I walked through rink #5 this weekend at SuperRink while a tryout was going on just in time to see a kid come across the blue line and fire a pretty good looking slapshot from the top of the circle to beat the goalie. Turns out it was a 2002-2003 tryout.

I haven't seen that very often (or ever in fact) at that age and am wondering if anyone knows whether or not a slapshot is allowed at that level in summer hockey? Does MH have anything to say on the subject for youth hockey? I couldn't find anything.

MN Hockey has pretty much NOTHING to say about Summer Hockey (just for kicks, ask them once), for obvious reasons to me... But the trend I've seen most of the Summer is that Slap-shots, Tag-up, and Contact are almost always allowed at MANY of the levels you would not expect it... Other than the inconsistencies in Officiating these rules, it seems to be very well accepted, and certainly makes for some good games. This past weekend we played in a 1999 tourney with primarilly 2000's and slap-shots were allowed. I think I can remember about 3 all weekend. Too tight of games for the extra time needed to wind up. Quick snapshot, or wrister get's it done nicely in most cases.

Sorry, I didn't ask that second part very well. I was wondering if MH has a rule regarding kids at the younger levels using a slap shot in association games.

Yes, squirts and levels below can't raise their sticks above their waists and therefore can't use a slapshot.

The rule is in the USA Hockey rule book under the section dealing the High Sticks.

Have a look at the link below. Officials get these when they are revised which is every three years. Coaches and parents don’t unless they buy their own….

Was the puck blue or was it traveling so fast you couldn't distinguish the color?

Blue pucks are a joke!! Not fair to the young goalies...
