Well, its a tough question but I think since nobody else wears one, I wouldnt either. It would be hard to go against the grain ,so to speak, and wear one.

I would go with the visor to protect the eyes though.

I think the tougher question is: A1 or Ketchup?

All the burger faces might think you're a weiner if ya wear one.I think the cages came out when i was a 2nd year bantam, previous to that I had more black eyes than Scott Ledoux but never a cut.The stitches were at least twice a year FROM the cage messin up my chin.I'd go with the half shield if I was in the game today....Oakley of course

Check out this week's Sports Illustrated; one of the photo pages at the beginning of the magazine is a collage of bleeding, shredded hockey faces.

At that level players learn to keep thier sticks and elbows down(for the most part). This can be seen very well in the USHL, the guys who wear the full masks are the ones who get the elbows to the face and the highsticks. Players respect the fact that your exposing your face and try to keep thier sticks down.

On another note, personally, I would wear the half shield...

Well synergy44,

In high school I wore this little sort of cage that just covered my mouth to protect my flashy smile. It was made of some sort of hardened plastic I think.

Then after that I went without a helmet for a season and got lucky but saw a lot of choice cuts appear on many a league members faces.

Lots of missing teeth too.

That was back when hooking was a penalty instead of its current form of hitch hiking.

The hip check was legal. Most of the good shooters kept their slapshots about six inches off the ice or less.

Often one would chase the puck with your stick on the ice in one hand depending on whether you were a lefty or shot right handed. Not any more!

After a long stint in Hollywood I came back to the state and the game and noticed the new style of 'stickwork' and bought a cage and sure enough that cage saved me a dozen times at least from false teeth and a bunch of stitches while guys all around me were getting carved up like thanksgiving turkey on a regular basis.

The cage can be annoying cause it screws up your over all vision if you're not used to it but it's a lot cheaper than the dentist or the ER.

I tried the other full shield but it fogged up once in a while so I chucked it.

The way the game is played today I think to go without a cage or at least a half shield is senseless unless you were already born with a "HAMBURGER FACE" in which case a few more scars might add character to your on ice charisma.

If I was playing in the NHL today I would combine a chain link type of mask like the old knights wore during the crusades with Kareem Abdul Jabbar type goggles with tinted lenses on them and that same old external mouth guard that they don't manufacture any more that I had in my high school days.

timmyo is right about the sports illustrated exhibit A of current "HAMBURGER FACES" that used to be fairly handsome individuals.

I don't see where my 'custom made face protection' would look any more ridiculous then they look on the page that timmyo referred to.

Should the NFL go back to helmets without face masks?

The technology is there to protect your face and it's pretty lame to not take advantage of it.

How many kids would you be planning to have if your wife
was missing half of her teeth and her face was blown out like Joe Frazier's was after too many rounds with ALI every other week or so?

Of course, you could always adopt! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

L<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /alien.gif ALT="0]"> E, SL<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> PSH<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> TER.

(...a legend in his <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> wn mind...)

slaps,

in high school i almost lost an eye from playing hockey. someone broke their stick in half over my eye. i had to lay flat in a hospital bed with patches over both eyes for a week straight. luckily i retained my sight but with some difficulties. what i couldn't retain was my ability to play a couple sports that i loved because of this accident. i essentially lost a good potential for a free education as well. if i could do it again i would gladly take a football helmet onto the ice with me...

Half Sheild

Post by bisketboy »

I was involved in a Senoir Tourney in Moorhead last weekend and a guy I play with caught a one timer right between the eyes. The irony is that he just had taken his Half Sheild off.I play without now but it has made me kind of rethink things. Teeth you can replace eyes you can't. Half sheild is the way to go. Slappy, my Freshman year I can remember wearing the plastic mouth sheild you mentioned. Oh the good old days.

I wear a half shield in senior league but it has nothing to do with guys being hacks (although there are a few out there). Some guys play for fun but aren't very good skaters so they'll lose their balance and launch a pretty good tomahawk at head level on accident. My shield has saved my eyes so many times i've lost count.

At the top levels people can argue that skilled players keep their sticks down so you shouldn't need a cage or shield. At the recreation level that's not the case.

Studies

Post by juniorhockey »

It seems obvious, but at the rink in Rochester down in the hallway leading to the locker rooms, there is a large study down by a doctor from the Mayo clinic. He helps out with the Junior b team there and does pretty much all of the national team trips, or at least used to. He put together a study showing how much more a full shield protects your face compared to half shields and no protection at all. If your ever in the rink, I suggest checking it out. The gist of it goes as logic would assume. Nearly no injuries with full shield, some with half shield, more then some with no protection. But I think we already knew that.

The interesting fact is that the half-shield actually tricks your brain into thinking there is protection on your entire face, thus eliminating the 'flinch factor'. Thought hat was interesting.

valuable study

Post by packerboy »

I wonder how much money was spent on that study.

Say, how about this. Lets do a study on whether shin pads prevent injuries to the legs. We will have some of the guys wear one, some wear none and some wear two. We could do it over 4-5 years at a cost of say................a billion dolars!

Cupped

Post by Chieftan »

shooter, funny but not funny. Last year I had a kid skate out to the point and block a shot at point blank range that caught him directly in the package. He got up and skated to the bench ( I don't know how) and just about passed out. His face was as pale as i've ever seen on a living body. I quickly found out he never wore a cup. I about passed out myself with the thought of the pain this player must've been going through. Needless to say he didn't return to that game.

Ooooh, that's gotta hurt!

My Face is My Mask

Post by Gumper »

My namesake, Gump Worsley, wouldn't tolerate any of this talk about face masks - or even helmets. He might go along with the shin pads and cups though.

This conversation reminds me of my days as a HS goalie. I went through 4 of the Protec goalie masks in one season. Twice I had pucks stuck in the eye openings. Guess I gotta be thankful that someone was smart enough to make me wear a mask.

Slapshooter, you brought back a good story....Somewhere someone knows what it is like to punch a cage.....

Back in my old Austin Maverick days, the USHL, nobody wore anything to protect their face. One game a deflected shot came up and plunked me square in the left eye socket (Slappy, I too remember when shots never came up over the knees) I went down in a heap and found out the next day I had 3 broken orbital bones. The next week I was playing with a full cage so as the bones would heal without more trauma. We were down in Sioux City playing a couple of games, we won the first and were well on our way to winning the second when it got ugly. A guy does the old "Slapshot" routine on me and drops the gloves prior to a face-off, I turn and look at him like he is crazy, I have 3 broken bones and was wearing a cage, what the heck was I going to do? He mouths off about me being a so and so, I should probably have a dress on, then pops me square in the mask. The old masks had these big holes in them, big enough so that part of is fist was stuck in it when my head turned. So now this poor SOB had his hand broken and stuck in my mask. The most one sided fight I had ever been in. He couldn't do anything but get pounded. The poor refs trying to break it up couldn't because his hand was still caught in my cage. They kept yelling at him to "Let it go". In the end I had to take my helmet off and send it with him down the tunnel. His hands and face were both a mess, I was unscathed. I don't remember him playing again that year, hard to play with a cast<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Like an idiot, as soon as I could I took that cage off and went back to playing without it. I was lucky and never took another shot to my eye again, but to this day I wear glasses because of that errant puck. Now, even in Senior league, I wear a shield, generally I am the only one, but whenever anyone asks, I still have the scar to show where they cut me to put the bones back in place. You never know where a puck will end up, I never expected to get hit, but I did.

BTW, I think the study referred to was actually about concussions, but veered into the facial injuries. Something about whether a full cage with chin cup helps reduce, or increases concussions.
