I am new to hockey and this is probably going to be a dumb question...why do tryouts for a AAA team occur 6-7-8 months before they'll actually play together?

Open to answers from anyone willing to drop some knowledge on me.

To get a jump on the other high powered AAA hockey factories so they get the best six and seven year old hockey players that they can find.

I have often wondered why MN does that as well. The rest of the spring/summer hockey universe holdd tryouts in March right before spring. I would think at the youngest ages you would want to wait considering the huge jumps some kids make in a winter season at the younger age groups. I can see maybe Pee Wee's and Bantams not making any quantam leaps but I think squirts and mites certainly do during winter seasons. Hence a kid who maybe didn't quite make it in Spetember can become a stud by March in those young age groups.... So I have always wondered that as well.....

The Top two programs do it early, so everyone else feels like they have to keep up with the Jones. It's unfortunate and couldn't agree more on why it is so early. But in Chicago, they try out in April for their team that starts in Septembe.

Um yeah, I think there is some culling that will go on over the course of the winter. I wouldn't feel to solid about my spot on this team in the fall.

To be fair, they do say they are evaluating prospects so I don't think this is a final tryuout.

The obvious answer to the "why are tryouts so early?" question. The sooner you pick the teams the sooner you can start collecting the money.

Wait until March for tryouts? No money until April. That wouldn't work at all.

A lot of it is ice time. It's hard to get decent ice times once the winter season is in full swing.
