The Hawks have already lost 3 games this year. Offense is scoring but the defense looks a little suspect(judging by the scores). Is this just early season jitters or is this a warning sign that perhaps the Hawks dominace has left them and a gradual decline is beginning?

It's going to be a real treat to watch those teams play running time games in the State tourney some day.

They've played a strong schedule. This is what it would face as a AA team, if they ever were to make that jump.

Don't worry, once the playoffs start they'll get to step back down to a full-time A schedule and sanity will return to the Hawk Dome. There's a method to the "play AA all through youth levels and HS regular season" madness. They're just building up frustration so that they can take it out on small community teams come playoff time.

There certainly is some sweet irony to Hermantown not being able to beat Marshall last night because a good chunk of the Marshall talent left Hermantown after bantams. Had those players stayed, Hermantown would likely be undefeated and we'd be talking about them being possibly the best in A or AA again. Maybe the Hawk faithful can now see how bad it sucks to have kids develop into excellent players in their youth system only to transfer. (If not, ask people from Proctor, Hibbing, Virginia, Ely, Denfeld, etc., they'll tell you what it's like.)

Hawkheads can take comfort in knowing that a 7A final against likely Greenway or Virginia will be against players the Hawks routinely destroyed in youth levels, so hotels rooms in St. Paul can be booked with confidence at this point. And the tourney might have a tough game against an Orono or Cathedral, but this year's team won't be overconfident and complacent like last year's, so orders for Class A champ hoodies can also be placed with confidence.

Amazing how cowardly this program is run.... AA high schools need to boycott playing them!

What I got a kick out of was when the Stauber boys left for Marshall, the Hermantown Association boycotted Stauber Bros. Sporting Goods. They did all of their business with them prior to that but moved it all elsewhere. Probably not a coincidence that they changed their name to Duluth Hockey Company after that. Hypocrisy at it's finest. The program that relies more on transfers than any other throws a tantrum when two players decide to leave to play a AA schedule. You can't make this stuff up.

No horse in the race, but find it amusing. Jeffy, you seem to throw out accusations without really checking, such as no 9th grades ever playing varsity and now saying the Herm association boycotted Staubrers, which might be true. Just make sure your facts are true.

Think that your concern is valid. Defense wins championships and in 2017-2018 Hermantown is giving up 5 goals against per game average. It is early so that stat should come down as year progress. Last year average was 1 goals against average. Plus McEwen is a key loss in net. Time will tell.

I was thinking along those lines today. It is WIDE open. Orono just lost to Blake. Sartell seems impressive. Hermantown isn't what people thought. From a competitive standpoint this will be a very interesting season.

Hermantown is exactly what we thought they were. They live and die by the transfers and open-enrollees.... They will win Section 7 for the automatic trip again.

There have been Staubers at Marshall a few years ago (ok maybe 8-10). Derek and Emma both went to Marshall. Emma played with the PHM Mirage, but was still at Marshall.

I know Marshall was discussing creating their own youth program, because kids in the Hermantown program that were planning on playing for Marshall once they reached HS were "discriminated" against.

If true, then it is incredibly lame to encourage kids to transfer/open enroll to Hermantown yet punish anyone who dare to go elsewhere.

Nolan Krenzen wasn't discrimated against. He lives in the Proctor District and goes to school at Marshall. Hermantown let him play an entire PeeWee AA season illegally. When the District Director asked Biondi about it he told him that he signed up with a Hermantown address. As if Joe and everyone on the board didn't know where the Krenzen's lived. I suppose it all depends on how good of a player you are.

So you are saying everyone new the kid didn't live in Htown. The District new about this and did not investigate, and this went on for the whole season. Is this fact or hearsay?

Fact. Krenzens own two auto dealerships so are very well known. Everyone in the area knew where they lived. A parent reported it to the District Director but not untol after the season. So yes, he played the entire year of PeeWee AA. Then he played Bantam AA in Duluth the next year and for Marshall starting in 9th Grade.
