East Grand Forks vs Edina for the Bantam A Championship. David vs Goliath
I believe everyone expected a Wayzata vs Edina final as those 2 teams seemed to be the best most consistent teams throughout the year. Congratulations to East Grand Forks on their season and their play this weekend. You have made this game very interesting.
From the data at MyHockey Rankings Edina is a 1-2 goal favorite.
Common opponents Edina has a commanding 17-2-1 against EGF 7-6 record.
Edina has played 5 games in March EGF has played 7
All the data points to a Hornet victory but going with my heart and I'm picking the Boys from up Nort! EGF has won games playing from both behind and ahead this weekend. If the refs let the kids decide the game, EGF's physical play will slow down Edinas speed and skill. That same physical play could lead to Edina taking a few penalties. EGF's goalie has played well all weekend. He will be the key to a EGF victory.

I have seen EGF play and they are very capable of winning. I agree their goalie may need to be the difference, plus taking advantage of any power plays they get. Edina can play undisciplined at times and take penalties, so if given the opportunity EGF will need to score on the PP.

great post butt...thanks for the research.
I've been to the MN Hockey 20 times in the last 12 hours and it still reads EGF over Wayzata....that is a crazy upset (based on the numbers).
Sidebar: same with Wayzata's B team losing to Duluth Denfeld (one of my favorite teams)...those two Wayzata teams had such great seasons.
I picked both Wayzatas, even though based on head to head, despite Edina's mastery of Wayzata it didn't seem like it could last this weekend (I'm wrong again, oh well)
Good luck to both teams...should be a great final.

Being from EGF, I am hoping for the best.
Problem being that this is pretty much the same EGF PeeWee A team from a couple of years ago that had an exceptional record and beat alot of good PeeWee A teams.
However, that PeeWee A team played Edina twice and lost by scores of something like 9 - 1 and 10 -1.
I hope they fare better today!!
Good luck EGF

i think you have to go with edina... they have won peewee a state. but i would love to see a tough team from up north win state and show these city boys what its like to play hockey.

This is what is great about the current format, a one class system. If they kept this in HS, they wouldn't have to worry about teams moving up and Section 8 would probably have teams representing other than Moorhead and Roseau.

Yes that is very true but you have to take a look at east grand forks being a class a team in high school and Edina being a class as powerhouse. Will be interesting to see in a couple of years seeing egf hs maybe winning some state titles.

Attended the title game..EGF has some nice players...but not nearly the overall depth, polish and talent of the top 2 Edina lines (3rd line for Edina didn't play much..as expected in a title game)...close 1st period...shots 22-21 EGF after 2 periods and Edina up 4-1...Edina goalie out-played the EGF goalie...with that being the case...EGF had no chance. Still a fun game to watch but Hornets were simply too good.

I NEED TO ADD that the top 4 Edina D were every bit as good as their top 6 forwards today...just a very tough team to beat n their goalie is also (PLAYING HOT).

Edina is a deserving Bantam A Champion. They have been one of the top 3 teams all year. All the data pointed to a Edina victory . I thought Edina played the 3rd line allot. I saw Dornbach on the ice for a regular shift and on power plays. Edina goalie Boe had a good game. Today was the day to outplay the other teams goalie and he did. Congrats to the Hornets for another fine season, All they do in Edina is win titles! Question for next year? Whose is going to leave?

Does anyone else find it amazing that this Edina team lost several players to high-school varsity teams, but was still able to win state?

I think the only team that had a chance to beat edina was white bear and they lost 1-0 edina was the best team in the state by far and they deserved to win it.

buttend...Dorny was playing RW on 2nd line, Bellows at Center, Kaske at LW (thats why he was on PP's - 2nd unit).
1st line (today) was Masterman centering Arnason and ? (not sure who ...but it was not Kaske). top 4 D were Foley, Zulsdorf....and I believe Fuss and ?
Not criticizing Edina for largely rolling 2 lines
...just saying they did...3rd line played more when game was out of reach by mid-way through the 3rd period. Boe played well...made some nice saves...once Edina tied it 1-1,,,they simply rolled. EGF also had a goal in the first couple minutes waved off...on a late off-sides call...would have been a soft goal...once that was reversed...Boe was really on his game.

You were not paying attention. Thrid line played a fair number of shifts. Two key forwards were out (one 1st line - Palmer and Bowlby). They converted a D to F for the tournament and he handled himself fine. 3rd set of D played little until the 3rd period but offensive line played close to regular shifts. Goalie doesn't get enough credit as one of top in the state. Where are all the early season Edina detractors? This group supposedly lost too much too compete.

Firm believer from day 1 it was going to be Wayzata or Edina winning it all. Edina lost a lot but you forget they are very deep and this group dominated state two years at in a row at pee wees. Wayzata hit a bump and EGF played a great game to pull off the upset.
Great year of hockey to all teams.

Don't mean to split hairs here...but I was paying attention.

(admit I haven't seen edina play much) although my son's team did practice with them once and had a short controlled scrimmage in February...in any event...Masterman, Arnason and (converted D evidently) and Bellows, Kaske and Dornbach were the top 2 lines (in SHIP game) and played a
lot more than the 3rd line...that said I'm sure Edina's 3rd line would be a top 2 line on many Bantam A teams.
Both of Edina's 2 top lines played on the PP, pretty intact...quite a luxury not having to load up the best players on one unit...(like most Bantam A teams need to do).
Wayzata and WBL also had nice runs...EGF is VERY GOOD, #12 can fly..still not sure how they beat Wayzata...but they did...also a hell of a run by Andover...taking Edina to OT...amazing girl goalie (Maddy Rooney)....Brad Frost hopefully has taken note of her as a future recruit.

Edina's third line played considerable minutes. I stand behind my view that they played much more than any other third line in the tournament. !st line RW was not the converted D. He was on the third line with Wait.

Although I was in Alex at the PWAs it would have been nice to see how Andover's young lady goalie fared this weekend. 3-2 OT loss to Edina? Anyone know if she was in goal all 3 games? Quite a story! She's solid and I say that not because she beat Htown twice in 2 days in regions. UMD's Miller should be knocking on her door before Frost.

If
considerable minutes to you means...played fair amount less minutes than top 2 lines during periods 1 and 2...then we agree....I just (casually)asked my son who also attended the game about this.. he agrees with my playing time assessment. Sounds like a hit a raw nerve, was not my intention...just commenting on what I observed. I guess we will just have to
agree to disagree.
I don't know how much other teams played their 3rd lines in the State tourney..don't know why that matter's, Goal at State is to WIN and Hornets WON..

Congrats to the Hornets players and coaches...thought they ALL played a very fine game.
