Section Changes

When will they change the 2A sections and allow the state tournament to have the actual best teams in the state? For example, section 6AA has 4-5 teams each season that usually all deserve to go to state.

Those teams are all in the same area for the most part, so most likely it will never happen.

I'd say it's more likely that Edina gets thrown back in with the current 6AA schools, being that they (or Chanhassen) are the closest geographically.
10 teams in 3AA, New Prague looming with an enrollment of 1123, Kennedy potentially going back to AA. Shift 1 or 2 into section 2AA and Edina likely gets bumped to the West.

Move this post to the girls forum where there is constant whining on this "injustice" from the entitled schools. This will never even be considered from the MSHSL, not their mission statement.

No way would they throw Edina in 6AA making the toughest section even tougher.

Strength of programs is not even a consideration in the MSHSL criteria, enrollment and geography baby.

I'll repeat what I have posted before: The MSHSL state tournement is set up to put the best team from each of 8 different areas I'm the state in a competition together. Not the eight top teams of the year. This is true across the board and arguably is the best way to run a STATE TOURNEMENT. Watch or read Hunger Games, same idea... Without the killing of course

Shifting 2 into 2AA would only give them 9, and we know MSHSL doesn't mind seeing 10 in a section, so you'd have to shift 3 in before somebody moves out. And even then, MSHSL geography starts Section 2AA from the southwest corner of the state and heads towards the Metro. The first team to get bumped would therefore probably be the school furthest NE in the section, which is AHA. Here's the current map...

This is irrelevant anyways, section shifting happens every two years and won't happen until after next season.

There's never a bad time to whine if you're in 6AA.

with spring lake park & Totino joining the NW Suburban next year, will they be playing AA or A?

No reason why joining a new conference would require them to change class, but they can always opt up if they so choose.

Matomedi will be double AA along with New Praque and Highland/Central... Of course only in High school not in Minnesota hockey.

It would make more sense if STMA was in 8AA and Brainerd in 7AA

Not using MSHSL geography. Section 8 starts in the northwest corner of the state, Section 7 from the northeast.

Switch Burnsville to Section 1, and Eden Prairie and Holy Family to 2?
Lakeville Teams need more playoff competition, and Rochester youth program & JV does not seem to be building momentum to providing it.
Meanwhile, Section 6 is overloaded, so splitting the two most southernly teams out into Section 2 would help equalize things.

Overloaded? Strength of programs is not in the criteria.

Heres my take on Section 6AA..yes, they have quality teams year in and year out and yes, they win games and alot of them. With that said I think I can speak for alot of us and say that almost everytime we play a team from this group and review the game you find 2 sloppy turnovers at the blue line leaving the zone leading goals on outstanding finishes..you usually hit their pipe 2 or 3 times and they finish on one of their powerplay chances..bam you lose 4-1 or 4-2 and you reflect and think..that team was good but not so amazing that I sat there in awe watching. The teams aren't so dominant that you wonder what kind of milk is served west of the mississippi and east of burl oaks golf club. 95% of the game you're right with them stride for stride. At least that's my 2 cents worth. I do enjoy watching them, I also enjoy watching any game in our conference/section as they seem to all be battles.

Ok, call it a geographic change
Burnsville/and or Apple Valley moves into 1A, because the 1A geograpy has been redefined to go up to the Minn River in that area.
And EP and/or HF move to 2A because the 2A geography has been redefined to include teams south of highway 62, and 5 west of there.
There would have to be a fillback to 6 from the Northwest/North if both were moved.

There is no "Highland Central" in mshsl hockey. Central is part of Como Park's program, and there is currently no high school program for Highland Park students. The Como program already is above the AA/A split, but the MSHSL allows them to play down to Class A, which competitively is where they belong.
New Prague is growing, but I don't think it's growing fast enough to go AA in the next cycle. Maybe they will in three years. Chaska, Northfield, Spring Lake Park, Mahtomedi and Kennedy are all bigger than NP, and most (but not all) of those schools are growing too. The other thing to take into consideration is that in order for some of these schools to move up to AA, a Class AA school needs to move down or a AA program has to fold.

Hockey Dad ia correct in much of his post. One correction, however, is that Highland Patk does have a high school program. They re-started their varsity program either two or three years ago.

Ok, think most can agree, that is if know the history and overall strength of teams that Section 6AA is usually one of the strongest sections.
To improve section competitive balance in Section 2 and 4, yes 4 Edina needs some competition, some alignment changes could be done. Will it happen no. So there you have it.

Of course you are correct. Don't know what I was thinking.
