7AA Update

In My opinion...
1. Grand Rapids-Only 6-6...4-0 in section games (all wins against top 6 in section) 2-6 the rest of the way, but biggest loss was two goals. Played basically all top 20 teams so far...minus Greenway
2. Brainerd-Just red hot. Tying both Elk River and Cloquet. Whichello is playing outstanding and they are scoring enough to win.
3. Cloquet-A little bit inconsistent. Big section loss to GR and a tie with Brainerd. Still, 6-3, and a great goalie. Very capable team
4. Elk River-Lost close with GR, tied Brainerd, beat East somewhat handely. They have about 5 good players that can beat you on any given night. Good Goaltending.
5. Duluth East-Way too many question marks. They only solid, consistent point has been Leis, who has to be good to keep the hounds in games. Need a better forecheck and better play in their own end.
6. Forest Lake-Has potential but hasn't shown it. Beat brainerd however, that could help them. They need to outscore their opponents tho. They often give up 3-6 goals.
7. Cambridge-One good line of hockey talent. A real, real sound goalie. If they all come together on a given night...maybe they can play with a top 6 team.
8. (tie) Andover-Somewhat played with Elk River (6-2 loss). They just aren't at the next level yet
8. (tie) St. Francis-Big start, 9-3, but they just don't play the caliber of teams as the top six do. They are improving every year. They might win 18 games and be the 9 seed...

_________________

BOB

i would have to ask you a question. cloquet is an inconsistent team? how so? they lost to grand rapids in their first game of the year. inconsistent?

I mean inconsistent within a game. They can dominated for 6-8 minutes, and then just be dominated for 6-8 minutes. They seem to get a little caught up in something. Don't get me wrong, they are a good team. But, if they play a little more consistent on Monday night, they beat Brainerd for sure.

_________________

BOB

I think he means they tied Brainerd. I think everyone was looking at CEC as being a step ahead of everyone else, they won some nice games along the way. Though, tieing Brainerd kinda sent a message that they aren't ahead of anyone, and don't deserve more consideration as a favorite than any of the other top 4 teams in the section.

I have a feeling East will be tough, next year. They have quality talent, but they are too young, and those young bodies don't have the muscle of the seniors and juniors. It showed last night. The Elks threw the hounds around like rag dolls.

I wouldn't writeoff east just yet. They still have a lot of time to make their mark in 7AA. Soon they will be one of my favorite teams . Right now I am starting to like Bloomington Jefferson

Looks like I'll be heading east on 1/12, to see first hand the mighty Indians against those young doggies (a grayhound is a dog right, not a bus ).

Too soon to tell

Interesting speculation on how the 7AA seedings may fall, as if it really matters in early January. Upcoming 7AA contests over the next couple of weeks will likely set things in place. It's good to see more teams involved in the race, however until East is knocked off their throne they're still my darkhorse pick. The number one reason is their goaltender. If anything happened over the holidays, the rest of the state took notice of this kid. Sarsland talked about it last night. I'd rather play an above average team with an average goaltender, than an average team with an above average goaltender. Did that make any sense. Enough talk about East's youth. Yes, they are young based on class and the number of seniors in the line-up. Don't forget, Flaherty and Johnson played a regular shift on a third place team last year. Their vulnerability is on the blue-line. They'll get better, but they're four defensemen deep. If one goes down with injury or sickness, look out. Can you say "forward to defenseman conversion"? Wouldn't be surprised.

It's not too soon to tell, or like it's WAY to early to speculate. Most of the head to head matchups are in the books. After next Saturday I think only the 2 and 3 seed will be left to be determined when CEC and Brainerd have a rematch later on. Plus, after a 7AA game it's only a natural thing to discuss. And fun.

Give it another 2 weeks and it will work itself out. Still too early to determine 1-5.

Forest Lake isn't locked into #6, I don't think. I'm sure they feel they should be ahead of Brainerd, and they still play Cloquet and East. I know they play East at home, not sure on the Cloquet one as to the location.

It's too early to determine a particular team in one specific spot, agreed. However, I think it's safe to say Cloquet and Grand Rapids will be in the top 3 somewhere.

It's been warm here in Anchorage like the weather you get during section playoffs, so that's been adding to my hockey fever.

All of us know it is too soon to tell, but if you can't talk hockey and what if's, then where is the fun...

And we all like to show off our brilliant hockey prophet minds by analyzing, crunching numbers, looking at stats, or just picking a team based on their jersey, their past, or our home town. (And some of us show we are not all that brilliant, but do manage a free meal out of it).

So I'll predict, GR pays well but goes down in the last 2 games. CEC plays well and (choke, choke) EAST plays well.

CEC
GR
East
Brainerd
Elk River
Flake

Of course, if the last 3 form a voting cartel of Cambridge, St Frannie, Andover things could look a lot different.

That would be awesome. Put CEC, Brainerd, and Elk River on their own side of the bracket and Rapids plays the winner of Forest Lake/East. It would be like 2 years ago all over again where the #2 seed is the easier route.
