Re: Ms. Hockey
Icallthem -- Good points. SSP will be very good defensively. Both Robertson and Stohr will be top tier D. Robertson is the protype physical, strong D who has the right demeanor and attitude. Strong shot, strong defender, and not afraid to mix it up. Stohr, you are right, is underrated. She has made teriffic strides from her 1st year as a freshman, til last year (Jr). A perfect compliment to Robertson as she is more fluid and agile, moves the puck VERY well and sees the ice well. Not as physical as Robertson (but few are) but hardly ever gets beat either and has shown some tenaciousness. Has a very good understanding of the game also.

A player to watch also is Rita Simones. She has a chance to be a very good D in next year or 2. She improved dramatically last year and may do the same this year as she has oodles of athletic ability. Ton of potential.

Defensive D
Icallthemasiseethem, Good point about watching the defensemen to fully appreciate their game. To get a better impression of how well they play defense, it helps to see them play against a good offensive team. Otherwise, if you watch the SSP kids against a weaker team, mostly you see them hold the puck in the attacking zone and not have to do that much in their own end.

When you see a team play against one of the top offensive players in the state, many times you can learn who the coach believes is the top defender on the team, because she will usually be out most of the time against the other team's star.

Re: Ms. Hockey
mnhockeygal,

Thanks, I never meant to leave out Robertson or the fact that a good defender needs to be strong with a good shot and can mix it up.
SSP had great forwards that it was easy to leave out these defenders. I think SSPs forwards could get their job done because of their defenders doing their job. This takes a good coach to keep everybody happy and knowing their roll and how important it was to play their position.

I would go along with ghs idea of Ms. Forward, Ms. Defense and Ms. Goalie if we truly could pick a true defender, otherwise its all about points. I don't mind a defender scoring but, nothing makes me more mad then, when a great pass could have been made to a forward and a defender is rushing the puck for that all important point. A defender needs to be able to get the job done without the glory that a goalie or a forward would get.

I wish hockeyhead would make up a list of his top defenders.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... seethem at: 9/6/05 10:44 am

Re: Ms. Hockey
How much scoring is done in transition!!! It all starts with the first pass out of the zone. The really good teams, who score a lot on transition, almost always have people who can make that initial break out pass. My ranking order of importance for a D

1. Can see the ice and make the intitial breakout pass.
2. Can defend one on one and think defense first.
3. Will play physical and ruthless in front of the net.
4. Accurate shooter who keeps puck on the ice for rebounds.

These to me are far more important than points and goals.

No question those that fit the bill deserve more recognition than they currently receive due to the "shadow" of the top offensive players. I have a feeling though that for consideration among the Ms. Hockey nominees you're always going to have to be an offensive type D...or in other words, probably have to have 15-20 goals & 40 + points...perhaps unfortunately.

Edit: An additional reason for this (potentially) being you're always likely to have a few D who have these kinds of offensive numbers...so I think it stands to reason that they will be the D getting the attention & potential Ms. Hockey nomination among all defenders.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 9/6/05 10:20 am

The decisions made in this setting by D can be critical to the sucess of a team. The best teams play exceptionally well in the O & D Zone, but usually just as well in the Neutral zone. Own the Neutral Zone and make wise decisions there and you'll find you're far less in the D & far more in the O zones as a result. You'll also catch many other slower/weaker teams in transition and unprepared, flatfooted, on ill timed line changes, etc.

SSP does a great job of this. AHA is fun to watch too. It's no coincidence that both won state championships last year.

Also, I believe that Jackie Robertson of SSP meets every one of the criteria that we just discussed about quality D - and it comes as no surprise that she's headed D1 as a result.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
This was a fairly widely agreed upon list way back in July. I'm posting in part to bump the thread up and see if there may be any updated thoughts on the subject or possible revisions in anyone's mind at this extremely early point in time.

Pre-Season Top 10 Ms. Hockey Finalists (in no particular order)

Jones....Stillwater
Thunstrom....NSP
Lee....Wayzata
Pezon....EP
Buganski.....Anoka
Frakie.....SLP
Maunu....Cloquet
Roberts....Warroad
B. Re: Ms Hockey list
Question relating to award criteria or parameters...how big of an influence is a players overall HS career vs. her senior season only...in the minds of fans? Or, is, and / or how much is a players entire career weighed in the decision vs. only the senior season...in the minds of fans?

Re: Ms Hockey list
Great question. I think that this award looks at the career as much as anything, not just the last year alone.

Totino's #10
Saw Totino at early scrimmages; #10 was a real stand-out. Without much help, she moved the puck and created multiple scoring chances.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
When I first saw Tiff play for Walser last year, I didn't think she was all that great. Boy was I wrong!

What happened was that every time I saw her she impressed me more and more. She's easily one of the top players in the state. She's not given enough credit though.

Great kid, very hardworking, extremely talented. Wherever this kid ends up will be a very lucky program.

Seems Tiff had a good game last night despite her team coming up short:

HOCKEY • GIRLS

METROPOLITAN AREA

• Anoka 5, Wayzata 4

Wayzata 1 2 1-4

Anoka 2 1 2-5

First: Ano-Lundy (Lorch, Lindberg), 1:20; Ano-Stetson (Lunde, S. Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
Many would say that this player has a good shot at Ms. Hockey as well. Best explained in the words of someone who just saw her play recently:

Quote:
Pezon is gonna be a top 5 for ms hockey for sure. She is so good. Last night she scored a goal where the puck was going in the zone and the goalie came skating out to cover it and pezon dove and tipped the puck straight past the goalie into the net. And her breakaways are unreal.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
I'd agree Ms. Pezon is a lock for a spot among the 5 finalists. Certainly backing that up with her start. Very strong candidate if career "history" figures into the decision too.

Kinda brings me back to my earlier question and wondering if a current senior emerges with a truly outstanding season while not having been as "high profile" as an underclassman...do they have a realistic shot at the award ? Prolly not much evidence to prove, disprove or answer the question since to my knowledge, all previous winners were big / impact type performers throughout their HS careers.

I'm asking this because another poster mentioned a particular player currently playing very well and having a major impact in her senior season when she didn't really have that noticeable or "high profile" presence in her previous seasons...and regarding her legitimacy as a potential candidate.

I'm guessing it would be extremely difficult for such a player to have much chance among the current stellar group of candidates. End musings.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
Are girls that play club hockey or prep school hockey eligible for this list?

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
No. mshsl players only. I believe? club players like T-Breds or Shattuck are not part of the high school league.
