Based on as many factors as I could vet out, I wrote a little post on the number of bids given out to each district next year.
Enjoy,

How bout you show your predictions of what associations will be "Chosen" in each district?
Who are your Lucky 3 in District 2?
Who will be left mad when only four are picked in District 10?
How will these combined PeeWee/Bantam units be formed when an association's PeeWees are at the top and their Bantams are at the bottom of the standings?
How bout we hear it from the advocate.......?

What is a bid?
Is this strictly primary high school size, A or AA, or are there politics involved?

""They expect AA high schools to play AA in youth""
Who would get the only three AA bids in District 2 then? Just your guess, please!
Nothing will change if all the associations with AA high schools move up to AA, right? And then you'll have the same A schools that will opt up, right?.......
This will flop before the season even starts.

Correct: it will be similar to HS but not exact (associations like NSP, Kennedy, Winona who play HS AA will likely be allowed to play A)
Here's my guess on who the AA, D2 teams will be: Forest Lake, Highland, Mounds View, Roseville, Stillwater, Tartan, and White Bear. A: Mahtomedi and NSP.
Assuming there is a D2 tourney and the bids are handed out that way, here is a wild guess based on my local knowledge of teams:
PWA: Stillwater, White Bear, Highland
BANA: Stillwater, White Bear, and Roseville (less local knowledge at this level...plz advise if I'm off, the more I know the better).

Mahtomedi will obviously opt up to play AA and then you will have exactly the same teams that played A last year.
Why in the world would Mahtomedi drop to a lower level when they were very competitive with these associations?
Where's the change then?

The proposed AA playoff format that was discussed at the MN Hockey spring meeting was as follows.
Each district that has at least 2 AA teams would be guaranteed 1 team to the 32 team regions. That would give about 10 teams an automatic region birth, much like the NCAA conference b-ball tourneys. The rest of the 22 teams will be selected acording to a ranking system similar to the Myhockeyrankings.com one.
Once the 32 teams are decided, they will be ranked 1 to 32 based on the above system along with coaches and DD. They will then be placed in 4 regions according to their rank and regardless of what district they are from. This will be much like the NCAA basketball tournament with 8 teams in each region and the top 2 teams making the state tournament.
This is the best way to get the top teams, regardless of district or geography, in the AA state tourney, which is what the goal should be.
The A tourney can still be run the old way so there is statewide representation.

Kinda throws out the underdog. Two years ago Maht. finished last in d2 play. Then went to regions after a great play-offs. Seems like the new system needs work before throwing it at the kids.

OG, Forest Lake still has a chance if they win there district tournament. If they don't and are not a top 32 team they really don't deserve to make it to regions in AA. This should not be a feel good, everyone gets a medal tourney, it should be for the best teams that have proved themselves all year.

The NCAA basketball tournament is full of surprise cinderella stories and they don't just have the highest ranked teams. If we're bringing up basketball
Sounds like the mega associations got what they wanted and will have 32 regulars for this new Elite Only Tournament. Is anyone else able to see that the talented will migrate to the regulars? Able to see that kids will know they have no chance of their own cinderella story? Able to see how much more the kid on the outside will want to be an inside regular? Able to see that this is all for the mega associations?

There are automatic bids and bids if you win districts? Do all teams still play in districts? Regions?
How are the 32 decided on, if you know?

DumpandChase, best team by record or when it counted?
Great example of the excitement that might be lost.

My understanding is that each district can decide how the AA and A teams play in the regular season. In playoffs they will separate and run their own playoff format with 1 team getting an automatic bid to regions.
The rest of the teams will be seeded by a ranking system similar to the one that myhockeyranking.com uses. By the way, they are very accurate in identifying the best teams. A coach and DD from each district will be on a committee to decide how the teams are seeded into regions. The team record is not the only thing that will be looked at. Strength of schedule and quality of wins will also be taken into consideration. The whole body of work by a team is what will be used.
The AA regions and state will fair, not equal. There is still the A tournament that teams will play in that is run the same old way so everyone will get a chance.

There will be no change to the teams in District 2 then........... Beside adding the extra A in district play.
