WBL losses to Woodbury. Played like they have never been coached. Just another season under Sager, where WBL is as good as they are going to get at the beginning of the year, and go down hill from there.

When (if ever) is the last time the WBL hockey team finished a season with a losing record?

For sure 1995-96. Could be 96-97 because I don't know W/L records for non-State tournament teams that season.

With only a few games remaining in the season the point leader for White Bear has 19 total points (a defenseman). Top forward has 18 points. In comparison here are the point leaders per season for some of the previous years:
'10-'11 65pts.
'11-'12 68pts.
'12-'13 67pts.
'13-'14 77pts.

So now the million dollar question - is it the coaching, the system, or the players?

Of course talent is down this year, but I'm not talking about this year, but every year since Sager has coached. His teams peak at the beginning of each year, and decline from then on.

To answer your question, White Bear has finished with losing records in three previous seasons since White Bear and White Bear Mariner combined for the 1983-84 school year.

1992-93 season, White Bear finished 10-12-2 in the first year as head coach for Mike Schwartz. The Bears were 7-7-2 in the Twin Cities Suburban Conference and finished the season losing 7-1 to Hill-Murray in the Section 3 semifinals.

1995-96 season, they were 11-16-1. White Bear was 5-6-1 in the Twin Cities Suburban Conference East Division. The Bears did appear in the State Tournament this season and finished in sixth place behind Alexandria. In the Section 3 semifinals, freshman Shawn Roed scored in O.T. against top seeded Hill-Murray (who finished at 22-2-0).

Schwartz guided the Bears to three consecutive State Tournaments in '94 (Consolation title), '95 and '96. In his four years coaching W.B.L., he had an overall record of 55-48-5.

1996-97 season, they finished 8-15-1. The Bears were 4-9-0 (last place) in the Twin Cities Suburban Conference East Division in the first year for head coach Steve Hurt. They finished the season in the Section 3 semifinals, losing 6-3 to Hill-Murray.

The following season, White Bear was second in the Twin Cities Suburban Conference East Division (two points behind Hill-Murray) at 8-5-0. The Bears beat Hill 4-1 in the Section 3 finals and then were two and out at the State Tournament to complete the year at 16-11-0.

This was Hurt's second and final year as a head coach as he was forced to resign shortly before the 1998-99 season. He was 24-26-1 overall.

On a side-note, in the 2000-01 season, Hill-Murray was 6-4-0 in the Twin Cities Suburban Conference. White Bear beat the Pioneers twice in conference action - 3-2 and 8-0. The Bears won the conference title with a 10-0-0 record and only allowed five goals in conference games.

However, Hill completed their season at 12-14-1 - quite possibly its only losing season.
