First one is locked..... But how can Apollo be a contender??? Didn't their goalie graduate? He Was the only reason they got by Little Falls!

I stand by my earlier post.

Four team race.

Little Falls
Fergus Falls
Apollo
Alexandria

The team playing their best hockey at the end of the year will go to state.

Little falls seems like be the most likely to come out of the section but with what happened last year no one knows.. But they have a very solid goaltender and three solid lines so it should be a good year!

Did Sartell and Wilmar lose much?

It is really anyone's race. Edge goes to Alex and LF as both know how to win.

In2Hockey has the best list ive seen thus far.

Little Falls is clearly the pre-season favorite and I dont think theres any doubt to that. They are the deepest team in the section and have very solid goaltending to back it up, also a very hungry group of kids after being upset last year by Apollo.

Speaking of Apollo, they return their entire defense core for this upcoming season which is gonna be huge for them considering they lost their starter from last year, their backup is more than capable of coming in and playing as he showed in games last year. The Eagles just have to find to put the puck in the net.

Alexandria is Alexandria, they found a way to win last year and once you get there once, its hard to not go again. They have that winning way and that big game experience and thats gonna be huge for them as they return a big group of their players also.

Fergus Falls is the darkhorse of the section. They return a very talented group of players and I believe their returning starting goalie too. They play solid hockey and are more than capable of making it to St. Paul come March.

As for Sartell and Willmar, Sartell is gonna be a very young team and their strenght is gonna be defense, I see them struggling to score goal and their young netminder needs to find a way to keep the puck out of the net. Willmar lost basically the whole group of players that led them to the section finals last year, what they have going for them (If he returns) is the Finnish goalie who played for them last year.

Sartell doesn't have a goaltender that's seen legitimate varsity experience. Taylor Shaw will most likely be their starter and he's seen about 50 min's tops in his varsity career.

Dont they also have a smaller backup whos gonna be a sophomre this year I believe? I very well may be wrong here though.

Rumor has it that Willmar's Finnish goalie didn't even stay in town to complete the school year last year. Something doesn't quite add up on that educational venture.

The real question is if he was so wild about coming to the states to play MN high school hockey, why did he end up in the hockey hotbed of Willmar? If I were him and that was my first experience, I would pack up and leave as well...

Nothing wrong with coming to the states and playing in a section final, Willmar should have went to state IMO but the expierence is still there and its a rather good one I would think.

NOTE:

The BW Blades (Breckenridge, MN/Wahpeton ND) WILL be competing in sectin 6A of the MSHSL this year. This explains why Detroit Lakes was jettisoned to the north, I still don't agree with it though. In years past BW has been listed in section 6a or 4a but always competed in North Dakota, not so this year.

As far as the section goes, I think there will definitely be a two team race and possibly as much as 5. In no particular order I am watching WIllmar, Little Falls, Apollo High, Alexandria, Fergus Falls. Not real sure on Sartell. My guess is that LF will be dang strong. Alex is the two time defending champs, Sartell sure had a season last year, and Willmar was warming up nicely. Can't look past what Apollo did to LF last year and Fergus lost a lot of close games with a younger team.

Little Falls coming off a loss while Apollo opens the season with this game, should be interesting to see how the Eagles come out and play for their first game of the year. Most of the same players from last years game are returning so this should be a great game!

No no you are correct, Elliot Brookins. From what I hear, Shaw and Brookins split time during the weekend scrimmages, so we'll see who comes out on top in the upcoming weeks.

We will really find out a lot about Little Falls in the next few weeks. The old knock against them has always been their schedule, but that will not be the case this year. They have already played Hibbing (5-4 loss) and are playing at Virginia and International Falls this weekend. They follow that up with Cathedral and Rochester Lourdes next week, Rogers the following week and even see Mound Westonka and Hutchinson in their Christmas tournament.

I hope it isn't the case, but they could be an improved team from last year (20-4) and be sitting 2-5 after next week.

Little Falls falls to 1-4 on the season with yet another one goal loss (4-3 to Cathedral). They lost on their northern trip 4-3 to Virginia and 5-4 in OT to International Falls before their game tonight. The Flyers were up 3-1 in the 3rd period before a foolish clearing attempt by the goalie led to one goal and then a barrage of penalties (two by #6 and a 5 min and game misconduct by #19 with 2:00 left in the game gave Cathedral the man advantage to break the tie with about a minute left).

Up to Fergus and then home vs. Lourdes... not a pretty start for this squad.

In a way im shocked and in a way im not shocked on how theyve started the season, they have had a rather tough schedule to start the year they just cant play a whole game and play it consistantly, that Fergus game will be big for Little Falls.

lf had to work to make it3-0.
Fergus looking rusty

Little Falls 4
Fergus Falls 2

Shots pretty even.
Game difference: LF's 6th game, FF's second. Goaltending.
3 Fergus mistakes equals 3 Little Falls goals, and that's what a good team does.

Little Falls has some nice players, and one GOOD goalie. And I might add a motivational coach.
Fergus Falls also has some nice looking players, solid goaltending. They clean things up a bit and they'll be alright.
