Could it have something to do with rolling green "wave-like" hills?

You're obviously not from the Greater Grand Forks area... There are no hills anywhere near here

I think it's similar to Alabama's Crimson Tide nickname. EGF's color is green, and the idea is that they are as unstoppable as an ocean wave. Roseau's nickname was the Green Wave when they won their first state title. I don't know when it was changed to the Rams.

Actually I think they do have hills in Grand Forks. At least for part of the year when the sugar beets are being harvested, then it is back to being waveless.

No matter what it is they had a nice season and were fun to watch.

It's not something tangible. It's more of a state of mind.

This is what I got earlier today:

"From the green wheat fields when the wind blows... green waves of grain."

Its when the wind blows hard across a lake that is receiving way too much phosphorus runoff. The resulting algae blooms create bright green waves. Becoming fairly common in Minnesota.
