Last season we had good participation from forum readers on these weekly contests, and I’ve decided to give it another go this year. If enough of our “hockey experts” take part I’ll try to keep it going, tracking the results and announcing the winners at the end of each week. We’ll award one point for forecasting the winner of each game and an extra bonus point for guessing any correct score. As always, the idea here is just to have fun - no prizes, other than perhaps forum notoriety and bragging rights!

So, here are the key match-ups to start the 2011-12 season. Once again, to make the list of “Big Games”, both opponents must be currently ranked: in the Top 20 if they are a 2A team and in the Top 10 if 1A. Best of luck to everybody this season, especially the players and coaches.

Interesting that our prognosticators so far believe there is a clear favorite in all games but one. The lone exception is the Red Wing/South St. Paul tilt, on which there is an even split at 5 apiece. In all the other games the favorite is drawing at least 8 of the 10 votes. Of course that can only mean one thing: the conventional wisdom will be proven wrong when some of the supposed underdogs pull the upset.

No doubt it's Option 2! Still fun, though, trying to predict which way these games will go.

I see where we've already had a ranked team get "upset" by an unranked team, as last night #17AA Eastview fell to Hastings 5-2.

Future Gopher Hannah Brandt posted a hat trick tonight to lead her Hill-Murray team past Lakeville North, 5-3. Shots were 27-18 Hill-Murray.

Two of our contestants, Otter and DmanDad1980, correctly predicted the 5-3 score and earn the extra bonus point to up by one on the rest of the field. Everybody else picked Hill-Murray to stay within one point of the early leaders.
