The general process is what, probably about 40 skater spots and a handful of goalies out of this tryout pool?

From 2017 website post regarding tryouts on UMWHSEL:
"....During the summer, approximately 100 players are chosen from the prospect list to be brought in for a final evaluation, which consists of several hour-long games played in one day. These games are watched – and players evaluated – by a group of about 20 coaches and scouts. Enough players are chosen from this evaluation to provide the 40 or so spots needed to fill out the 120 spots on Elite League rosters."

Over the umpteen years I’ve attended HSEL games - they never fail to amaze me with their final tryout list and how so many “should be” locks have to tryout. And knowing many “locks” won’t make it due to whatever politics goes on in the background.

There’s a ton imo.

Kids from Marshall are competing for spots with kids from Northern Lakes, Hill Murray, and Stillwater?

Kids from Owatonna compete with kids from Elk River, Andover, and North Branch?

Just admit politics matter, geography doesn’t.

There's politics in everything in life, little doubt about that. Who do you feel are the programs that benefit most and those that are negatively impacted the most by these politics?

I want to see the best kids (no matter the age). So freshmen that played high school hockey to seniors. They are all game to me.

I won’t call (or would ever) call out non-deserving kids by name. However there was some questionable goalies there last year and some very notable ones missing. As a former goalie who also coaches the position as a side gig - last year was just disappointing. Then to see the current list of players - Jackson Blake has to try out? The kid was rock solid before making 5 Nations. A couple worthy goalies with great past seasons having to tryout.

Tyler Braccini is catching up to his brother, maybe even surpassing him. Watch him make Team CCM this year

I’m very curious to see the misses this year.

There are absolutely some on this list who should have been on teams already like Jackson Blake and Max Burkholder (when was the last time a Bantam Player of the Year had to tryout for elite league? I know YHH’s selection has nothing to do with EL team placement, but typically the top couple Bantams from the season before are auto-bids into a team).

Also a few names on this list who I obviously won’t say but absolutely have no business being there compared with some snubs from the list... assuming those snubs are not already on a roster I suppose. I understand the desire to spread the spots around geographically and to include smaller schools, but like 612 said, they should be looking for the best players regardless of age or geography. There are enough tier 1, HP, etc opportunities for the selection committee to determine whether a just above average player on a big school is better or worse than a phenom for a small school that plays poor competition during the HS season.

Stramel presumably flew home from 15s Nat Camp today, so available for tryouts Sunday to be a rare 9th grade Eliter

From my fairly limited previous viewing, he should make it. Though I would say as an incoming 9th grader that a tryout, even if a formality, is probably best.

I was fairly critical of Travis Allen (just a solid career at Centennial), Joe Daninger, and Boynton not making it when Haider made it as a sophomore (I’ll concede I was wrong on that one), but still they deserved spots over some of the other goalies who made it the last few years.

Get rid of the geographic bs and create more even teams. Have a North team if need be for travel purposes. Eliminate the Team CCM concept. Play like 6 games? Lame. Just my two cents.

62 , Haven’t seen Stramel myself since a year ago , but many people recently seem to say he is better prepared for Elite success than Nick Pierre was last year at this time .

(Although , Pierre and others had better NatCamp stats than Stramel did, including 9th grader Clark who didn’t get a tryout offer

They don’t even follow the geography really as it is besides north and kind of GP. Just end the facade and move on.

The guys responsible for evaluating the section 5AA goalies are apparently stringent graders

I've heard rumors of Team CCM becoming a "real team" in the league this year?

Any kid not from Lakeville North or Rochester Lourdes in 1AA or 1A.

I really like how they have formated this, for the most part. It seems as if the cities teams have all been mashed together. The Plains and North teams seem to have outline's to an extent, but I feel that may be more for ride-sharing and hotels.

A few surprises from the "North" team this year, GR has 7 kids, Cloquet has 4, Hermantown and DE and Eveleth each have 2, and DD has 1. A spattering of great plains kids as I feel that the northern Section & guys aren't as popular this year. 5 EGF, and a St. Cloud Tech make up the rest of the roster.

On the "Great Plains" side a few guys from NoDak, and Mack Motzko is listed as "Minnetonka". He fits with the other SCC kids, which there are quite a few.

Only 1 freshman on the list, Charlie Stramel from Rosemount should make it interesting, while there is 55% Seniors, 32% Juniors, and 12% Sophomores. Stramel makes up the remaining 1%.

A bit surprised to see a Hopkins rep on the list, Zach Hayes, buts he's a Junior who got the majority of the starts last year for Hopkins. Not that great of numbers, but they are still in the lake. Hopefully getting some better D in front of him should help him out over the course of the EL season.

Some good netminders in that group but I think overall the group is weaker than in years past. I'm kind of surprised Houg from Edina didn't make it considering all of the hype...did he not tryout?

And beyond that surprised to see Edina with only 2 players total.
