From what I can tell, it looks like a Boarding/Prep school out in New Hampshire....

How is this possible? Did he not graduate from STA last year? He was a senior, and he certainly did not transfer in the two months after winning state.

Phillips Exeter is a high school, and he appears to be playing there this year??? I'm confused.

Have always liked this player, one of the under-appreciated skill skaters in the state.

It's called a post-graduate "PG Year." Athletes with take them to get an extra year of on-ice/on-field experience before college, and to take another shot at getting interest from college recruiters. They can also use the time to bolster college entrance exam scores or their high school coursework (e.g. retaking classes that you originally got low grades on, or taking college-required classes that you didn't take when you had a chance). Also can be a bridge if the kid (or, more likely, his parents) wants to get into an elite Ivy League school....headmasters at boarding schools like Choate and Exeter have good connections. If they got rejected from Harvard or Yale their Senior Year, it provides another bite of the apple.

I think that it's pretty rare for hockey players to take prep years, since playing junior hockey is a much cheaper option with much better recruiting exposure (even if it's for a Tier 3 team). Happens more often in sports like lacrosse and soccer. As far as eligibility goes....those schools play independent schedules (like Shattuck), and don't have to worry about the East Coast equivalents of the MSHSL.

almostashappy is spot on. I knew a kid that spent three years as a post grad (at Choate), solely because his parents were determined he would go to Harvard, probably since birth. It took him those three extra years to get the grades and test scores that he needed to get accepted. The fact that he was a very good hockey player no doubt helped his cause too.

And it would appear, having loaded parents helps too...........

Really? Sees the ice well not much in the way of size or speed. Hasn't exactly lit up the NA in the first half of a season. For a 95 birth year this seems premature. Needs 2 more years of juniors IMO.

I think the article on nahl.com says Fall of 2015, so it does look like he will do another full season atleast in juniors.

Phillips Exeter was originally set up to be a feeder school to Harvard. I don't believe sports are their primary focus like places such as Shattuck.

Ok. That said, there are parents who will pay $35-40k for their non-athletic kids to take a "PG year" just for the academic "re-do" opportunities, and the chance to reapply to an ivy like Harvard.
