For a sport that rarely plays Monday games...why so many today, and so few tomorrow? Make-up games from weather-related postponements?

I believe it has something to do with precinct caucuses in those communities.

Interesting game tonight between Bemidji and Grand Rapids, with Fitzgerald and Holum being two of the top goalies in the state, in fact could make a case that they ARE the two best goalies in the state

Just a couple years ago these teams were facing each other at State. Now they are bottom 6-8 seeds in their own sections, but it should be a good match-up. It can be an interesting cycle for smaller opt-ups in AA. Definitely a great goalie duel.

Good perspective Goose!

I have every confidence both teams will be back to the X before you know it!

Elliott, please give us the names of the next two Bemidji goalies in a long line of them who are top five in the state? What secret ingredient do you put in the goalie camp water up there?

Our defense system is so weak the goalies go through youth hockey seeing hundreds of shots.

Just kidding, of course.
I think the secret is three fold.
The coaches work to develop goalies, the association offers off season programs geared at goalies, and everyone has the opportunity to try playing goalie.

Mix in the tradition and the work ethic of the kids and you get sound, good or great tenders.

Rebeskie
and
Kopisky

Are two coming up that if they put the work in could get there.

They are bantams.
There is a JV kid that should be good but I don't remember the name.

Surprised this wasn’t in the pick em challenge. East would have gotten 95% of the votes

Correct... State law prohibits public schools from scheduling activities on precinct caucus night. Treated the same as election night.

That was certainly one of the stranger evenings of hockey we’ve seen in a while.
CEC knocking off East
STMA skunking Maple Grove
Rapids handling Bemidji fairly easily
And even New Prague defeating Mound Westonka

For as dominant as this East team can be at times, they are certainly prone to coughing up a hairball every so often. Granted, we are talking about high school kids playing hockey, who are going to have off nights, but these lapses could come back to bite a team that really should roll over opposition like CEC despite the rivalry factor.

You can bet Randolph will say something similar at practice today. Also, Jacks netminder Carlson played fabulously last night, especially in periods 1 & 2 when the Hounds could’ve been up by 4 or 5 goals. Nothing like a hot goalie to swing the tide . . .

Hermantown 5
Superior 2

Watkins had 2 shorthanded goals in this penalty filled game. The second one happened with just over 2 minutes left while Superior was on the power play and also pulled it's goalie. Watkins whacked the puck while centering the face-off from deep in his own end into the empty net. I have never seen that before.

Watkins has 6 SH goals on the season and the Hawks as a team have 13 while giving up 9 power play goals.

Congrats to CEC!

One of the best hockey games of the year anywhere!

And section 7 hockey is the best!

Thanks to Kniven for the YouTube Hilites!

Heritage said 1200 attendance, looked like more than that. Wonder if any in line were turned away?

I avoided Monday since most people are used to having to get their picks in by Tuesday. If it were later in the week, I probably would've picked it, especially since it's a relatively thin week for big AA games.

Watkins has pretty much been the reason the Hawks have stayed on top of Single A. He had a hat trick against Greenway that included a shorty and an empty netter. Heck of a player.
