents only.

Although you can argue that the caliber of hockey has increased in certain areas (now with year-round ice and summer leagues), as a whole, I believe that it has dropped dramatically. I miss the "heydays" of hockey.

There was also John Marshall high. I think it is a magnet school now. If I'm right about this, the building is south of I-94 and one block west of Dale St. on Holly Ave. The school was only open for a short while. I read in a newspaper archive that the mascot was the Greyhounds.

More mascots:

Wilson -- Don't know
Mechanic Arts -- Trainers (?)
Washington -- Prexies (strange name IMO)
Monroe -- Green Wave
Murray -- Pilots (?)

I love history stuff, if you couldn't tell already.
