STA takes on defending NJ state champs on saturday. Predictions?

I wish some top publics would go out there. EP and Edina could have a nice barnstorming tour to Michigan and Boston to show the eastern preps who's boss.

Why they playing this game so late?

That statement shows how clueless some Minnesota hockey fans are to the actual strength and state of hockey outside Minnesota. Delbarton will easily win this game. Please recall that they handed Breck a rare loss in their championship season and it was a drubbing at 5-2 last time they were out. In addition they tied eventual State Champion Hill Murray in a scrimmage that same year.

Minnesota fans will get a chance to see one of the best d in the country with Matt Killian (committed to Yale) and highly touted and 6'2" Forward Peter MCMullen. In addition they have twin sophomore brothers (Augstino) who will both be playing D1 following their brothers success (Yale).

Delbarton School is premier New Jersey boys' prep school that has won many ice hockey state championships, including the belated unofficial 1989 state championship played in April 2010 (see http://www.nj.com/hssports/blog/boysice ... hback.html). flatontheice is right, Delbarton will give some Minnesota fans a wake-up call as to the actual strength and state of hockey outside of Minnesota. They came to "the State of Hockey" over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend (see http://www.delbarton.org/news/detail.as ... &NEWSPID=1) and will play Shattuck-St. Mary's this afternoon (Friday, 3:00 p.m.), St. Thomas Academy tomorrow (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.) and Breck on Monday (12:00 noon). Delbarton could very well sweep all three games, depending on how many lines SSM rolls. Too bad Delbarton isn't playing any of our state's top Class AA teams.

I respect what you're saying here, and there's no doubt that ANY state can produce top hockey talent The quantity of the top end talent is what sets different states apart from each other. I am HIGHLY suspicious that this Delbarton team is really a New Jersey all-star team, if you will. I also wonder if it has players on the team from PA and NY. Point being, if Delbarton wins this game as you predict (and assuming what you say is correct, I agree with that prediction) and has the player composition that I suspect, it will be cheapened by the fact that it was a team featuring the best Mid-Atlantic players versus another private school team fed by players from mostly nearby towns

That argument is irrelevant. The come here and play private all-star teams..much the same as them.

That depends on where their players are from. If they're truly a New Jersey all-star private school team, we really don't have anything similar here. That would be like putting a team together of the best players from Hill-Murray, BSM, Breck, STA, CDH and Blake. Surely that type of all star team would beat any of these teams individually with good coaching and enough time together.

On the other hand, if Delbarton draws from an even wider area than just New Jersey, like the Mid-Atlantic area and up into New England, then they complete more with the SSM's of the world and therefore SHOULD beat any high school team (public or private) from Minnesota.

Either way, it should be a real test for the teams they're playing here.

Think about how and where SSM gets their players, Delbarton does the same. They should be a very good team. On the other hand, they have to travel, and play 2 really tough games, maybe 3.

remember new jersey is a small state geographically but much larger than Minnesota in population 8+ mil versus 5+. and Delbarton is right in the middle of the densest part of the state.

Minnesota has 53,430 hockey players registered. Pennsylvania and New Jersey Combined have 6,130. Don't be naive as to the high school model here in Minnesota falling behind.

That means nothing..... Its prep ratings.. They have an entirely separate rating system for public schools

Please recall Sta beat the Breck mustangs 6-1 their championship season.

SSM beat Delbarton today 8-2, and yes it was SSM prep that played them. Delbarton has some solid players, however Tom Ward's teams are always deep, disciplined and relentlessly compete for every puck. They just kept the pressure on them, and finished their checks.

No doubt ssm was taking this. I'm glad they put a beating on them too. Hope sta at least hangs in there within 1-2 to seal the deal on the true state of hockey

Agree completely....I like STA's chances to take care of business. Should be interesting.

Kudos to SSM for romping over Delbarton. However, the games against STA and Breck should be more comparable. According to Wikipedia, the Delbarton School draws from eight New Jersey counties and 60 towns and has an enrollment of 542 young men from grades 7 to 12 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delbarton_School). This compares to a seven-county metropolitan area for the Twin Cities and enrollments of 669 young men at STA (grades 7 to 12) and 1,189 co-eds at Breck (grades pre-K to 12, with 301 in Upper School (grades 9-12)).

You really want your tax dollars funding a trip like that? I have little doubt it would be great, but there's good reason all of this is between private schools.

Little confused about some of the dates people are giving. I don't know the ages/players/etc but Breck was really good, well good enough to win the title with the best team not at state, the last two years coming away with 5 losses in those two years; x2 to STA, x1 to SSM, x1 to Mahtomedi and x1 to Wayzata. St Thomas beat Breck 7-2 and 4-3 in those years. Breck lost to Shattuck last year 1-4.

Delbarton, though, played Breck THREE years ago in a year they didn't go to state. They lost to Delbarton that year 2-5 and beat St Thomas 6-5 that year.

All this is really hard to compare. Delbarton beat Breck 5-2 when Breck beat St Thomas 6-5 and the Cadets won state. When Breck was "best" they lost to St Thomas and Shattuck. Now both MSHSL teams are down and they play again.

Will prob be good hockey but I suspect Breck will lose, Shattuck will win all their games and the game tonight will be competitive.
