Elite teams from MN- They did pretty well in Winnipeg

I see lots of people saying that we are not producing top end talent. Teams from MN did pretty well against some of the top teams in North America at the Subway classic. 97 Blades 5-1 over all and lost in the Championship 97 Machine 3-3 overall---98 Machine Champs and Blades B side champs 99s Machine third place and Blades 4th place. Both teams 3 and 0 in pool play...Sounds to me like we are doing alright... comments?

Looks like the Blades and Machine both lost big in the semi-finals at the 99 level. Was anyone at the games to see why?

How about 00 and 01 levels in Winnipeg? Did they compete?

01 blades and machine were both 2 and 3. Good experience for the young kids. In watching the games there was a lot of physical play that they were not used to but skill wise they were right with the top teams.

99s The bauer select Black team walked through the entire tourney without a close game. Didn't see them play but I imagine that they were dominant winning games only allowing 6 goals all tourney. tough tourney for the Monopoly team... and torspo only winning one game in the entire tourney between the two of them. and that was the toilet bowl d side playoff game.

Nothing against those organizations as they have the guts to go to a tourney and play the big dogs ( I am sure that they tried to pick up some out of town kids) but it goes to show that AAA in MN is basically two teams.

00 Machine did extremely well. Lost to the Vancouver Vipers Brick team 2-1 in the finals. Machine had beaten the Vipers 4-1 in pool play. Machine also beat the Saskatchewan Brick team 2-1 in the semifinals. Will be interesting to see how the Brick teams the Machine beat this weekend, do in the Brick in a few weeks.

On a side note, the Orange hammered the Monopoly North America team 9-2 in the quarterfinals.

My understanding is that those were throw together teams for the tournament. There were only a couple of "Monopoly" players that went. The 99' team was suppose to be in the 2nd category but they needed to move a team up to fill the top category. I was told the Monopoly 99' team is a lot stronger than the group they had up there. I'm sure they had a lot of fun playing top teams from North America.

Aren't the monopoly teams always throw together teams? I thought that the talk on the other subjects on this board is always about how they pick up players even in the local tourneys? Are they modeling themselves after the other teams in this tourney or are they about developing a core group of kids? I understand that it takes top talent to compete at this type of tourney and don't blame them for picking kids up but a lot of the talk on this board is about how to look out for them... Kinda confusing...

On a side note the comment from the 00 Machine parent about hammering the monopoly....in pool play? get a life...That is the reason there are orange haters on this board.

Their local teams at the 01' 00' 99'(competitive edge) and 98'(flyers) are all local players that they do development for. They are their "real" teams that play together. They have coached some players from out of state that come for an occasional tournament.

The 9-2 rout was in the quarterifinals, after pool play had commenced.

And I think if you ask people, a 9-2 score is a hammering. See what happens, simply state a fact and right away the Mn Made vitriol comes out.

No, it's just a reaction to parents like you who (for some wierd reason) like to use the terms "hammering" or "drubbing" when referring to a game played between 10 year olds who aren't even old enough to check.

Do you say the same thing when referring to coach-pitch baseball? Or 4th grade flag football?

You mean like sending your biggest player out to the face off circle simply to run over the other guy when your team is down by seven goals with a few minutes to play?

You're right, REAL classy. . .hard to defend.

really? You want to go there? Last I checked your team had 2 or 3 guys in the box when the game ended monopoly had zero.

If we are going down this path let's get the facts out. With just under a minute a monopoly player was injured. While skating by your teams bench the head coach starts trash talking him(a 10 year old). Then in the hand shake he continues talking sh... To 10 year olds. The goalie who didn't have his best game and was upset was greeted by your coach with the statement" looks Like they should have played the other goalie today haha." then he goes at the monopoly coach asking how he liked the whipping and enjoy getting your f'ing a-- kicked at the brick."

I don't know Bernie but I would imagine there will be some discipline for this coach! I certainly wouldn't ever let someone like that represent my orginization ever! I think that guy needs a full psychiatric evaluation. Ive been around the game for a long time and I've never seen such a classless display as to trying to go at 10 year olds.

I guess while in Canada, play the game like the Canadians............

There is more trash talking in one game vs a Canadian team than you will get in an entire season here in MN.........unless you consider what goes on here

Hey guys, newbie here...don't shoot me for my thoughts. I have been a long time reader (well a year) and thought it was time to register.
In these tournaments your ultimate goal as a coach is to make your team as successful as possible in the tournament with in reason. Most tournaments implement a tie breaker between 2 teams to be goals against or goals for and against differential with maximum of 7 either way.
The way I have been taught is that the best defence is a great offence. If we are in an easier game, I don't want my kids getting lazy or point greedy. I want them to continue to go hard and move the puck around however usually the losing team is laying back/giving up so the goals come a little easier. What are we supposed to tell our kids, don't score? No, I want my kids to continue to work hard, preparing for the next game. Is it my teams fault that the other team isn't in the right division? NO! When we get up, I will manage my bench differently and give the players that are more likely to see less action in pk situations etc more ice time. However, like I said, the other team is already rolling over and giving up and the goals continue to come. Just my two cents and yes I am a coach of a AAA team that has been involved in lopsided games!

I agree with pretty much everything you said...I've been around the game for quite some time and I understand how pool play tournament rules require teams to score as many goals as possible to help out in tie breaker situations...my point is, don't gloat about beating a group of 10 year old kids by a wide margin. Take the win, be respectful of your opponent and move on. Don't use words like "hammered" when referring to the losing team. I'm not trying at all to be "touchy feely"....but we ARE talking about 10 year olds, people need to keep that in perspective....

I totally agree! There is no pride in beating a team like that, and I want my kids to be very respectful of their opponents win or lose no matter the score.

I prefer the tournaments that use the least goals scored against instead of goal differential. This eliminates the need to run up scores. I also like the next tie breaker to be least penalty minutes against. Reward clean hockey while keeping all the kids on the ice.

Truth is whatever tourney the Monopoly program is in you don't know who's going to be on those rosters. Just look at the rosters from each tourney and they constantly have many rent a players with different colored breezers, helmets, stickers from their 'main' team on the helmet. At least that's the case for the '00's and '99's.

They can't compete with their normal roster and always have room to add since their core team is 10 players or so. On their '00 team they only have 4-5 players that are invite caliber talent. They have 2-3 quality forwards (when the red helmet kid plays) and 2 top defensemen and that's it. The rest is a mix and match of players and players in over their heads. That's the truth and everybody knows it and it's a running joke each tourney they get in.

In Winnipeg they got worked and it was a whole new roster with none or few of their good players. Why they entered this quality of a tournament is beyond me.

Their '99 team's performance was downright embarassing. Got crushed 14-0 and looking at their roster of 10 skaters all which was also on the International Cup that won it shows how weak the '99 invite level was at the international Cup with no Blades or Machine or quality Canada teams.

They want to play with the big boys but simply don't have to horses. Can't compete with 4-5 players who belong and a mix of open level players. It's a team game and you need a strong team and not just 1 line.
