This is just embarassing...There is no excuse for that kind of hockey. Honestly, I would be ashamed to be apart of that team (Virginia), yes you may be a great hockey team, but there is no excuse for beating a team 22-0.

At what point, wouldn't you think - "Hey, I may need to call off the dogs?" There is a big difference between 13-0 and 22-0. Its just not necessary.

I think there should be a 10 goal mercy rule past the second period. So if a team is up by 10 going into the third or gos up by 10 in the third the game is called. Once you get beyond that it's just a waste of everyone's time to keep playing.

It is just wrong. It is even worse on the girls side. 9-0 used to be the point where all classy coaches stopped. It was an unstated rule and the coach would advise the kids to play keep away. I know people will say that is more disrespectful but it is NOT. It is called good sportsmanship. Parents and players are just interested in running up their personal stats. Unfortunately, this comes from both parents and coaches. I know of a player that needed to be benched because they wouldn't stop shooting and scoring after tallying 5 goals plus assists in a 20-0 win. Can you imagine?

In the 7A Quarterfinals, 2-25-10 thread there's another side to this story. I'm not going to take sides, but I will say that it could have been worse. Moorhead beat Monticello in the 8AA quarterfinals 27-0 in 2004.

I think Silver Bay better take a look at their program? Not saying scoring 22 goals is right, but these type of games are going to happen when you have 1vs8. It happens in both A and AA.

I disagree. The kids, on both teams deserve to play; they suited up, let them play. In my opinion, the AD should fire a coach on the spot and tell the JV coach to work on situations.

Sure, if they are playing Marshall tomorrow and something happens that they can score more than 10 goals, don't hold back. But against a bad team, that's pathetic. If Tonka can hold back and only beat Mpls West 9-0, I think Virginia can hold back.

Going into a game like this, without the help of a miracle, everyone in the building knows who's going to win. Well, let your varsity run plays and work on situations and set ups they (sorry, don't know the hockey terminology) that they may need later. Additionally, as a courtesy to the other team, doing this will help them work on getting better.

This may not be true in MN hockey, but in my experience coaches are friendly and understand how good their team is, for the most part. How can you run a score up like this and go shake the other coach's hand at the end of the game?

What is a coach supposed to do? Its tournament time. Do you tell your boys “forget how hard you practiced this week…go out and play horribly?” Present your team in blindfolds and left handed sticks? Tell them not to skate? Then they’d come across “cocky and arrogant” It’s a tough situation for a coach to be in. I heard in that Moorhead game, the first line sat and they had to pass the puck x number of times before shooting on goal… probably were told to shut their eyes too (sounds cocky, right?) So what do you do? It should be taken out of the coaches hands and game called after 10 goals or maybe the game shouldn’t even be played. It’s not fair to either team, especially the team that‘s on a winning streak, playing hard and wanting State…you can’t just turn it off for one game because the next one could be your last.

Five passes in the o zone before you shoot. If you shoot before 5 passes you sit a shift.

The funny thing is sometimes the 5 passes helps the team to preform even better. If not, it's good practice to work on puck movement.

The losing team can can ice the puck and take their time making line changes, the refs are not going to get on them for running hte clock down.

Working on situations leads to shots which leads to scores.
Not shooting at this stage of the year is not a good thing.

Get off their backs, teams win by lopsided scores in every sport every year. If the losing coach has a problem with it, he can deal with the other coach/school.

most teams don't loose by 22 goals every year. They start passing the puck more and start working some plays.

Absolutely no need to do this...

if you were at this game then you would know the 3rd and fourth line played the majority of the game virginia scored 3 short handed goals all the jv players played many minutes. this was the most one sided game i have every seen every thing went in what do you want the coach to do? tell his jvers not to score?this game wasnt good for either team!

I understand that it is playoff time, but there are other parts of the game you can work on in situations like this. Cycling the puck, dump and chase, heck you could even work on powerplay set up even when it is 5 on 5. Point is, shooting the puck should be limited after 10 goals. Look at some of the other games from last night. Minnetonka beat Minneapolis West 9-0. West had 1 shot on goal. I bet Minnetonka could have easily put up 25 goals, but they chose to work on systems and puck movement instead of putting the puck in the net.

I believe that the Monticello program is getting better.

Some programs just don't have the kids to put up a good team, they still deserve respect though. Its called sportsmanship and class.

Listen I am sure Virginia had a plan to score 22 goals. Maybe Silver Bay should have forfeited, isn't that a 5 goal loss?

Why should a coach change his teams play for the lack of skill on the other side?

I see Jefferson beat Prior Lake 11-0 that might as well be 22 rip they are both big schools...so shame on Jefferson for making the Prior Lake kids feel bad. Shame on Wayzata for the 14 you put on Mpls E or W doesnt matter.

In the Wayzata- Minn East 14-0 game last night the 2 JV players that were suited up and the 3rd lines played the last 15 minutes. This included the 2 3rd line D that played the last 15 minutes without a break. The Minn East and Wayzata players, coaches and parents handled the whole game well. Maybe after 10 goal difference it would be good to go running time at anytime of the game.

Yea, just get better. Maybe Virginia should have won by 30, then maybe the underclassmen would have quit. Just weed out the struggling programs instead, they don't deserve to play anyway. (sarcasm)

Well maybe they should quit then. Are you kidding so there is difference between 22 and 30? And please math guy tell me 8.

Struggling programs...there are more of them than successful ones if we are basing success solely on State tournaments and Championships.

1 versus 8 is almost always going to be a less than intriguing game. That by the way the better team probably doesn't want to play more than the "struggling" team.
