To clarify, this list is for kids who played MSHSL varsity hockey in 2013-2014, are eligible to play MSHSL varsity hockey in 2014-2015, but have chosen to play elsewhere instead. Most of the kids on your list left prior to the start of the 2013 season or have never played MSHSL varsity hockey.

The major exception (and I should probably point this out on my list) are the Achiever Academy kids, who I believe are all playing AAA this season.

Maybe half, several are playing Jr A's 20U, 18U or 16U somewhere else this year. I think whether they actually played in or could play in MSHSL as varsity is really symantics. By creating or expanding your list to include kids who choose to go play UST1 or some other league, and totally opt-out of MSHSL is painting the whole picture of what you are trying to portray by having your list in the first place. Seems to me that one of the unintended out-comes of this list of kids is showing a trend that the MSHSL is (fast or slowly .. take your pick) simply becoming a two to three year stepping stone for many kids before they go on to play Jr A's to prepare for college hockey (Club, D3 & D1) or have their sights on a Pro league of some level. Example of this would be, Kevin Wolf ('96) from St Paul who probablly never appeared on your past lists. Kevin would have played on alot of MSHSL varsity teams as early as a freshman, but instead chose to play T1 at Chicago Fury 16U for 2 years and then 20U at Seatle (WHL) for 2 more years.

Thanks for your input, but I'm portraying exactly what I intend to portray. Feel free to create your own list with your own criteria.

ok fair enough, so the kid has had to play last year (2013-14) on a MSHSL varsity team, and has (2014-15) MSHSL eligblity this year to be included. Then add these kids ...

I added all the AA kids with a single notation. How do you know Adam Maxfield is leaving Austin?

Adam played in a couple of Jr Showcases with my kid, got to know him in St. Louis at the Casper Coyotes/El Paso Rhinos showcase. Adam is a very talented '96 and spending another year at Austin HS at his level of play would be much less than optimal and he and his family are aware of it. He'll find a way onto either a NAHL team or somewhere else for sure.

Anybody keeping track of the kids returning to a high school program? Is the count based only on gross exists or do you consider players returning. LN goalie is a +1 and I think there maybe 2 others on Elite D rosters that were posted (1 for sure that is now going to try some cake). Look forward to the fall season to get rolling since that leads to November.

You've got about 17 on your list as of the State Fair start, how many last year at this time?

Do you foresee any possible/likely Elite League selects bailing out before the first practice at Blaine in a week?

How do you view the 24 AA kids, to make things apples and apples with your last years final count of about 40 ?

The AA count is a tough one. Most of those kids could transfer to a public/private and play in the MSHSL this season. Not one of them have chosen that route so should each kid count as "leaving" the MSHSL? I don't know. Technically....yes but AA's team dissolved.

Add
Cameron Madrid to Bauer-Emerson U18 (not El Paso)
Travis Marsh-AA/Burnsville to Bauer-Emerson U18
Victor Morgan-SSP to ???
Larry Jungwirth-Bl. Jefferson/Shattuck to Waterloo USHL
Zach Lambrect-(sp?) Chisago Lakes to Bauer-Emerson U18

Followup Questions for Exiled One:

Did all 24 kids transfer into AA right from an MSHSL school or affiliated Bantam program , or did any have a year in between the transfer to AA ( for whatever reason)?

When you say" most AA departs"would have been eligible to still play MSHSL this year, do you have that exact number?

( I suppose that might be the number to consider adding in for comparability, if you had a mind to do so since its your list.)

Otherwise, the list seemingly is going to drop to around 20/low 20s this year, down from 40 a year ago. Seems a bit abrupt all at once.

But, maybe the " top star" skater talent level might be down a bit. By contrast the "star" goalie Early Departs is way up. Maybe some more kids decided to stay with MSHSL senior year, for the many reasons many people have been stating in various threads over the years. No direct knowledge, but for example kids like Malmquist, Muehlbauer, Peterson, Versich.

Also, perhaps more Bantams are enrolling directly to SSM and therefore never become an Early Depart from MSHSL hockey. Has the ratio of SSM in state Minnesota freshman enrollees been rising in recent years, does anyone have that figure?

Madrid isn't from MN. He was one of the 9 kids that were moved off the team at the end of the year for being ineligible. I had heard Marsh was heading back to B'ville, but must have made the switch to U18.

Is there a U18/U16 roster for B-E anywhere?

No official roster as of yet. I just have the scouting info on many of these kids. Not sure why Madrid was pulled, shows that he transferred for the start 9th grade, info on Marsh says B/E U18 for this year.

I know B/E is playing in the NAPHL/NAHL showcase in late September at the Super Rink so a roster should be out soon.

I think because his parents didn't live here (Madrid). All the out of state kids were pulled because they weren't living with their parents, staying with oher families, etc

Sounds like a comparable number to last years 40 might be in the range of 30, by the time you add in "comparable " AA kids and allowing for some more early departs before regular season begins.

Sorry, I've been off the grid for a while.

I put him on the list. Please let me know if you find out where he lands.

I'm not too worried about the count. For me, it more about keeping track of Minnesota kids after they leave the MSHSL system. Nice to see some flowing back though.
WestMetro wrote:You've got about 17 on your list as of the State Fair start, how many last year at this time?
Not sure. Less, I think.
WestMetro wrote:Do you foresee any possible/likely Elite League selects bailing out before the first practice at Blaine in a week?
A couple of USHL rostered players maybe, but my guess is none.
WestMetro wrote:How do you view the 24 AA kids, to make things apples and apples with your last years final count of about 40 ?
Again, not too worried about the count, but I'm just going to leave the AA players as an asterisk.
oldschoolpuckster wrote:Zach Lambrect-(sp?) Chisago Lakes to Bauer-Emerson U18
Added. The rest are included with the AA asterisk.

No idea.

Kobe Roth and Nicholas Swaney were both on the initial Elite League rosters, but they are also both listed on USHL rosters. It's unlikely that they'll be playing Elite League. Either they are doing "before & after" or they are gone. I'm listing them as gone unless I hear otherwise.

I'm wondering that myself. I'm going to list him for now.

Also, Lincoln's roster is missing.

That's to bad about Roth, if true. I'd be surprised if so; with him and Bethune back, Warroad would have a good shot.

We may not know until 9/22 - the deadline for USHL teams to get down to 23 players on their protected lists.

In prior years, teams had to cut down to 25 players by 9/1, and then to 23 before the start of the regular season.

On the NAHL protected lists, I count 41 MN players who played high school hockey here last season (not counting SSM kids). How does that number compare to other years?
