Interesting Development at Team Wisconsin Tyrouts

So something occurred at TW tryouts this season that has never occured before. Two players who play high school hockey outside of Wisconsin were at tryouts.

David Zevnik goalie from St. Thomas Academy, and Defenseman Travis Wood from HillMurray were both at the tryouts (Zevnik was at the high performance camp while Wood was not there due to a USHL tryout camp held the same weekend). Wood is highly likely to make the TW team and Zevnik has a chance as well.

It's interesting to note as the two of the players mentioned are from Wisconsin and they are current WI residence but play high school hockey in Minnesota. I don't remember any players on TW ever having played for high schools outside the state, the real interesting part is wondering how their season would line up with TW's postseason schedule since the WI Midget Major State Tournament, that TW takes part in, starts the week after the WI high school state tournament but MN High School tourneys are still going on at that time...... :?: Wonder how that would work if their respective teams make it to state tourney in the MN High School playoffs as they'd certainly be wanted/needed for the WI MM State tourney. Then of course if TW makes it out of state they go on to play in Central Districts and then potentially the national tourney. Seems to me some MN High Schoolers have found a way to work the system so to speak and might be showing many others the potential drawing board for how to proceed if MN doesn't start more actively looking into "after season" oportunities for it's best kids. I am not against these kids doing this at all, but I do think it's interesting and something I'd never thought about before......

Not sure that will work. Usa rosters have to be frozen as of Dec 31 each year and Mn high school league rules say you cannot be on 2 rosters at the same time. I know of players in the past have played on all star teams in Wis and riued ineligible in MN.

They can do this as this is a before and after team. they play enough games to qualify for nationals. It is kind of a wanting the best of both worlds. Play the higher level, more interesting MN high school season but also get some nationals exposure.

Or maybe they just didn't get an invite to the Elite league..........

Would they even be eligible to play for the MN teams in the Elite League since they are WI residence? Remember completely different governing bodies with totally different rules governing high school hockey versus the B&A teams these kids play for. I know the kids who live in WI but play HS hockey in MN when it comes to the National Camps etc... have to tryout in WI because it is based on where they reside. And I know TW is governed by WAHA and has WAHA rules in place and I was thinking the MN teams are probably (don't know this for sure though) governed by MN Hockey and not MHSHL. I was thinking a team like TW or the MN teams in the Elite League probably are dictated by those same rules. Usually the WI kids going to H.S. in MN are going to Schattuck so it's not an issue, as again I don't recall this every happening before but it could open a whole new can of worms maybe?

As long as they play high school hockey in MN, they're eligible for the Elite League.

Ok, cool. That said don't know much about the goalie or his abilities compared to others in MN HS, but I am confident Wood is good enough, already receiving interest from several D1 schools.

From what I understand Tyer Funk of Hill Murray has made Team Wisconsin minor (they play in the ELite D league in the fall and compete for the Midget Minor, aka U16, national championship in the spring). It appears Wood is headed for the OHL and ZSevnik does not appear on any official or projected TW rosters so not sure if he did not make the team or just decided to do soemthing else? But with Funk this is the first time a TW player has made the squad and not played for a WI based high school. No matter what you think of Funk as a player this is certainly a new and interesting development that could have some interesting ramifications....
