Suburban East Tuesday 2/15

The last week of the regular season starts tonight with one conference and three non conference games this evening in the SEC

Park-Cottage Grove at White Bear Lake 8:00 PM
A victory will clinch at least a share of the SEC Title for the Bears; they finish Suburban East play with a game versus Roseville on Thursday and then host Cloquet on Saturday to finish out the regular season. The Bears need to tighten things up defensively before they open Section 4 play. The Wolpack have two shots left to win a game in the SEC they finish up their regular season Thursday against East Ridge. Look for White Bear to celebrate a piece of the crown tonight.

Stillwater at North St. Paul 7:30 PM
The Ponies are coming off a tough 4 goal loss at the hands of Cloquet last Saturday and will look to bounce back over a fellow Section 4 opponent. Stillwater has another three game week with a travel date on Thursday to Hastings and a tough matchup Saturday versus the highly ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s team. The Ponies main concern going into next week’s sectional play has to be their recent lack of goal production. They’ve only scored 5 goals in their last three outings. They should come out of tonight’s game with a win over the Polars.

Hastings at Duluth East 7:00 PM
The Raiders are playing their best hockey of the year right now; they have won six of their last seven and jumped into a 3rd place tie with Roseville. Their top line is on fire and carrying them offensively during the recent stretch. Come sectional time they will need more consistent goaltending and their second and third lines to find a little offense and keep teams off the board. Tough road game against a very good team, good test and tune up for next week, a win would really turn some heads. The Hounds are struggling a bit but should get a much needed win at home.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton at Forest Lake 7:30 PM
The Rangers finally found some offense in a tight 4-3 loss to White Bear Lake on Saturday after being shutout their previous two outings. They face a fellow Section 7 team that dismantled Stillwater last week, scoring five times on the stingy Stillwater defense. A Rangers win could muddle the section seedings but I look for the Lumberjacks to come out on top. Forest Lake finishes the regular season with a home game Thursday against Cretin.

Will Stillwater treat their meeting with a member of the lowly CSC as a scrimmage or a game?

No, Body.... This is not my work.. It is the sole work of WHA, and he has done a better job than I ever could have done..

I would actually have to watch a varsity game to make an opinion. I have seen just one JV game. I have enjoyed my retired life from watching HS hockey in person.

Looks like co-champs at least, barring a 3rd period miracle, and the #2 seed if the Pony/NSP score holds up

A possible quarterfinal matchup between Stillwater and NSP looks even more enticing now! Maybe all that Stillwater facing Hill in the finals chatter will calm down a bit now, seeing how they fared in their last two games. I suppose a good effort against Hastings and especially BSM can change the momentum back for them going into sections.

Like I said in previous posts, I'm hoping and looking forward to a WBL/ Stillwater semi final showdown!

Tuesday Finals

White Bear Lake 7
Park- Cottage Grove 0
The Bears claim at least a share of the SEC Title

North St. Paul 4
Stillwater 0
Chalk one up for the CSC. Inept offense for the Ponies of late costs them any shot at the #2 seed in Section 4. Not palying well at the wrong time.

Forest Lake 5
Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3
Nice win for the Rangers over a section foe, should give them a little confidence going into next week.

Duluth East 12
Hastings 2
10 goal loss not good for the Raiders confidence, expected a better showing.

I have said it the past 3 years that I felt that Mac Jansen was the most gifted player on WBL, and I am happy for his 2011 success.

After Mac made 4th-line varsity as a soph, while Max Birkinbine and Brandon Wahlin were getting the rock star treatment on varsity, Mac and I would sit in the stands before he laced up the skates for the JV games, and we would talk about his game - before every game - how he needs to keep working hard, not get frustrated, and soon he would get his chance. We would talk about the good and bad things he did in the previous games. Then on game days, his dad and I would talk about what we discussed.

Mac has hit the gym, and got physically stronger. His knock was his fear of getting hit, and he was soft, but he kept working hard. Last I knew, he was still just 5'9", but he has every bit of elusiveness and speed on the ice as Wahlin, and can hit the corners of the net like Birkinbine. He has a combination of both their skills, and that made him the most gifted player on the team, in my opinion.

He still may be a bit selfish in his stye of play - I don't know - since I haven't seen any games, but I know with his speed, puck handling skills, he has probably created a lot of odd-man rush scoring opportunities on his own effort.

Mac has had a phenominal year. I believe his performance tonight, gives him 32 goals on the year. He is by far the most improved player on the team, if not the SEC, and with the clutch goals he has had of late, he may very well be the WBL team MVP, if not SEC MVP.

Congrats, Mac. Way to make yourself into the type of player you are today.

I saw the game, weak goal tending didn't help either. I still like their Jr Gold goalie better.

What is gonig on with Park? Sad to see them at the tailend every year. Any real thoughts as to why they struggle year after year, they did have some good players the last couple of years.
