Nate Schmidt

May sound like a dumb question, but anyone know what the deal with Nate Schmidt was this year? Seems like not only did he see limited playing time at the U, but the few games he did play in, he played quite a bit of forward. I wouldn't say he is undersized at 6'0" 200lbs, he was a stud in HS (granted he played against a lower level of competition) and he had a real solid year with Fargo in the USHL last year...what's the deal with him?

It seemed like Lucia would rotate between Schmidt, Parenteau, and Holl. Sometime playing one on Friday and off Saturday and vice versa. I liked him alot in highschool too, but it doesn't appear that anyone other than the guys projected to be major impacts are developing at all at the U. It's too bad.

It seems like he must have done something to get in Lucia's doghouse because when he did play he was one of their better defensemen. Why he played forward at all was puzzling to me, but I think he will be playing every night on D next year with Fairchild, Wehrs and presumably Ness gone.

He played forward because of injuries. It was between him and Gardiner at times, and Gardiner should have spent 2-3 years in the juniors.

I am guessing the top 6 defenseman next year will be...
Alt
Marshall

Holl
Schmitt

Helgeson
Student
Keep in mind that is if Ness leaves

I appreciate the responses. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy! Watched him play 10+ times in hs and watched him play 4 or 5 times in USHL and thought he was excellent and would contribute right away. Its too bad, wonder if he is second guessing his decision to go play for the Don? Maybe he should have stayed closer to home and played for Motzko? Hopefully we get to see him utilize his talent next yr.

Did not play forward because of injuries.

Appears as though he has found his place this year. He QB's the powerplay real well and has a ton of helpers so far. Glad to see he's contributing a lot and should be a solid 4 yr player.

That was a guess, thats all.

I was referring to your comment about Schmitt not playing cause of injuries. Please feel free to share your inside sources from last year.

I nailed Alt and Marshall...Schmitt and Holl would be better than helgeson and Holl.

Really can't compete with a great hockey mind like you have. Hope you have a great holiday season!
