How do you have an all-state team and fail to include anyone from the second best team in the state?

Kelly Pannek, Liv Halvorsen, Brittany Wheeler, Caitlin Reilly, Abby Miller.

Seriously? Talk about misinformed voters.

No Peterson or Bowman?

Nobody from EP or Edina?

I was scratching my head too trying to figure out how they missed some great players who most here would agree should have been included. Perhaps they should change those who do the voting from "statewide media" to "statewide college coaches".

This is good humor! There are some good players in the group and there are some most of us have never heard of. I would say look at the Lets Play Hockey All State/Honorable Mention list. There appears to be a lot more thought put into that list. Not saying I agree with everything there either but at least a person can make good arguments for most of that. The sad part is there are some players that will be up for Ms. Hockey and Ms. Goalie next year that weren't apparently deemed good enough to make this list. It would be nice if the "voters" actually watched a few games before providing input on this kind of thing.

Folks your just going to have to chalk this one up as one of those political lists. They obviously just tried to pick people from all over the state and make every part of the state feel included.

The player of the year and second team all state forward got their lunch handed to them when they faced Bowman and Peterson.

Saw Pannek play many times and I am not sure their is anyone better than her. She is a slam dunk for Miss Hockey next year if she plays just a little more and complains just a little less.

Agree that Pannek was a huge oversight. How much "statewide media" is in the northern part of the state, based on their players' relative over-representation?

I believe the definition of "statewide media" used in this case is the media throughout the state. Would you prefer it to be more "Metro-centric"?

I'd prefer that the media make wise choices.

Two from Warroad and one from Crookston is over representation? (Hermantown is Eastern Minnesota)

Sorry Champ...anything 180 miles north of the cities is "up north". Or is Warroad "central" and Moorhead "western" Minnesota?

But yes, Breiland from Crookston over Pannek is "over-representation" at it's greatest! Just ask Mr. Frost!! I won't even start with the 2 from the Blue Army left off.

Breiland averaged over 2 goals a game and led her nine team conference in goal scoring two straight years. She had about twice as many goals per game as Marvin and Gardner, playing in the same conference without the same team support. I'm not sure you can argue she isn't deserving.

Let's just take the 5 top goal scorers in the state then and make them the "All State" team.

After all... most other things like leadership, ice awareness, passing, forchecking, backchecking, puck battles and +/- are way overrated anyways.

We'll call it the "All Danglers" team. I vote we just remove defensemen from the list.....goals, goals, goals, baby!

I hope they never make a rule letting a hockey game be decided by who scores the most goals.

Agreed...I think they should make backchecking illegal, it would make the game so much more exciting...goals, goals, goals!

Did I read those stats correctly?? 53 goals and 13 assists, with Zero goals vs Warroad and Roseau twice? Pannek had 31 goals and 45 assists....and I am not even a BSM fan!

Pannek had a much tougher schedule (21st vs. 66th on KRACH) so considering SOS her point totals are even more impressive. Also remember that she missed five games when she played with the USA U18's in Finland.

Hannah Brandt had the same problem as Breiland last year at Hill Murray with twice as many goals as assists. A year later, she is now #2 in the nation in assists. Why is that?

OK, last time I will try to help this kid out. It's clear that people only want to believe that players from their kid's team, section or conference have the best talent.

The SOS scoring theory was laughed at on the boys side as being backwards. Here, Benilde played a SOS way below its KRACH ranking. Crookston played a SOS equal to its KRACH rating. Over the course of the season, Panneck's team was expected to blow out its opponents. Over the course of the season, Breiland's team was expected to be equal to its opposition's talent. If anyone should be penalized for SOS and scoring, it is players from Benilde. Benilde should have played a tougher SOS given its team's KRACH.

I'm not ripping Panneck. I'm just saying it is unfair to rip Breiland.

Also a couple games missing from hub for Crookston.

During the 2011-12 regular season Brandt had 52 goals and 30 assists vs. Breiland's 53-13, so the goals-to-assists ratio's are quite a bit different (1.7 vs. 4.1). That said and to answer your question, it seems pretty obvious that both Pannek at BSM (this year) and Brandt at H-M (last year) had stronger support from their linemates than did Breiland who presumably had to do more on her own. Hard to say for sure because I've never seen her play!

Miss Beiland was an island of talent in a sea of good but "average" players on her team. She was asked to do alot and did; she scored all 4 goals in a 4-2 win over Roseau, she played forward, defense, etc.

I say good for Breiland and the rest for getting some recognition. I had never heard of Breiland but it doesn't mean she isn't a good player. But, comparing a player who is going to play for the the #1 ranked college team and has played for the national team to someone who has/is not is kind of a waste of time. There are many others that could make good arguments for this particular recognition but it really doesn't matter. There are so many "all star recognition" lists that are clearly based on politics that we all need to take this with a grain of salt. The pioneer press now only recognizes those from the east metro but somehow that includes Redwing and the Strib has its own rules. Let's Play Hockey at least involves participation from the HS and MN State Hockey League but even that has its politics. I guess i would say call a spade a spade and move on. Its very far from perfect but if it helps someone get a college scholarship with some college that doesn't know any better i say good for them.

Marvin as player of the year.... You have got to be kidding. She will fall off a cliff at the next level without her dad around to pad the stats.
