Just thought this was an interesting perspective from Trent Klatt who, after all, was the head amateur scout for the Islanders. At about 3:00, he states that there's no need for kids to leave their high school hockey team:

What do you expect him to say? He is a high school hockey coach. If he worked for Chevy do you think he would be upselling Fords?

Trent was saying this even before he became a high school coach.

The video says it was published in 2014, before he became a coach.

If you look at the kids from minnesota the islanders drafted when he was the scout I don't think this should come as too big a surprise. A lot of them played through their high school career

Each kids needs are different. The "you can stay in high school" doesn't work for everyone if you want to play next level.

IMO, Before and After is the way to go. Best of both worlds. Tufte and Mattson took this route and couldn't be happier with their decisions. No kid will ever regret staying but many will regret leaving. You only get one shot at being a kid.

The before/after approach is only an option for a very select few high school players. USHL teams won't do that for kids who are not extremely elite players. Mattson and Tufte are just those types of exceptions, 6'5" and athletic.

And they will be high draft picks and the league will be compensated!

And not all kids go to the USHL. Basically what it boils down to is that there is more than one way to make it to where you want to go and in one guy's opinion his way is best. OTOH, there are lots of reasons that don't need to be hashed out on this forum every 6 months or so to leave and go play juniors. To each their own. Good luck to all.

Today the high school hockey player is so different from the 80's and 90's, and they have good options. Do not guilt a kid for leaving, and never judge a kid for staying.
