This question is both wonky and newbie, but I am curious about it. It's for any of the old timers on the "bored" who want to pull up a stool and tell us all a boring administrative story.

I realize that the high school league and Minnesota Hockey are completely independent of each other, but they obviously play in the same sandbox.

Is there an actual institutional relationship or agreement between them about who has authority over what? Does MN Hockey officially support or endorse MN high school hockey?

More interestingly, maybe someone can give a short history of how this relationship, if any, evolved?

(Also, if this is covered in an old thread, I'd appreciate a pointer in that direction...)

USA Hockey does not govern/oversee/sanction the MSHSL.

While I'm probably not the person to ask about the MSHSL's dealings with MH/USAH, I do think it is interesting how many youth associations have become somewhat subservient to high school programs. The reasons for this are obvious enough, as it gives good high school coaches power to teach their systems throughout the program and build up team loyalty, which seems to lead to success at all levels. However, there are some questions about control that get swept under the rug, and the recent decision to align association boundaries with "school attendance areas" further muddies the situation.

That's a good point, and leads to the larger question: Is Mn High School Hockey really what keeps Tier 1 youth hockey away? It is, after all, the ultimate "community based" system and a natural extension of Mn youth hockey.

And I'd be very interested to know how Shattuck-St Mary's ever came into being as a Tier 1 AAA program in the state (of course it involved lots of money), and what agreements have to be in place for them to operate (if any), and why no other similar programs have emerged.

I would assume that this comment is aimed at bigger cities. THat said, you have to realize that playing tier 1 on a level as high as mshsl boys hockey is would be way out of reach finance wise for the vast majority of associations...associations including the people involved. I would think that even the majority of TC area clubs would not be able to make it work.
