I seriously doubt this thread will last long (unless you-know-who makes an appearance)... 1980 U.S. olympic hockey.

Moving on...

Kind of rendered a 53 page thread moot. I see why your still "upset".

It was the first time ANY D1 AA team beat a RANKED D1 A team. And they beat the #5 team in the nation...pretty big upset.

No joke - ESPN carried Nate's hot dog eating contest and the american beat the 10 time winner from Japan and the idiot color guy states that it would go down as one of the greatest sporting upsets in US history.

spewed beer through my nose when I heard it and then quickly turned the channel becasue I was embarrassed I had actually watched it

Another sad one to remember, can't remember the year but the Russian basketball team getting extra chances to hand the USA team their first basketball loss to get the gold medal at the Olympics.

I refuse to let a hockey game be the biggest upset, goaltending plays too big a factor. Same with baseball and a pitcher. In those sports 1 guy can make too big of a difference.

Dan Gable never lost a match in 3 years at Waterloo West; 64-0, at Iowa State he amassed 99 wins and 2 National Championships - freshmen were ineligible then. As a Junior 137lb he went 31-0 winning by fall 27 times, as a 142lb Senior he went 33-0 winning 31 by fall before losing to Larry Owings in the NCAA championship match. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDhH4aTWi-M

I agree goldy, if its one game.

But how about the '69 Mets beating the Orioles in the World Series?

As far s the 1980 game vs the Russians, I think it was an upset but not as big as its made out to be.

Larry Owings is no Appalacian St

Post by Knowlzee »

I don't know if any NCAA championship match is an upset, Owings was 32-2 on the year, he was a pretty good wrestler, too. What a wonderful wrestling match.

Gable looked tired at the beginning,.....and frustrated at the end. Gable tried everything he had in the middle of the match,....and Owings refused to give in. A great performance, by a kid who probably had no idea, what he actually achieved. What a great story for the grandkids.

Practically impossible to keep the intensity to go undefeated in a year, much less a college career. Gable was a great one.

1 problem I have with all those upsets, they all happend in either championship or medal round games and it gives the opponent little credit for being there. Just to get there the team or individual had to be very good, you can't luck your way through an entire season or tournament.

So how about this one: Man-O-War was 21 for 21, 21 starts 21 wins before he was beaten by a 100-1 longshot named......Upset.

Its a good point goldy. The '69 Mets won 100 games and were the National League champs.

The "Miracle" team of 1980 was coming off a number of impressive wins including a thrashing of the Czechs before it beat the Russians.
Nobody beat the USA at Lake Placid so it wasnt like the Russians were their only win.

Some of these "greatest upsets" are a creature of hype to some degree.

But here is the biggest upset in the history of the known world:
Jesse "The Body" Ventura being elected the Governor of Minnesota.

How in the Boof did that happen?

And speaking of politics, maybe Lee's favorite political party will nominate Hilary for President and she will win. Talk about being upset.
