Anyone know where in the metro to find youth open hockey this summer? Last year they had it at the Super Rink for $5 a session in June and July. I was just looking at their calendar and don't see anything listed for this year.

I don't get why it's so hard to find a place for a Squirt aged kid to play open hockey in the summer! I wonder if the AAA frenzy is causing a shortage of ice or something?? What about the people that don't want to commit to 80 hours of ice at $15 an hour? When I was kid this is how we did it in the summer:

-Play baseball
-Play open hockey once or twice a week
-Rollerblade!! Everywhere I went when I was a kid was on rollerblades. I wish I had an odometer to see how many miles I put in over the summer. Me and my friends carried backpacks with our shoes in them at all times. Now rollerblades are like antiques.
-An occasional summer camp and a pre tryout skills clinic.

I'm trying to prove to my kid that if you stay in shape and skate occasionally in the summer you don't need to put in 80 hrs a summer (when you're 10) to keep up. It's hard when you can't even find a place to skate (without having to dodge figure skaters and elderly people).

Maple Grove offers dead ice that can be used as development hockey ice.

I've actually thought about trying to get some kids together and buying a few hours of dead ice. Hell maybe by next year I can have my own AAA start up. I can promise minimal effort and very little instruction but a least I won't yell at your kids. Any takers?

I agree with you but we are a very small minority. We signed up for the warrior 3x3 months ago so the kids could skate and have fun. I have heard it's very fun, a great workout and affordable. My kids can't wait for it to start (this Sunday).

We are at the Superrink every Wednesday Morning at 5:30 am and playing with a bunch of hs boys and girls and older players, have been doing this for a couple of years now.

PWD 10, we have ice in Minnesota.

Schwans Super Rink in Blaine now has ~$5 youth pickup hockey for Squirts,
Peewee and Bantams levels weekly.

Payment and registration is used on HockeyFinder.com , each skate is 5
credits which is about $5-7 depending on how purchased.

Can we just show up pay the five dollars and play on whatever rink we want to or with whatever group is out there?

I checked out Hockey finder and don't see a single kid signed up for any of the rinks or age groups.

I have a ton of stuff I want the kid to work on and even if we don't play hockey the ice time would be hugely beneficial. In fact I would prefer he just work on stick handling and some other stuff then even play hockey if that is possible to believe.

Stick handling in the garage/basement with a golf ball does wonders. 10 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week. I know that USA hockey has tons of videos of off-ice drills on their website.

The Schwans Ice was just booked/planned last week by Schwans. We are doing our best to try and help get the word out. Its suppose to be unstructured and fun for the kids. Just a friendly game of hockey.

For the first week hockeyfinder will be there to help people log in and pay online. After that the ice will only be available to those that have pre signed up.

Rinks like this for a lot of reasons, primarily because they dont have to have someone handling cash. A rink attendant does a head count of who is registered v. how many signed up. If the numbers dont match they do a roll call. Alternatively some skate times will have a captain that will handle the same function.

in the end the rink is trying to make available affordable ice times for kids.
