I was at the game and the refs were fine. BSM lost the game because after their 2-0 lead they played more like individuals and thought they could go through the motions and win. If they played 10 games BSM would win 8. I've seen most AA games and feel the refs have been very good

Give NM the credit they deserve. #20 is a great player, their goalie was fantastic and the rest of the girls played with heart and worked their butts off.

BSM IS A GREAT TEAM AND DIDN'T PLAY THEIR BEST.........

NM PROBABLY PLAYED THEIR BEST GAME OF THE SEASON........

NM WON

This question is probably not in the right topic but...where did those Brooklyn Park players go from last year?? They had a full JV and Varsity team. How about Osseo? They had a full team last year as well. Where did those players go? That is the issue here as I see it.

Anyway, if NM wins tonight-I think we should all have our Pasta Feeds at the Olive Garden in Maple Grove-saw 'em there on Friday!

Awesome job by the Ponies CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE #1!!!

This team proved to all the people that said THE PONIES could not win with out Chelsey Jones!!!

North Metro great job on the ice. But your fans need to class it up alot. The signs that were displayed early in the game was extremely tacky and disgusting!!! That is embarassing to the entire state of hockey.

Take the best players from 4 or 5 schools and combine for a team that could possibly win the state championship. Just a disgrace and no one yet has been able to answer me how this happened? How they can form for just one team. Unbelievable.
I talked to some peope down there...they said the breakdown is something like this...

Park Center-3
Brooklyn Center-3
Osseo-6
Fridley-1
Brooklyn Park 7

There goalie is an 8th grader, Cinderella story.
Dont make me laugh. Whats the combined population of those 5 "small towns" about 400,000 people??? Not to mention one of those programs just won a state title on their own not too long ago. A total sham. Go Ponies.
A few comments on the quoted posts... First, just to clarify, Brooklyn Park does not have its own high school. Rather, kids from BP are split up amongst 4 schools: Park Center, Osseo, Champlin Park (Anoka back in the day), and Cooper. This always killed the Park Center boys H.S. program, since it didn't have its own youth program, and BP's program was based on city, rather than school boundaries. Many of the best players ended up at Osseo and Anoka, in addition to the players coming up through those youth programs. In any event, Columbia Heights is the 5th H.S. in the co-op, for what it is worth.

More importantly, do you people who are slamming NM for its co-op status have any idea of the demographics in these schools? We are not talking about 5 wealthy, state-of-the-art high schools here. In fact, Brooklyn Center is one of, if not THE smallest school district in the metro area, and will likely be forced to merge with another district soon, as it is heavily populated by low income families and retirees, and cannot get much needed funds through referendum. Columbia Heights and Fridley both have small enrollments as well.

Here are the statistics for % of students at each of the 5 schools who receive free & reduced price lunches, the typical measurement of how many low income families attend:

Osseo: 24%
Park Center: 41%
Fridley: 36%
Columbia Heights: 48%
Brooklyn Center: 64%

Hockey is an expensive sport, and these schools just do not have the resources to field teams on their own anymore. If you look at the NM boys' team, they went 0-16 in the NW Suburban this year. Obviously the combination didn't help too much there! I don't care what the naysayers say in response, to me this is a cinderella story, even though the clock struck midnight one game too early.

Carry on with your regularly scheduled programming...

Agreed - but - I also must say that I heard that the Big 9 Confrence forced that adjustment of Rochester alignment? Not the MSHSL??? Can anyone speak to this as I'm not recalling the facts...

Congratulations to the Stars and Ponies for such an exciting championship game. But why were the EP girls interviewed and congratulated for showing support to the other schools, that's what athletes with character do, you support the sport in spite of how you're school finished. EP lost, didn't go to STATE - no need to show highlights of their season - get over it! There were 8 teams in the AA section, but EP got more press time than most of the schools that actually made it! Explain that!

Another thing I want to say is...NOT ONE of those schools could have fielded it's own team this year.

My guess is that lots of press was done on EP with the streak, etc. and of course there is always the liklihood that they will be at a tourney but then don't make it due to upset.

Congratulaions to the Ponies for winning Again and Again!!!

Congratulations to North Metro for runner up!

Nobody cares about demographics, school lunches, % of kids from anyone school, number of transfers to one school or the other.

The topic is HOCKEY and what does it mean to the kids playing, the coaches and the parents.

On February 24, 2007.
Stillwater and North Metro played in the biggest game of the year for a high school girl hockey player. Both TEAMS showed up to play and they gave us a great hockey game to watch.

And guess what no matter who the TEAMS are next year it will be another great game.

Well said hockeyfan#4 !!!

Congratulations to all the girls, coaches, and fans !!! What a great experience for the 16 teams. I sincerely hope that we continue to get new teams to this tournament so that more and more kids can experience the thrill of playing at the X, and spending a few days in St Paul with their buds.
I was at most of the games this weekend, and IMO the overall play continues to improve every year. STW and Roseville had an incredible pace, especially in the 3rd period !! I thought it was so classy when NWMetro celebrated their runner-up trophy with their fans after the championship game... those kids played hard and should be proud to be runner up.
As for the Ponies... A great end to a very fun season. This team overcame the loss of Jones and Zilles, and proved to the hockey community that they had the talent and work ethic to go all the way. It was a complete team effort, and they should be proud to be called Champions !!!

This is how I saw it too, as did a number of other observers present. BSM simply did not take NMS as a threat.

As for the championship pair, Stillwater was outstanding and has a great future ahead as they are still a fairly young team. They were underrated all year. NMS had excellent senior players and a young goalie who caught fire. Both teams rose to the challenge at the right time. On paper there were certainly teams that were just as good, or even better, both in the tournament and watching in the stands, but on the days they needed to be the best, these teams were. The fact they weren't ranked all that highly shows there's a lot of talent in girls high school hockey and a lot more parity than most people thought. What a difference a year makes when no one could stop EP, to a real dogfight this year. I, for one, hope it stays this competitive.
