Kennedy ends their program with a 13-1 loss. Thanks for the memories (particularly of the 1980s), Kennedy.

Oit with a whimper. That '87 team was really something.

I assume they will join a co-op? I thought I read somewhere that players would effectively join the Bloomington Jefferson team.
They do have that 1987 championship, and no one can take that away.
I guess I'm less sentimental about this than others may be. Fortunes rise and fall, and the reality was always going to be that certain teams may not survive forever. For every Bloomington Kennedy, there is a Champlin Park, Rogers or Andover that takes it's place (all programs that I don't think existed when I was in high school in the 90s). What I'd be interested in knowing is - and I'm guessing the collective board braintrust could answer this - how many MN high school hockey programs there have been each year, total. Call me crazy, but I'd put money on there being a heck of a lot more teams now than there was 40 years ago. Prove me wrong on that. So it's not like MN hockey is contracting. My guess is it's actually expanding. For the true cities and inner ring suburbs, yeah, they may need to co-op to survive. Thats not a bad thing. I root for Minneapolis to do well in class A. You never know, Kennedy may rise from the ashes again someday....

It is contracting and has been for over a decade. Here are the # of teams, by year

2024-25: 143
2025-26: 142? (Kennedy out, don't know of any new ones)
I'd have to do some research to see how many teams have dropped due to either co-oping with other schools or simply going away.

I've been proven wrong! My wife would love you.
Although I would be curious about the co-op situation. If you consider a co-op a single team, then yes, I can understand the contraction. If I recall correctly, North St. Paul and Tartan co-op? So thats one team that used to be two....but I guess I think of that as a bit of a gray area when thinking about the total number of teams. Maybe a better way to look at it would be the number of high schools participating in varsity hockey.....

Maybe Minneapolis is a better example. I believe they co-op all MPLS public high schools, which is something north of 5 or 6. I don't know if all those high schools once had their own varsity team - I'm guessing not. But I know some did - Edison, Roosevelt, Washburn - maybe more? So again, probably splitting hairs, but those schools still have a team of sorts.

Here is a good source of teams past and present:
https://leepagen.com/teams.htm
In many cases, a team's details shows when they disbanded, whom the co-opted with, etc. Both Mpls and St Paul had a lot at one time. Heck, even Duluth had five (East, Central, Denfeld, Morgan Park and Cathedral/Marshall) Used to really like going to see Morgan Park play. They had the cutest cheerleaders

Brad Shelstadt (sp) was awesome. I am good friends with a guy married to a cheer leader on that team.
Tom Chorske would later become a Minnesota Hockey Icon in the future.

Anyone not a senior can play for Jefferson next season. Not sure going forward if there will be an official co-op or if kids will have to enroll at Jefferson to play.
As far as naming, by reading the tea leaves, I think the Kennedy name is dead for now from the hockey program and it will be the Jefferson name that carries on for Bloomington hockey.

If you had money.
We were ok - used a gas generator when we needed light.
Neighbors house burned down from all the candles.
We loved going to school - electricity and heat. And a hot meal at noon.
