A full slate of games for the SEC, all ten teams in conference action for the first time this season. Parity seems to have settled in, gone are the super lines of last year, back are some strong goaltenders, seasoned teams, and youthful teams. The battle for SEC bragging rights starts in full tonight.

Two teams looking for their first conference win. The Raiders are reeling, losing their last four contests, after netting seven goals in an impressive opening win against Blake they have only managed two goals per game in their four losses. The Raptors are coming in with a four game winless streak; they were shutout on Saturday against Hastings and salvaged a tie against rival Woodbury for their only point thus far in conference play. They are also struggling to put the puck in the net averaging only two goals per game. I suspect they will get better as the season goes on, I’m sure it’s been very emotional for this team with the tragic loss in the off season.

The Rangers, winners of three straight host the Mustangs who are looking for their first conference points of the season. Mounds View is coming off a disappointing Saturday loss to Roseville, a game in which they outshot Roseville 51-21; we’ll see how the youthful Mustangs rebound. Forest Lake meanwhile seems to have righted the ship, although their three straight wins have come against overmatched STMA and Park teams along with a win over a decent Woodbury squad.

These two teams have been up and down so far in the early stages of the year, both teams have shown the ability to play some decent hockey. Park started SEC play with an impressive tie against Stillwater but has lost their last two games, scoring only one goal in each. Hastings has two early wins in conference play including Saturday’s shutout of East Ridge. The Raiders are struggling to find offense predictably after graduating last year’s SEC point’s leader.

Too early to really know what the Ponies are about, but, a tie against Park and another against a surprisingly weak Holy Angels squad and a two goal win over a struggling Cretin isn’t that promising, however they have yet to be beaten. Goaltending will be the key for Stillwater and they have a good one, arguably the best in the SEC and he will keep them close in most every game. Roseville is the hottest team winning five straight to open the year, as usual they are a scrappy speedy team that plays solid D, replacing last year’s goaltending will be in question, so far so good. The Raiders were outplayed badly by Mounds View on Saturday but somehow found a way to win. This is a veteran team filled with many players that have played significant varsity roles since they were sophomores.

A tough weekend trip for the Bears to the north sent them home with their first two losses on the year, they came back nicely with a convincing Tuesday win over Park. White Bear’s offense is still there along with a blistering power play, the Royals may want to stay out of the box. Woodbury’s strength again this season seems to be an underrated goaltender in Erickson; he once again is playing solid this season. Big test for White Bear on the road, a win keeps them near the top; a loss will raise the question if they can repeat.

Are the raiders a quality team this year? or is it too early to tell? My Bears seem to be lacking a bit in the depth department, but I presume they will be in the running as usual for conference champs....

Great game.

Bit of a controversy here - Evan Erickson scored in OT but goal was waved off. It was a breakaway and ref was behind play and did not make the goal signal. Woodbury stormed the ice and lined up to shake hands. Refs huddled and ruled no goal.

I was impressed with the top line of WBL. WBY won the first period 2-0 and had good flow with Broadbent in net. WBL pretty much dominated Period 2 and 3 with Erickson in goal - he was huge in keeping the game a tie. OT was back and forth. WBL out shot WBY like 40-20 for the game.

Hard to argue the goal/no goal when the ref was right there on top of the call. I dont care where you were sitting the ref was the guy in the best spot to call that one in or not. He was 2 feet behind the net had the right angle and all.

I will give you the fact that it has to be the closest non goal I have ever seen.
