Ok, here we go once again...

Let me just tell you my perspective on this! First of all remember that the state tourny really begins at sectionals... every team gets in! Secondly 16 teams... I just think its to much! I think keeping it 8 really showcases the tourney! I think that leaving people wanting more is what makes the hockey tourney one of the greatest in the country!

-The SLinger

State Tourney

Post by hockey81 »

I also agree that the state tournament should be 16 teams instead of 8. That way more teams would have a chance to make it to state.

Why don't we let everyteam make it every year then no ones feelings get hurt.

I think you can guess my opinion on this subject

I would even like it to go back to a one class tournament.
Let's find out who the best is once and for all

no way...keep it at 8!!!!!

The way the tourney is set up now is perfect. I love playoff games at Hibbing and the DECC. If 16 teams made it to state it just wouldn't be as special. It would take away from the fun and intensity of the Section playoffs. In sections you generally have 2 games your team has a tough battle to make it to state. It just builds up to the state tourney, I love it.

The only way to go to 16 is scrap the A - AA format and get some kind of a super 16. 8 is plenty with two classes, creates great section tension.

Mr. Cloquet Fan, I think your going to find that 8 is plenty from most people! Its really simple... if you wanna play at the big show... you better have the team that will get you in the door!

-The SLinger

Yup, I was right. I looked it up.

There are 16 teams in the state tournament.

8 in Class A, which starts on Wednesday and goes through Sat afternoon and 8 in class AA which starts on Thursday afternoon and ends Sat night.

Hmm, I knew there was something about the suggestion to go to 16 that I thought was kinda odd.

I think the state tournement should go to 4 teams in class a and 4 in aa, ......................

actually I think that pagestat should have its own renegade championship and award a trophy to its own champion.............................

then Lets play hockey would do the same and three different teams, ( possibly) could win a state tournemtn.....or how about this: lets have ten classes so that every team with half a brain could get in and any team who could play would have a championship..........

sorry, 8 and 8 is fine, my main grype is with section alignments or the lack thereof by the mshsl............

The fact is: Everybody is in the state tournament. No team is excluded.

Its just that only 8 teams from each class get to play at the X.

No matter how inadequate we might think it is....how many times does the best team not win it?

Better yet....we know that the best team always has a chance to win it. What else matters?

Who cares if the 12th best team in the state makes it out of a weak section instead of the 8th best out of a stronger section?

It doesnt make any difference. All you gotta do is win.

Compromise 16 teams one class.
I don't think anything you do to the tournament will ruin it. It will just make it different. but I gaurantee you the games will be just as intense and the desire to get there will remain just as strong. Keeping it the same will not hurt it either.

I dont disagree with your sugestion.

But I doubt Hutchinson, Sauk Rapids, Fergus Falls, Virginia ,Wadena , Farmington etc. etc. would consider it a compromise.

while a single class 16 team tourney would be great, you would have to completely re-do the sections, you would end up with some absolutely undeserving teams making it to state and getting absolutely destroyed by a powerhouse, it would be embaressing, and pointless. At the same time if you evened out the sections, then there would be less of an importance on sections all together, and the same teams would make it year after year, the system now may not work absolutely perfectly, but i must agree that the truly better teams seem to always emerge, so its working, and at the same time while not every team may make it to state and get the chance to play at the X, thats life, if ur good enough go to a better school, and hope you picked the right team...

How about this scenario........

Sections and Class remain as it is today. Have coaches (or whoever) rank the eight teams in each class so you have a seed 1 to seed 8 in each class.

State tourney would be the sixteen section winners in a single tournament.

Seed 1 in Class A plays Seed 8 in AA
Seed 2 in Class A plays Seed 7 in AA
etc., etc.

Have to agree with ER. Hockey starts pushing for 16 in each class, and all of a sudden your playing the first game on a Monday or Tuesday at some high school rink, and the loser goes home (note basketball brackets). So much for a trip to State.

The slinger has it right. If it ain't broke don't fix it or try and fix it. Let the teams play as is and the best team will come out on top. The whole playoff idea is stupid. Why don't we just have a BCS type format? Have the top 8 in the computer rankings go to state. Playoffs make absolutely no sense we should trust the computers to determine the state qualifiers. Look at how successful college football is and i've never heard anyone complain about the BCS.

state

Post by oldschool »

I have a new plan: Take the Class a state champion, the class aa state champion, the Wisconsin state champion and the North Dakota state champion and play a "Upper Midwest" championship, we all argue over who's better anyway, and the ND youth champs have won the usa hockey regional.....................you could rotate between the x-cell, the ralph and the whatever it is that the badgers play in.....................
