Updated 01/02:

Biggest KRACH surprises (IMO) compared to 3-4 years ago:

Positive: BOTH Lakeville schools ARE in the Top 10
Negative: Holy Angels is NOT in the Top 100

I was interested to see so many east metro AA (primarily public school) teams ranked so low and located so close to one another (StP Blades, NSP, Tartan, East Ridge, Woodbury - even Mpls Novas, private CDH, and WSP-Sibley aren't that far away geographically and appear to be rebuilding as well). Not sure why this is - if better players in the east metro are headed to privates, or if the rest of AA has improved the last few years and these east metro AA public school teams haven't kept up. Look at the number of East Metro teams in the bottom 20 of the AA KRACH rankings for evidence of this.

Obviously teams like Roseville, Stillwater and WBL are exceptions to the East Metro issue.

Additionally, the East Metro Woodbury/East Ridge/Park of CG thing will take some time to work itself out as did the Lakeville split. Many forget that Lakeville South started as class A team and was built up over time. Obviously Lakeville North has rebounded as well after the split - the only thing I'm not certain of is if the Woodbury/Park of CG areas have similar growth potential to that of what Lakeville North had when they went through this pains associated with the "split."

Another East Metro observation is the strength of the Classic Suburban - a primarily East Metro conference - has changed. Private power Hill-Murray is as strong as ever and has evolved as the perennial favorite after years of playing behind NSP & SSP. SSP has regained a top-25 team in state (overall) status (but still not the dominant team from the early-to-mid 2000s). The rest of the conference is down rankings-wise relative to a few years back. Obviously graduating players like May from Mahtomedi, Hogan & Thunstrom from NSP, and some talented players from Richfield, Sibley, and Simley has an impact. This is a smaller-school conference as well - even though it's about an even split of A & AA teams.

Hate to bring it up, but girls' youth numbers in St. Paul and the east/north suburbs have not only leveled off but seem to be dropping. WBL couldn't field a U14 team this year. Roseville had to throw on together at the last minute with NSP and Tartan. SSP hasn't fielded a girls' team in years without co-oping with IGH. Ironically, the strongest programs are CG and Woodbury, the ones getting sliced and diced at the HS level.
The balance of power will slowly shift from East to South.....

But not yet. The Suburban East is as strong as ever, maybe the deepest it's ever been. Evidence: Hastings and Park, firmly stuck in 5th and 6th place in the SEC, recently wreaked havoc with 3 of the top 4 teams from the Suburban South at the Farmington tournament. Park thumped Eastview good and lost to LN 1-0. Hastings beat Rosemount and LN. Meanwhile, LS, the 4th of the South's top teams, lost to HM at the ABRA. The computers were infatuated with the Lakeville teams but they hadn't really played any top-15 type teams until last week.

Good point on the SEC. Roseville, Stillwater, and WBL are strong as always and then you add in the Hastings and Park teams... It seems to me that the youth program investment in Park & Hastings is paying off (they've long been doing the right things @ the youth level I hear) and I'd argue that these areas are less likely to lose to the privates than say the closer Mpls/StP, Sibley, NSP, Tartan, Woodbury, and even East Ridge schools.

I'm wondering if we're actually seeing less movement to privates or open enrollment now that the latest set of transfer rules have been in place for a few years... Or is it just not as obvious as it happens in 9th grade? Plus, not sure if economics are playing a role in fewer student-athletes considering privates and T-Breds when compared to 3-5 years ago when we didn't have the tighter transfer rules and the privates/T-Breds were more affordable for some.

Hmmmm...they're transferring alright....it's just alot of them ended up in the same place...BSM!!!!!

I'm pretty sure the movement is before 9th grade now. Hockey parents are savvy, they know the options, and because of select/AAA teams they all know each other by the time the kids are in U12.
One thing I learned recently is that it's way better to have a program that attracts kids than one that recruits kids. Recruits as young as 7th grade can hold a coach hostage--like the 8th grader's parents who make it known that unless the kid makes varsity she is headed back to her home school.
